PR & MEMBERSHIP FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS DISTRICT CONFERENCE Our District Governor, like all around the world, is required to conduct a District Conference for Rotarians and the Family of Rotary. Each year, our District Conference is held in the home town of the current District Governor and in March 2015 it will be held in Burnie. The Registration Fee covers the conference itself and most meals. Attendance is optional but the experience and guest speakers are always inspiring to everyone particularly if you are in business. It is a great networking tool and an exceptional way to learn about Rotary projects. At our club we encourage all new members, in particular, to attend. The 2016 conference will be in Deloraine. OTHER SOCIAL ACTIVITIES There are club social activities which we encourage all members and their partners and families to join in if they can. These may include restaurant functions, BBQs, golf days and car rallies. It varies from club to club and person to person as to what level of involvement is made. We endeavour to keep costs to a minimum so all can enjoy the events. DISTRICT FUNCTIONS District 9830 (Tasmania) has a number of functions during the year to which members of our Rotary Clubs are invited to attend. These may include District Governors Changeover Function, District Training Assembly, President Elect Training days, family fun days and Celebration of International Service, and so on. Some of these are free, others will incur costs depending on what is involved. All are optional to attend for members. However, the experiences are always worthwhile. MICHAEL S MEMO Thanks to Chris Riley and helpers for the working bee at Wildwood a good way to kick off the Rotary year! Maintaining this asset is a big task and we need to continue the conversation within the Club about how best to manage Wildwood into the future. At our first dinner meeting last Tuesday, there was good debate and discussion about planning for the Rotary Pavilion and about our club s financial reserves. As members of a service club and a nonprofit organisation, I think we need to have this discussion on a regular basis. We also heard from two of the instructors about the successful Learn-to-Swim program at the Deloraine Pool this summer. Thank you to the Youth Service Committee for organising this activity. Our Club regularly awards Paul Harris Fellowships to recognise outstanding contributions to the community. The board received a nomination in October last year and a small committee of Paul Harris Fellows assessed the application and then recommended acceptance to the board. The wheels are in motion and we hope to make the presentation at the end of March. We have recently received another nomination and we will work through the assessment process in the coming weeks. The tradition is that the nomination is kept confidential until the day of the award. Information on Geoff Woods progress Geoff's heart operation on 5 th January was successful and he came through that well, but unfortunately immediately after it he suffered a stroke which has affected the right side of his body. He has been moved from the RHH and is in the stroke unit at the LGH. Already some progress has been made but it is going to be a long process to recovery and there is no way of knowing outcomes at this stage. PP Pat Woods

SUBS Are you paying your subs by instalments?? If so, a reminder that your next instalment of $85 is now payable. This can be paid to Treasurer Bev, or you can make a bank transfer (please remember to include your name as a reference) TCF The next TCF Meeting will be held on Wednesday 21 st January 7.00p.m. at Rotary Pavilion Director 2016 & 2017?? The Executive Committee of the TCF will soon be meeting to appoint the next TCF Director for 2016 and 2017. If you are interested in being considered, please apply to TCF Director Maree before the 31 st January, 2015. COMMUNITY SERVICE The Rotary Club of Youngtown in conjunction with the New Horizons club will once again be holding our annual cycle challenge in 2015. We are hoping that some of your club members (6-8 persons per Rotary club) could assist us on the ride day by setting up signs and providing flag marshals at dangerous intersections in your respective areas, as you have done each year since the Cycle challenge started about 10 years ago. The date set for the ride was changed from the last weekend in March to Sunday 22 nd March to avoid a clash with the V8 Super car event at Symons Plains, unfortunately that has clashed with the Rotary District Conference. We are hoping that your members not attending the District Conference could still assist us on the Sunday of the ride. Community Service Director Cindy will be seeking assistance from Rotarians for this event, please let her know if you are able to help. CONFERENCE 2015 Friday 20 th to Sunday 22 nd March You can register now for the 2015 District Conference. To do this online, you will need to go to the District Conference website (www.rotaryburnie.org.au). Speakers... John Basarin John Basarin first visited Gallipoli as a 10-year-old Turkish boy. His father said to John, Son, this is where Turkey was born. John migrated to Australia in 1973 and says now: Little did I know then that on the other side of the world, Australian people felt the same. Dr Basarin gained his PhD as a mature age student at Deakin Uni. on the subject of Anzac Day at Gallipoli. He has become a well-known and popular speaker on this subject and has co-authored six books in both English and Turkish. John was awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize in 2010 by the RSL in recognition of his work in promoting international understanding of the Gallipoli campaign. He regularly leads tours to Turkey and Gallipoli and is project manager of the Gallipoli 2015 Rotary Peace Conference to be held in Istanbul, April 2015. John Basarin trained as a chemical engineer and lived and worked in many countries including Norway, USA, Brazil, Germany and the UK. He knows the value of international travel and friendships. A Past President of Hampton Rotary Club (Victoria) John now encourages young people to embrace travel through the Rotary Youth Exchange and Friends of Gallipoli. Come to the OneCare Rotary District Conference 20-22 March 2015 and meet Dr John Basarin. From DG Ken: There are two significant happenings coming up in the life of Rotary in Tasmania - Rotary Day and District Conference. Firstly, Rotary Day which is in fact a month of events beginning on Rotary's 110 th Birthday on February 23 rd and extending through to 28 th March. District Membership Director Melissa Carlton along with Public Image Director Alan Harris and Web Guru Reg Emmett are well on the way to organising a digital and social media extravaganza titled "What is Rotary" that will be launched on 23 rd February. This is designed to maximise our exposure to the general public over the stated period with the aim of increasing awareness, raising our profile and increasing our membership. You too can do something to help in this right now by asking what your club is doing by way of a Rotary Day event. It's not too late to organise something that is appealing to the general public or alternatively make an existing annual event held during that time even bigger and better. Most importantly let Melissa, Alan, Reg or me know what your club has organised so we can include it on the calendar and give your event exposure to the general public. The 2015 OneCare Rotary Conference is now only two months away (20 th - 22 nd March) and I have to ask - HAVE YOU REGISTERED? This will be an event not to be missed and if you haven't yet visited the conference website please do so now at http:// www.rotaryburnie.org.au/ Have a look at the speaker profiles, view the video clips, scan the program but most importantly register for the conference and don't forget to book your accommodation. The secret to leadership in five letters: S.E.R.V.E. Want an engaging way to connect with your members on what it means to serve in Rotary? In their book, The Secret, Ken Blanchard and Mark Miller use the acronym S.E.R.V.E. to identify key aspects of leadership: S E R V E DISTRICT NEWS See the future. Engage and develop others. Reinvent continuously. Value results and relationships. Embody values -- live fully aligned with stated values. Develop new member training or leadership development training that focuses on each of these points. Source: Thanks to Michel P.
