The facility name and logo The facility name is "Umigatari" During the long history of Joetsu Municipal Aquarium, the visitors have talked about the sea and gather the threads of various "stories". The Sea of Japan s Terrace A new superb viewspot in Joetsu City! An open space that the water surface of Umigatari Aquarium and the Sea of Japan come together. You can enjoy the panoramic view of the majestic Sea of Japan and sunset while feeling the waves, wind and sunlight reflecting the surface of the Sea of Japan. Salmon and yellowtail swim together. An attractive aquarium of the Sea of Japan and Joetsu off-shore, "Umigatari Aquarium" a large water tank having 38,000 fishes of 50 species like school of Sardines, Scalloped hammerhead, Asian sheepshead wrasse, and Sunfish. Joetsu off-shore is the sea area where both the salmon which migrates around the cold zone and the yellowtail in the warm zone are seen. These characteristics are expressed in 1 large water tank. It is a unique place to "Umigatari" just like walking in the sea. The sunlight that falls from the third floor changes the expressions depending on the time and season, and every time you visit, you will find a new charm. In the surrounding space "East Hall" and "West Hall" connected by the tube, two different visual entertainments are performed. It conveys the importance of Nature Protection as an internationally valuable facility, such as recreating the habitat of South America. Magellanic Penguin Museum The world's largest keeping number! Experience the herd of Magellanic penguins that Joetsu City presents. The second floor of the "Magellanic Penguin Museum" is an exhibition area which recreates Punta Tombo of the Argentine Republic which is a major habitat of Magellanic penguins. You can observe the penguins closely, as there is no barrier in the walkthrough area. In the area inside the first floor, you can also see penguins swimming underwater like flying.
