This is an annual robotics contest involving teams of post-secondary students competing in a series of predetermined activities with robots designed and built by the students to demonstrate their engineering skills. July 2016 Structural Division: Twenty-two teams from 15 secondary schools participated in the Structural Engineering Competition for the Youth Paper Frame Structure Challenge ( 紙做 易拉架 ), which aimed to inspire young people to become elite engineers by developing their analytical skills and enhancing their engineering knowledge. In the Competition, each team had to build a 1.3-metre tall paper frame structure which was subject to an increasing horizontal force until collapse. The judging criteria included strength, lightness, aesthetics and innovation. September 2016 Civil Division and Environmental Division: The Eighth Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau Sustainable Development Conference was jointly organised by the EV and CV Divisions on 23 September 2016. It was well-received by 300 participants, including 80 from Guangzhou and Macau. The guest of honour was Mr K S Wong, Secretary for the Environment. The Conference was the largest since this regional platform was set up in 2002, which aimed to promote discussion on the opportunities and challenges of sustainable development in the Pearl River Delta Bay Area under the Belt and Road Initiative. The one-day Conference was followed by a technical visit to T-park, Science Park and Ecopark on 24 September 2016. October 2016 Biomedical Division: The 76th China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF) was held from 29 October to 1 November 2016 at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Centre. It was the largest exhibition of 24

The Biomedical Division formed a team of 16 members to visit CMEF. Electrical Division: More than 300 participants attended the Division s annual symposium under the theme of Innovations for Smart City. The opening address was given by the President. Ir Allen Yeung, Government Chief Information Officer and Ms Brenda Au, Head of Energising Kowloon East Office, delivered the keynote speech and closing address respectively. Gas & Energy Division: A 20-member delegation visited Shanghai on 27-30 October 2016. The delegation found the visits to the CHP units at Shanghai Disneyland, smart gas network at Shanghai Fiorentini, and natural gas terminal to be eye-opening. They were impressed by the advanced developments in the energy field of mainland cities. The highlight of the trip was the rare opportunity to see the assembly of China s first commercial jet airliner, the C919. Mechanical, Marine, Naval Architecture & Chemical Division: The Division hosted the Advanced Maritime Engineering Conference 2016 on 13-14 October 2016 in Hong Kong. It was a biennial event organised by the Pan Asian Association of Maritime Engineering Societies, which was founded by 13 members of marine engineering professional bodies and societies in Asia. The Conference was well-attended by 350 participations. Prof Anthony Cheung, Secretary for Transport and Housing, was the guest of honour at the event. November 2016 Building Services Division: The Joint Symposium 2016 - Building a Smart City via Latest Technologies was jointly organised by the Division, CIBSE Hong Kong Branch, and Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This symposium was intended to bring together international and local speakers, to foster advances in building design and building services engineering, to support the development of a smart city in Hong Kong. 25

Fire Division: A four-day technical visit to Xian was arranged on 10-13 November 2016 with the aim of enriching participants understanding of the state of-the-art fire engineering technology in Xian. A total of 25 members participated in the visit. The Division s annual dinner, which was held in the same month, attracted the attendance of 420 participants. Nuclear Division: A total of 40 participants joined a technical visit to Daya Bay neutrino experimental facility in Shenzhen. The visit included a presentation on nuclear energy and viewing of the nuclear power stations at Daya Bay. The focus of the visit was an introduction by Prof K B Luk of the University of California at Berkeley, on the current understanding of neutrinos based on the results of an experiment and a visit to the facility. December 2016 Biomedical Division: The Hong Kong Biomedical Engineering Symposium 2016 was held on 9 December 2016 under the theme of Brain and Neuroengineering. This symposium served as a learning platform for driving the exchange of the latest information on biomedical engineering topics. More than 100 participants from academia, government, hospital and industry attended the Symposium and interacted with speakers to share experience and insights. Manufacturing & Industrial Division: A two-day workshop on 3D printing technology was organised by the Division with the support of the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering of The University of Hong Kong. A total of 35 engineers attended the workshop, which aimed to teach them how to build their own 3D printers and appreciate different peripheral technologies related to 3D printing. January 2017 Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division: The Division co-organised the Paper Award Competition with the Institute of Measurement and Control, Hong Kong Section. The aims of the Competition were to promote control, automation and instrumentation technologies and encourage young/potential engineers and technologists to take part in it. Materials Division: On 7 January 2017, 25 members joined the technical visit to a hot dip galvanising plant in Dongguan organised by the Division. Mechanical, Marine, Naval Architecture & Chemical Division: Fifteen members of the Division participated in a visit to an elderly home before the Chinese New Year to greet the residents and pass out good wish bags. Nuclear Division: A group of 16 participants visited the Department of Radiology and Infectious Disease Centre at Princess Margaret Hospital on 7 January 2017. The visit helped disseminate knowledge of nuclear applications in medicine in Hong Kong among HKIE members and establish a channel to promote the image of HKIE among other nuclear professionals in Hong Kong. Young Members Committee: The YMC arranged a delegation of 26 members to visit Xian on 5-10 January 2017 to gain a better understanding of the city s state-of-the-art technologies and to experience its long history. Xian is the starting point of the Silk Road and the capital of 13 dynasties. It has huge historical and cultural resources important to Chinese civilisation. In the same month, the YMC also organised a two-day-one-night leadership training camp on Lead Your Future, to provide engineering students and young members with a platform to exchange experiences and gain insights from leaders in the industry. February 2017 Aircraft Division: In collaboration with Cranfield University, the Division introduced the first-ever Hong Kong Airworthiness Course, which was based on the University s MSc level module. This kind of international collaboration is essential to maintain a high standard of professional competence. The Course attracted a total of 30 participants. Building Division: A group of 30 engineers joined the Division s Taiwan delegation on 23-26 February 2017 and visited two major cities, Kaohsiung and Taipei. The visit provided an opportunity for Hong Kong engineers to meet with the academics at The National Taiwan University as well as representatives of engineering organisations such as the Kaohsiung Professional Civil Engineers Association. The delegation gained more understanding of building developments and the prevalent design and construction practices for building works in Taiwan. Civil Division: On 23-26 February 2017, the Division organised an overseas delegation to Malaysia, one of the Belt and Road countries. The 20-member delegation visited some infrastructure projects in Kuala Lumpur, including the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project, the River of Life project along the Klang River and the Malaysian Land Public Transportation Commission, and made a presentation to members of the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia. Environmental Division: The Division arranged a technical visit to facilities around the Pearl River Delta on 25-26 February 2017, which included Guangzhou Metro Design and Research Institute Co Ltd; Guangdong Provincial Academy of Building Research Institute s Administration Building, which has won Green Building Awards; Guangzhou Meteorological Satellite Ground Station, Foshan City Nanhai Waste Treatment Environmental Industrial Park, and Huizhou City Huiyang District Yaweinong Ecopark. The delegation consisted of 27 members. The hosts were welcoming and enthusiastic about their visit. 26

Gas & Energy Division: A group of 30 participants joined a technical visit to Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital s combined heat and power system. They were impressed by Hong Kong s first successful utilisation of biogas from a landfill to run the system. Structural Division: The annual seminar of the Division on Green Structures and Construction was held on 23 February 2017, attracting the attendance of 265 participants. Distinguished overseas and local speakers from academia to prominent practising professionals shared their insights, experience and innovative ideas in both research and the application of green structural engineering, and provided inspirational examples to enhance sustainability in building design and construction. Mr K S Wong, Secretary for the Environment, was the guest of honour on the occasion. March 2017 Biomedical Division: The Workshop on Medical Device Regulation and Regulatory Harmonisation was held on 3 March 2017. It aimed to provide a platform for biomedical engineers, practitioners and regulatory affairs specialists in the healthcare industry to keep abreast of the latest developments in medical device regulations in Asia. The workshop attracted a wide-spectrum audience ranging from university students to experienced engineers and medical professionals. Building Division: The 16th Building Division annual seminar entitled Functional Methodology for Sustainable Building Development was held on 8 March 2017. Aiming at promoting sustainable engineering practices, construction technologies and project management, the seminar offered a constructive platform for professionals and industry practitioners to exchange vision, experience, knowledge and functional methodologies that facilitate sustainable building development. Guests of honour and speakers included Ir C K Hon, the President, Mr Victor So, Mr M C Chung, Ir Zen Chua, Ar Ada Fung, Ms Christine Lam, Mr David Clayton, Ir Prof K F Chung, Ir Eric Lau and Ir Vincent Yuen. The seminar attracted keen participation by 320 participants. Civil Division: A technical seminar on One Designated Point of One Belt One Road - Sri Lanka was held on 8 March 2017. The speakers, Ir Chris Lau and Mr Ivan Tse, shared with around 80 participants the Belt and Road Initiative s strategy, followed by an introduction to the status of infrastructure construction projects in Sri Lanka, including those involving Chinese enterprises. They also shared their experience of working as engineers in Sri Lanka. Control, Automation & Instrumentation Division: With the strong support of CAD friends, the Division held its annual symposium at the CKK Auditorium, Hong Kong Science Park on 17 March 2017. The symposium included technical presentations on state-of-the-art automation and control systems from specialist companies in the field as well as a luncheon speech by Shanghai Electric on Belt and Road projects. The event was well-received by more than 200 participants, which gave the local control and automation engineers some insights into opportunities to engage themselves in Belt and Road projects. Young Members Committee: Since 1991, the YMC has been organising delegations to various parts of the world. During this Session, 16 members of the YMC visited Iceland on 28-25 March 2017 to review climate change issue and find out the key role of engineers in the global fight against it. April 2017 Aircraft Division: A group of 60 participants attended the Boeing Maintenance Error Decision Aid (MEDA) Investigator Workshops organised in April 2017, which aimed to equip participants with investigation skills for managing maintenance events investigation in practice. The speaker of the workshops was Maggie J Ma of The Boeing Company. The Division also held its AGM and lecture dinner in the same month, which provided a networking opportunity for members to share industry insight. Members also learned the A350 aircraft story from Mr Bruno Bousquet, Vice President Customer Service, Airbus China. Building Services Division: The one-day seminar on Smart Building Solutions was held on 7 April 2017 to provide participants with updates on the latest developments in smart building solutions for the building services industry. The seminar focused on experience sharing in both BIM and sustainability applications as well as lift engineering applications and developments, and was well-attended by some 200 participants. The keynote speech was delivered by Prof Usmani Asif, Department Head of the Department of Building Services Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Environmental Division: The annual forum of the Division, on Paradigm Shift: Emergence of Environmental Management and Engineering in the Development of Hong Kong into a World City, was held on 27 April 2017. This forum aimed to provide a platform for professionals and academics in the environmental management and engineering industry to gain insights into the latest practices and technological developments required for the development of a world-class city, and to share local and overseas experiences and stimulate initiatives that could further reinforce Hong Kong s status as a world city. Keynote speakers included Mr K S WONG, Secretary for the Environment; Ir Dr the Hon W K Lo and Mr Dalson Chung of the National Environment Agency, Singapore. The Forum was well-attended by 300 delegates. 27

Fire Division: The annual symposium entitled From Vision to Practice was presented by Mr K Y Li, Director of Fire Services. The topics of the symposium covered dust explosion, the third runway project, rock caverns, heritage conservation, tunnel ventilation, smoke control for railway infrastructure, fire tests for tunnel linings and the behaviour of structure during a fire. The symposium attracted 142 participants. Geotechnical Division: The Division arranged a technical visit to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur between 9 and 13 April 2017, which aimed to enrich Hong Kong engineers knowledge of international best practice in civil and geotechnical engineering design and construction, especially deep excavations, ground treatment, foundations and innovative approaches that promote sustainability. The delegation comprised 26 HKIE members. During the visit, a joint evening seminar was also held to facilitate interaction between the HKIE delegates and local practitioners, with Ir James Sze and Dr Oskar Sigl of Geotechnical Society of Singapore being the speakers. Information Technology Division: Virtual Reality (VR) has become a reality of everyday life. The Division organised a technical seminar on Power of Virtual Reality in Modern Engineering, attracting the attendance of around 100 participants. The speaker, Ir Dr Henry Lau, introduced the latest developments in VR, especially in CAVE-based systems. The application and future trend were also discussed. Logistics & Transportation Division: The Division organised an essay competition on the topic of Green Transportation Logistics in Horizon 2020. Winners of the competition were presented with their awards at the Division s annual dinner held on 27 April 2017. During the dinner, Ir Dr the Hon W K Lo put up an excellent saxophone performance. In the same month, the Division also held its annual symposium, entitled Hong Kong Logistics and Transportation: marching into 2030+, with six experts sharing their visions and insights on the future development of the logistics and transportation industry. Nuclear Division: The Division s annual dinner cum seminar on Merchant of Doubt - The story behind climate denial was held on 28 April 2017. The speaker, Mr W M Leung, presented a very interesting seminar on climate change. Young engineers of the division also gave a band performance during the dinner. A total of 41 participants attended the event. May 2017 Civil Division: Around 80 participants attended the seminar entitled Strategies for Protecting Your One Belt One Road Investment, which was held on 10 May 2017. The speakers introduced to the audience the risks in investing in different countries under the Belt and Road policy and offered them practical analysis and a useful guide to managing legal risks when making Belt and Road investments. Electrical Division: Around 130 junior secondary school students took part in the Electrical Model Car Design Competition organised by the Division. Each contesting team had to design a small EV model car which was charged from a photovoltaic station. The final score of the design was mainly based on the charge fed into the car and the car s performance. Committee Members of the Division served as judges. In the same month, the Division also organised the Energy Innovations for Smart City Competition for senior secondary school students. Gas & Energy Division: The Division s AGM-cum-technical seminar on New Combined Cycle Power Plant was held on 9 May 2017. Ir Ken Fong was invited as the speaker of the seminar. It was an informative and illuminating talk, catching the interest of members from all backgrounds. Those in the power industry gained insights into the latest developments in their field, while others shared the experience of how the programme could be effectively fast-tracked. The seminar attracted the attendance of some 70 participants. Geotechnical Division: The Division s annual seminar entitled G-EVOLUTION: Geotechnical Practice in Hong Kong was held on 19 May 2017. It was well-attended by 520 participants, including industrial practitioners, academia, clients and government representatives. The seminar presented the geotechnical advances achieved over the last decade and highlighted the challenges and new adventures facing the profession, to cultivate a drive to utilise the valuable geotechnical skills learnt in Hong Kong and export them overseas, particularly to developing countries. The programme included four invited lectures given by Ir H N Wong, Ir Dr Daman Lee, Ir Michael Bezzano and Professor Hui Lin respectively as well as eight selected paper presentations. Logistics & Transportation Division: The fourth AGM technical forum entitled Logistics & Transportation Division was held on 11 May 2017. Mr Raymond Lee, Director of Planning of the HKSAR Government, made a presentation on the development strategy of Hong Kong 2030+, drawn up to promote a vision to strengthen Hong Kong as a liveable, competitive and sustainable Asia s World City. More than 40 participants attended the forum. June 2017 Manufacturing & Industrial Division: The Industry 4.0 Conference: The Opportunities of SMART Technologies for Hong Kong Industry was held on 2 June 2017, attracting the attendance of 150 participants. The Division organised this annual conference with Industry 4.0 as the topic, to promote the use of engineering technologies and management practices and facilitate the exchange of information and ideas among members and kindred societies, and raise the standing and visibility of the manufacturing engineering profession. The guest of honour was Ir Dr the Hon W K Lo. 28
