In 1908, a major fire ravaged downtown Trois-Rivières, but a small team of architects and businessmen successfully rebuilt it in just four years. This accounts for its architectural coherence: streets of uniform three and fourstorey brick buildings with flat roofs and adorned with cornices and window lintels, all typical of the eclectic Victorian style of the times. 1 2 > As you admire the building cornices along Rue Notre-Dame, what two family names do you see on the even-numbered side of the street? > What year appears in Roman numerals on a building at the corner of Notre-Dame Centre and Forges Streets? Turn RIGHT on RUE DES FORGES 3 > You ll see a building that houses the offices of a number of federal ministries. What is the name of this building? Walk to the MAIN ENTRANCE of the PORT OF TROIS-RIVIÈRES HARBOURFRONT PARK When you arrive at the park terrace at the end of Rue des Forges, look at the architecture of this building it resembles the bow of an ocean liner. In fact the entire Harbourfront Park features maritime themes.

4 5 > I am a mighty waterway linking the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. I m also one of the longest rivers in the world. What s my name? > In the winter of 1921, what enabled horses, cars and sleds to cross the river? Take the MONUMENTAL STAIRCASE up to THE PLATON 6 7 > The Laviolette Bridge is the longest steel frame bridge in Quebec and a majestic symbol of the city of Trois-Rivières. What was the year of its inauguration? > Can you find the year that Trois-Rivières was recognized at the Cultural Capital of Canada? Continue your way POST OFFICE (grey building on your left) 8 > After putting the following words in order, answer the question: protection of with led Iroquois the what treaty peace to demolition the in 1668 of place A? On Rue des Casernes is Le Platon, where Laviolette built the first fort that offered natural protection against the frequent attacks by the Iroquois.

Take RUE DES URSULINES 9 10 > On the cannon at Place d armes, what empire is represented by the two-headed eagle? > Who is Médard Chouart s brother-in-law? Hint: DCCCLXIII 11 12 13 14 15 > In what year was the home of Georges de Gannes built? > At the Ursulines convent is a sundial dating from 1860. What animal appears on the sundial? > What were the years of construction of the monastery and Anglican chapel? > What civic number on Rue des Ursulines opens a door to exhibitions on the history of the Ursulines? > Facing the monastery in the Jardin des Ursulines is a monument commemorating an important milestone? What was the milestone? Continue on to TERRASSE TURCOTTE

Terrasse Turcotte owes its existence to Mayor J.E. Turcotte, who, in 1857, had a road built in front of his home at 858 Terrasse Turcotte to offer the citizens of Trois-Rivières a site where they could stroll and enjoy the view of the river. 16 > The next man s important as you will soon learn But pronouncing his title can be a concern Start with the sixth note of Do, Re and Mi Add a word that means porch but stop at the D The end s not a spirit you can rhyme it with tree! One of the most illustrated citizens of Trois-Rivières was without question Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, Sieur de Lavérendrye (1685-1749), who went on to discover the Rocky Mountains in Western Canada. 17 > Behind you, facing the river, is a stained glass display. One of the panes presents the city s coat of arms on which is an inscription. What does it say? Turn RIGHT on RUE SAINT-LOUIS 18 > In the 1880s, the yellow house served as a consulate for what country? 19 > I was built in 1723 and have 17 windows adorning my façade. Who am I? The house at 669 Rue des Ursulines was built with stones from a former powder magazine, which in 1704 supplied gunpowder and ammunition.

Founded in 1634, Trois-Rivières is the second oldest French-speaking city in North America. Turn LEFT on RUE DES URSULINES and head to PLACE PIERRE-BOUCHER 20 21 22 23 24 > Queen Elizabeth II unveiled an inscription here; on what date did the unveiling take place? > Who was the torch built to honour? > What was the name of the church that stood at the Sacré-Cœur site from 1710 to 1908? > Cross the h in d y and continue along Rue Bonaventure. > Near the Manoir de Niverville is a monument erected in honour of Maurice Duplessis. What important Quebec event took place during his term as Premier and on what date? At 240 Rue Bonaventure lived the Honourable Maurice L. Duplessis, Member of the Quebec National Assembly for the Trois-Rivières region from 1927 to 1959 and Premier of the Province of Quebec from 1936 to 1939 and from 1944 to 1959.

25 26 > From where you are standing, you can see the Trois-Rivières Cathedral not too far away. In what year was the Cathedral built? > Walk over to 171 Rue Bonaventure. There s a fence surrounding the patio. Where did it originate? Walk to the TROIS-RIVIÈRES CATHEDRAL 27 > What time can you attend mass on Sunday? Cross the street and head to PARC CHAMPLAIN 28 29 > Who was the first historian to publish works on the history of the French Canadians? > The Exhibition Centre inside the Maison de la Culture is named for a famous Quebecois painter. What is his name? At 2,707 metres, the Laviolette Bridge is not only the longest steel frame bridge in Quebec, it s also the only span that crosses the St. Lawrence River between Quebec City and Montreal. Its name honours the founder of Trois-Rivières, and its inauguration on December 20, 1967, brought an end to the age of ferry boats in Trois- Rivières.

Trois-Rivières is the Poetry Capital of the World, not only because it has hosted a world-renowned poetry festival for more than 25 years, but also because it is home to a number of permanent poetry-related installations: Promenade internationale de la poésie, Boite à poèmes, Maison de la poésie, Monument to the unknown poet, and many Trois-Rivières poets who stand among the best known in the province. 30 31 32 > Near the Maison de la Culture, find the excerpt Il fait tout fou dans nous ( there s a delirium within us ), and name the author. > Find the monument near the Boîte à poèmes at Place Alphonse Piché. Who is it dedicated to and what is special about it? > The J.-Antonio-Thompson Hall is one of Quebec s most beautiful performance venues and has been awarded a number of prizes in this regard. How many Félix trophies are displayed in the Hall? Turn LEFT 33 > What is the name of the street you re now on, with its many charming restaurants and cafés? STOP CONGRATULATIONS! YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE RALLY. Enjoy the city!
