TM EXPERIENCE WILD BORNEO LAST CHANCE FOR AN EXCLUSIVE LIFE-ENHANCING EXPERIENCE PLUS» 10% OFF NOW» FRIEND FOR LIFE STATUS WITH 10% OFF FOREVER» BE OUR GUEST IN SINGAPORE OR BALI

Dear Traveler, I met Dr. Biruté Galdikas a protégée of legendary paleontologist Louis Leakey, founder of Orangutan Foundation International (OFI), and many-time National Geographic grantee on a hot afternoon last August. It had been quite a trek to get here. But we had been granted the opportunity to visit her rehabilitation center, and were undaunted. I felt deeply moved at meeting her, the third trimate, (Dian Fossey and Jane Goodall, whom I d met previously, are the others.) The idea that a person would dedicate their entire life to understand and protect a single species is remarkable, and the people who have chosen to do that have a rare and unique character. One feels a certain sense of awe in their presence. We woke early the next day, and boarded local boats (klotoks) to head several hours upriver to Dr. Galdikas Camp Leakey. The river ride was wonderful: we spotted proboscis monkeys, gibbons, flocks of hornbills, as well as large solitary kingfishers. Dr. G., followed by a couple of orangutans, met us on the trail. It was quiet when we got to the feeding station, but in fairly short order individuals appeared from the forest to provide a spectacular encounter. On our sunset cruise down river later, we all remarked that nothing could hold a candle to the experience we had been so privileged to have. I am delighted we can extend that privilege to you: the life-altering opportunity to visit the Orangutan Care Center and Quarantine (OCCQ) and engage with its wards orphaned infant and juvenile orangutans in the company of Dr. Galdikas, our Global Perspectives guest speaker. I encourage you wholeheartedly this is a life-list experience to have, if you can. Your heart will be touched by the charisma, and the endangered status of these intelligent animals. Travelers come from around the world to visit Camp Leakey, but only National Geographic Orion guests are invited to the OCCQ. And since Orion will head to new destinations in 2016, this is the year to join us. On behalf of the expedition team, I look forward to welcoming you aboard. All the best, Local craft (klotoks) heading upriver. Sven-Olof Lindblad Ship s registry: Bahamas

Have This Experience: Take Advantage of Our Friend For Life and Be Our Guest Offers Wearing masks for the animals protection, our guests share intimate encounters with infant orangutans during their lively session in the Center s enrichment area. No personal items are allowed into the area, and the top left photo shows why!
