About Camp Courageous Camp Courageous is a year-round respite care and recreational facility for individuals of all ages with disabilities. The camp was established in 1972 with the first 211 campers attending in the summer of 1974. Today, Camp Courageous serves over 7,000 individuals with disabilities annually. All people, regardless of ability level, have the right to opportunities found in the world around them. Individuals with disabilities, as well as their families, should experience year-round recreational and respite care activities in a camp setting. Camp Courageous provides this needed service to all. The camp provides opportunities for social and personal growth within a supportive environment. Campers learn to try a variety of creative and challenging activities and experience success. Campers develop enhanced self-esteem which carries over to work, home, or school environments. Camp Courageous was built and continues to operate on donations, without government assistance, without formal sponsorship, and without paid fund-raisers. By renting camp facilities and equipment, you are directly helping Camp Courageous provide the best possible services to the thousands of individuals that attend camp throughout the year. With 300 acres of land and 25 buildings, camp offers many rental opportunities and activities that you will learn more about as you read through this brochure.
Durgin Pavilion The Durgin Pavilion is camp s newest addition, surrounded by pine trees and located on beautiful Lake Todd. With 15, 312 sq feet of both indoor and outdoor event space, this facility is perfect for hosting weddings, birthday parties, family reunions, or even business meetings. The upper level holds approximately 250 people seated at 10 tables. Features of this level includes a stone fireplace, large kitchen, A.V. equipment, bathrooms, and wooden beam ceilings. A large wrap around balcony provides lovely views of the lake and surrounding area. The basement of the pavilion features a two-lane bowling alley. Other amenities: showers, bathrooms, kitchen, and arcade.
Main Lodge With the capability to host up to 500 guests, the lodge is a 100 x 70 facility that includes a fireplace at the East end, bathrooms with multiple stalls, and audio/video equipment. The lodge has the largest seating capacity at Camp Courageous. Ideal for larger groups, wedding receptions, meetings, reunions, anniversary parties, and more.
Sill Barn The Sill Barn, a building with an 1800 s style, is a facility with multifaceted opportunities with two components: the upstairs (used for weddings, family reunions, and other activities) and the downstairs (featuring various farm animals).
Board Room/Meeting & Meals The Boardroom is a rental opportunity that provides a private setting for Corporate and Organization meetings with a breakfast or lunch meal. Seating will be for five to twenty attendees. FEATURES: Sound/Video System - Built-in speakers in the ceiling for listening to DVDs, webcasts, or other audio presentations. Amplifier available for listening to standard audio sources. DVD player available. Projector - Video projector for PowerPoint, web casts, or any other need. VGA connector on front wall allows for easy computer connection. Composite video connection available at rear of boardroom. Wall-mounted white screen for best viewing of projected images. Conference Calls -Wireless speakerphone for conference calls. Phone can be placed anywhere in the room.
Indoor Pools The indoor pool at Camp Courageous is a popular activity with campers as well as with swimmers from surrounding communities. Completed in 2000, the facility features a lap pool, therapy pool, locker rooms, and a classroom. The lap pool is 25 meters by six lanes and is kept at about 84 degrees. The depth is from 4 to 9 feet. In the deep end of the pool is a climbing wall. The pool is also equipped with starting blocks so swim meets could be held. This pool is equipped with a lift to get persons who need assistance in and out of the water. There are also steps leading into the shallow end. The therapy pool is 45 x 24 and ranges from 2 to 4 feet. The water is kept at about 88 degrees. This pool has a ramp that allows easy entry into the water. Another feature of this pool is four whirlpool jets with a bench to allow swimmers to sit and relax in the water. This pool also has a basketball hoop at one end.
Cohn Nature Center Camp s nature center is home to many animals including guinea pigs, rabbits, turtles, birds, and even an iguana! Head outside to the lower level of the barn and you will find several farm animals as well. There are tables and chairs for approximately 20 people, perfect for a birthday party or an educational activity for the family.
Cabins There are three main cabins at camp: South, Menster, and Pitlik. All cabins feature both heating and air conditioning, and are able to accommodate 32 people. South and Menster cabins offer open sleeping areas while Pitlik cabin has 2 private rooms available. South cabin also has a fully functional kitchen equipped with a fridge, stove, and microwave. Arts & Crafts Building There are endless possibilities in the arts and crafts center, located next to the parking lot and gym. Complete with several tables and chairs, bathrooms, and an abundance of supplies this building is the ideal location for a birthday or just a day of creativity!
Program & Educational Services Instruction provided by qualified camp staff person: $50.00/ hr/group. A group is defined as 12 or less individuals. This may include ropes course, caving, archery, nature activities, crafts, orienteering, cross-country skiing, bowling, etc. Instruction for horseback riding, bowling alley, or high adventure activities like the burma, angle dangle, tree climb, rock climbing and rappelling, etc. Gym The gym offers groups opportunities for basketball, volleyball, meeting space and more.
Other Equipment Additional equipment is also available when not being used by campers, whether its for a family event, birthday party, or a fun weekend in the outdoors. Check out some of the hiking trails around camp and Pictures Rocks State Park... there is plenty to explore! Caving equipment (helmets and knee pads), cross-country: skis, snow shoes, chairs, tables, and Funwagon. Check the rental rates document for all items and details.
