1804-1806- Lewis and Clark 1840s- John C. Frémont four expeditions from the Rocky Mountains to California 1853 to 1860- Frederick West Lander five expeditions to find routes to the West Coast for wagon trains and railroads (Civil War: 1861-1865) 1867 to 1879Ferdinand Hayden: Yellowstone Canyon Clarence King: Sierra Nevada Mountains John Wesley Powell: Colorado River George Wheeler: Grand Canyon
These expeditions included scouts, surveyors, botanists, naturalists, and ethnologists. To record the physical appearance of the land, they also included photographers and artists.
Among the best known photographers were Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) Timothy O Sullivan (1840-1882) William Henry Jackson (1843-1942)

From 1901 to 1914, John Muir led the Sierra Club in the battle to protect the Hetch Hetchy Valley from being flooded as a reservoir for the City of San Francisco. Thomas Hill: FOLLOWING THE TRAIL OF HETCH ETCHY
In 1914, work began on the O Shaughnessy Dam, which was completed in 1934. The reservoir and dam supply water and hydro-electric power for San Francisco and the cities of the Bay Area.
