MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMP 2017 Welcome to Bird River Bible Camp! We are so excited that you are planning to attend Bird River Bible Camp this summer! BRBC is a Christian camp, and a ministry of Southland Church. It exists to teach campers about the Bible in accordance with Southland s beliefs and practices. This package is designed to give campers and their parents important information about our summer camping programs. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact our Camp Registrar at info@birdriver.camp. And if you have specific questions about Middle School Camp please contact Pastor Thom Dick at thomd@mysouthland.com!

DATES Camp Session Dates Middle School Camp #1 (Grades 5-8) Sunday, July 23 Friday, July 28, 2017 Middle School Camp #2 (Grades 5-8) Sunday, July 30 Friday, August 4, 2017 Middle School Camp #3 (Grades 5-8) Monday, August 7 Friday, August 11, 2017 Middle School Camp #4 (Grades 5 8) Sunday, August 13 Friday, August 18, 2017 DEPOSIT & REFUND POLICIES DEPOSIT POLICY All rates include a deposit of $50, which is non-refundable. Due to limited availability, spaces will NOT be held without a deposit. The remaining balance is due by the time the camper leaves for Camp. Please make cheques payable to Southland Church. Should the camper raise enough funds through our fundraising program to cover the outstanding balance as well as the $50 deposit, the deposit will be reimbursed. REFUND POLICY If cancellation is made up to TWO WEEKS prior to the camp session, refund of the fee minus deposit of $50 will be given. If LESS THAN TWO WEEKS prior to camp session, there is NO REFUND except for medical emergencies. No refunds will be given for campers who withdraw from camp for any reason during the camp session, or who are sent home for disciplinary or medical reasons. Refund requests must be made in writing prior to October 1, 2017. GETTING TO CAMP Transportation to and from camp is provided at NO ADDITIONAL COST to the camper. Parents choosing to provide their own transportation need to contact Southland Church NO LESS THAN 2 weeks before the camper s week at camp. TRAVELLING BY BUS Check-in of campers will begin at 1:30 pm on the first day of each Middle School Camp. Please plan to be at Southland Church at this time to ensure you have enough time to get through the Check-in process as it has changed from previous years. The Check-in process is quite simple, but will take some time. It includes the following: - Letting the Check-in staff know that your child has arrived - KIDS & MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPS: Letting us know who is picking your child up at the bus on the last day of camp. The name(s) we are given are the only people who will be allowed to pick your child up. - Paying any outstanding fees - A visit to the Nurse which includes handing in any medications they will be bringing to camp along with instructions and a Lice-check. We are conducting lice-checks at the church BEFORE campers get on the bus to go to camp. If your child is found to have lice, they will not be permitted to attend camp. For this reason, please do not put your camper s luggage in the marked luggage area until you have finished the Check-in process. The bus will leave for Bird River Bible Camp at 2:30 pm. The bus will then return to Southland Church on Friday at 3:45 pm. Bird River Bible Camp 2017 2

PROVIDING YOUR OWN TRANSPORTATION If you are providing your own transportation, arrive at Bird River Bible Camp on Sunday at 4:30 pm (please do not arrive early). Upon arrival at camp, please find one of our Bird River Bible Camp Staff to go through the Check-in process, which includes the following: - Letting the Check-in staff know that your child has arrived - KIDS & MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPS: Letting us know who is picking your child up at the bus on the last day of camp. The name(s) we are given are the only people who will be allowed to pick your child up. - Paying any outstanding fees - A visit to the Nurse which includes handing in any medications they will be bringing to camp along with instructions and a Lice-check. If your child is found to have lice, they will not be permitted to attend camp. Campers may be picked up on Friday at 1:00 pm. If you are not at the camp by 1:45 pm on Friday to pick up your child, they will be sent home on the bus to ensure that they have a ride home. Please take note that it takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes to get to the camp from Steinbach. LOCATION OF THE CAMP Bird River Bible Camp is located approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes northeast of Steinbach near Lac Du Bonnet, Manitoba. Directions from Steinbach: 1. MEDICAL INFORMATION MEDICATION All medication must be in the original bottle with the sufficient supply in a Ziploc bag along with clear instructions (on the bottle or written out). We ask that all medication be taken out of the luggage before your child arrives at the church on the first day of camp as we will be collecting the medication before they get on the bus. All medication will be administered (during the week) by the nurse, NOT the camper, who will be on site for the duration of your child s stay at camp. THE CAMP NURSE All of our Camp Nurses are certified/practicing LPNs or RNs, medical doctors, or paramedics, with a certified RN onsite at all times. IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY In case of an emergency, the parents/guardians listed on the camper s application will be contacted first. However, should the parents not be available at the time of the call, a Senior Staff Member will call the Emergency Contacts listed on their application. The nearest hospital to the camp is the Pinawa Hospital, which is a 20 minute drive from the camp. In the event a doctor prescribes medication for your child during his/her stay, the parents/guardians will be contacted and billed for the cost of the prescription. Bird River Bible Camp 2017 4

BUNKING ARRANGEMENTS Campers are grouped in cabins based on gender as well as table or cell group at church and age. Campers may request to be in the same cabin with a friend. It is important for both campers to make the request on their application form. We will try to accommodate these requests to the best of our ability. COUNSELOR TO CAMPER RATIO The following counselor to camper ratios are used when staffing cabins. Regardless of camper enrollment, there is a minimum of two counselors in each cabin. Kids Camps: Females 1 counselor for every 4 campers Middle School Camps: Females 1 counselor for every 4 campers High School Camps: Females 1 counselor for every 6 campers SUPERVISION STAFF DURING CAMP The camp is staffed with Camp Director, Program Director, Skills Staff (including certified Lifeguards) and Counselors. Support Staff include Food Services, Maintenance and Caretaking personnel. A certified nurse is on site during all camps. Special precautions are taken during water activities and certified lifeguards are on duty at all swim times. ALL CAMP STAFF Each applicant has been carefully screened by the Church Leadership and hand-picked by our Camp Leadership Team. PHONE CALLS Although we discourage campers from phoning home during their stay at camp, there may be situations where it is necessary. All camper phone calls are authorized and supervised by Senior Camp Staff. Bird River Bible Camp 2017 5
