Located at Raymond Plaza, between Market Street and Raymond Boulevard, Newark Penn Station is served by the Newark Light Rail, New Jersey Transit commuter rail, Amtrak long distance trains, the PATH rapid transit system, and local, regional and national bus services (NJ Transit, Greyhound, and other private operators). Designed by the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead and White, the station is a mixture of Art Deco and Neo-Classical. The interior of the main waiting room has medallions illustrating the history of transportation, from wagons to steamships to cars and airplanes, the eventual doom of the railroad age. The current building was dedicated on March 23, 1935; the first regular train to use it was a New York Philadelphia express at 10:17 on March 24. The new station was built alongside (northwest of) the old station, which was then demolished and replaced by the southeast half of the present station, completed in 1937. Except for the separate, underground Newark Light Rail station, tracks are elevated above street level. Newark Penn Station is still frequented by the intercity Northeast Corridor Amtrak service, but most of its passengers are commuters. The building was built in 1902 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 17, 1978. The building is a five story Beaux Arts style building with a golden dome; built at a cost of $2.6 Million. The interior of the building features carved marble, a grand central staircase, stained-glass skylights, decorative plaster and wrought-iron works. Developer Harry Grant paid to have the dome covered in 24 carat gold in 1986. Newark City Hall was renovated in 2006 at a cost of $18 Million. Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 3 -

Located at 710 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the building dates back to 1905. This fine, four-storey house was built for Christian Feigenspan, owner of one of the largest breweries in USA. The building was constructed in Second Renaissance Revival Style by Warrington Lawrence and is one of a few buildings of this type. Now Feigenspan Mansion is home to the Community Agencies Corporation. The mansion was built in 1888 by Gottfried Krueger (1837 1926), founder of Newark's Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company and owner of several other breweries. The construction cost at the time was $250,000. The mansion was sold to the Valley of Newark Scottish Rite Freemasons in 1926 for $100,000. The mansion was purchased in 1958 by Louise Scott for $85,000. Scott operated a beauty school out of the first floor of the mansion while keeping the upper levels as her private residence. Scott died in 1982 and ownership of the mansion passed to the city of Newark. In 1991, the New Jersey Historic Trust funded a bond for $625,812 to stabilize the exterior of the building. The mansion is a three story brick late Victorian style building with a five story circular tower. A wrap around porch, steeply pitched roof, asymmetrical facade and arched front entryway are characteristic of the Queen Anne Style. The building is a balloon frame structure with a brick facade. The interior consists of lath and plaster walls with wallpaper covering and wood molding. The flooring is made of hardwood set into patterns. Copyright by GPSmyCity.com - Page 4 -

It is located on the west bank of the Passaic River in Newark's Broadway neighborhood, opposite Kearny. It occupies approximately 40 acres (162,000 m²) and is widely used as a park. The cemetery is listed on both the New Jersey Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The graves of some of Newark's most eminent citizens are within Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The cemetery is dominated by the marble mausoleum of John Fairfield Dryden, the founder of Prudential Financial. Other notable interees include Marcus Lawrence Ward, Governor of New Jersey; Seth Boyden, inventor of patent leather; and Mary Stillman, first wife of Thomas Edison. Mount Pleasant also contains graves of members of the Kinney, Ballantine, and Frelinghuysen families. The cemetery itself was opened and incorporated in 1844, but there are graves that date back to the mid-17th century, which were moved from older graveyards that were crowded out due to development.
