The pool s black colour creates a river of lava that flows along the villa, as if it came from the crater in which it is built. The villa is conveniently built close to to the main Antiparos village, but turns its back to the developed part of the island to offer spectacular views of the western terrain and distant islands. A guesthouse is built further below the main villa, and is accessible via a corridor that comes out of the hill. The award-winning landscape design for Pigadakia was developed by the architecture practice of doxiadis+, following the principles of preservation and integration: on the one hand, existing traditional architecture, streams, plants and trees have been protected and incorporated in the overall design, and on the other a meticulous effort has been made to minimise architectural impact by using local materials, planting the roofs of some of the villas with local plants, and hiding all cables and pipework underground. Because of local development regulations, the plots of land in Antiparos must be larger than in other Greek islands, which means that properties have much more distance between them.
