SVARA Harmonic A monthly publication of the Saginaw Valley October, 2007 Amateur Radio Association Saginaw County Family Preparedness Day Do you get excited about Amateur radio and emergency communications? Like talking to people about your hobby? Then we have a fantastic opportunity for you! On Sunday September 30, 2007, Saginaw County Citizen Corps is sponsoring a "Family Preparedness Day" in Frankenmuth at Heritage Park's Kern Pavilion. The event will run from 2:00 until 6:00 PM and feature many of the counties police, fire, health and other emergency service agencies. The county has asked that SVARS s emergency service group (ARES) participate in this event and we have agreed to provide 3 different aspects of the group, ARES/RACES, Skywarn and ATV. The ARES/RACES booth will show the 2005 SET video and KD8AVA s PR video, hand out pamphlets on the group and give away special ARES pencils and When all else Fails stickers to the families that stop by demonstration. Also on display will be the emergency stations of KC8YVF and KD8AVA. People will also be able to try out 2 meter communications. The Skywarn booth will show a special video and hand out weather safety pamphlets provided by the National Weather Service in White Lake and talk about weather safety to family s the come by the display. The ATV booth will show live local amateur TV of the event and talk about ATV. The SVARA club trailer will also be on hand to demonstrate HF communication and 2 meter communication to the ARES station in the pavilion. This is a great opportunity to show the people of Saginaw County and our Served agencies who we are, what we do, and how we can benefit the community in times of need. This also provides a fantastic way to recruit new people to HAM radio and possible new members to the club. If you are an ARES/RACES member, a trained Skywarn spotter, or an ATV buff, we would like you to participate in this great event and help show off what Amateur Radio is all about. We also need individuals that can help set up the club trailer and run the HF and 2 meter stations. 10-12 people will be needed for this event, so get your name in early by contacting Ron Huss, KC8YVF at kc8yvf@arrl.net or call 989-751-3693. Reports: President: The President s report was not available. Secretary: A motion to accept last month s board minutes as printed in the Harmonic was initiated by KC8BYI and seconded by KC8YVF. All were in favor. Treasurer: The Treasurer s report, as approved by the August 3 rd general membership, was reviewed. Chair: Work on the 501 (c) (3) is continuing. The Development and Scholarship committee is near completing the application form for the SVARA Grant. Final board approval will be required. Old Business: KC8BYI brought up the subject of Broadband-over-Power Line (BPL). After some discussion amongst the board, the lingering subject was What can we, as a club, do to raise awareness of this issue? WA8GRI noted that our section manager, Jim Weaver, has, in the past, asked clubs and individuals not to act on this. KC8BDQ is to email Jim to see if there are any changes. KC8BYI directed members to the Care Break sign up sheet included with the treasurer s report. We still have a few spots to fill in. New Business: KC8YVF announced the Citizen s Corps intention to participate in Family Preparedness Day, Sunday, September 30 th. The event will run from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the Kern Pavilion in Heritage Park. YVF would like to have the club trailer there with demonstrations of ARES/RACES radios, SKYWARN and ATV. He asked the club for When All Else Fails stickers, at a cost of $8.00 per roll, to hand out. We suggested he get 3 rolls. He would also like to have some pencils or pens or the like printed up with SVARA contact info. KC8BDQ made a motion to give the Citizen s Corps $150.00 for this purpose. WA8GRI amended the motion for an additional $50.00 for a total of $200.00. KC8YVF seconded the amended motion and all were in favor. It was then suggested we might get a wind-up weather radio also to be raffled off, if funds permit. The board then discussed the possibility getting hats and safety vests emblazoned with the words Emergency Radio. It was suggested the club pre-purchase an amount of hats and vests for resale to club members, and a quantity of safety vests for loan during an event, then stored in the club trailer. KC8YF will get prices and prepare a proposal. KC8BDQ mentioned PRIDE Parade and the board decided to table the matter for the general membership. KC8YVF reminded the board of the upcoming S.E.T. October 6 th. Comments: KC8BYI asked KC8YVF to prepare articles on Family Preparedness Day and the S.E.T. for the September Harmonic. KC8BDQ asked the board if they would be interested in serving hot popcorn at Care Break. It was decided to hold off until we determine members ability/willingness to take on the extra task of making popcorn. WA8GRI mentioned that state maps are currently in printing so we may have trouble getting some. W8LPV said he would investigate other avenues. On a motion by KD8AVA, seconded by KC8YVF, the meeting closed at 8:55 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Jeff Weirauch, KC8BDQ Secretary
