leisure & lifestyle The return of the kings By Rebecca Jenkins The Australian culture is rife with love of the bush and the life that comes with living on the land. One of the biggest celebrations of this is about to kick off for 2015 in Murrurundi. It s a week s worth of all the things that make bush culture and our country great. I am of course, talking about the King of the Ranges Stockman s Challenge and Bush Festival. Everything from cracking a whip to the talented art produced by the locals will be on display and it never fails to disappoint. The Stockman s Challenge is certainly a site to be seen. The country s finest and most talented stockmen, women and juniors in a range of categories will compete against each other for prizes and titles, in the tradition of the competition s namesake Archie Bung McInnes. Archie was a renowned Stockman from the early 1900s. Preliminary events include packsaddle, stock handling, whipcracking, horseshoeing, bareback obstacle and freestyle and cross country. The finals will showcase the finest in the areas of wild horse catching and stock saddle buck jumping, with a junior obstacle time trial event as well. The Festival will have a little something for everybody young and old with a camp oven dinner and entertainment by singer/songwriter Claire Hayes and hosted by award-winning poet Carol Heuchan, of whom will also be running a Bush Poetry Workshop for all adults wanting to learn how to spin a yarn. Special guests Dan Murphy and his band Murphy s Law will perform at the Saturday Party and the event does NOT stop there. There ll be a Ute Muster, the recognised 5th local Murrurundi Art Prize and masses of stalls with a range of goodies. With a wide range of events to entertain and thrill every member of the family, the KOTR will be held from 30th April - 3rd May. leisure & lifestyle Visitor Information Centres open over Easter Upper Hunter Shire Visitor Information Centres (VICs) of Scone and Merriwa will be open over the Easter holidays, every day except Good Friday, 3 April 2015. Your local VICs have maps and event attractions and accommodation information - not just for the Upper Hunter but the broader region too. You can check out the comprehensive Visitbyroad online tool that helps you plan your next trip locally or across Australia, and identifies alternate routes, events and attractions, plan it all on the big screen and print the details off in the VIC and take them with you. VICs also stock local products including crafts, wines, soaps, olive oils and other condiments as well as Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival merchandise, perfect for last-minute gifts or a reminder of a great weekend away. Handmade soaps from Merriwa are the newest local products on sale at the VICs. The Scone VIC & Horse Centre also includes an exhibition on the local equine industry. Two new friendly faces have joined the Upper Hunter Shire Council, with Ngaire Baker and Shay Hancock recently filling the roles of Tourism and Events Coordinator and Tourism and Events Officer. If you haven t been into one of the Upper Hunter VICs lately you might be surprised at what is on offer, Ms Baker said. VICs are a resource for locals, as well as tourists, and the perfect first stop when hosting visitors from out of town. Accredited Visitor Information Centres across NSW are open for business every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. Due to building repairs the Murrurundi VIC will be closed over Easter this year.
