The soloist chosen to celebrate this anniversary was the renowned international pianist Michel Camilo, who flooded the atmosphere of the warm Christmas night (over 20º C) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with his Caribbean jazz rhythms, while the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife (OST) performed under the masterful baton of Michal Nesterowicz. Attendance expectations were exceeded also this year. The usual capacity of twenty thousand people was largely exceeded. Several thousand of attendees could not access the venue at the dock of Los Llanos and followed the concert from the service road of the port and from the Maritime Avenue of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Within the programme it is worth mentioning some pieces of West Side Story, by Leonard Bernstein, and Rhapsody in Blue, by George Gershwin. These interpretations reached its climax with the long piano improvisation on mambo rhythm performed by Camilo who turned into this what had begun sounding like the March Radetzky. The whole audience was fascinated by the improvisational skills shown by the Dominican pianist, who came under the halo of having recently won a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album of 2013. As usual, the Canary Christmas carol Una sobre el mismo mar was warmly welcome by the public. In this twentieth edition of the Christmas Concert the carol was performed by the singers Irene Niebla and José Manuel Ramos. However, the concert transcended the limits of the Port of Tenerife thanks to the collaboration of Spanish Radio and Television (RTVE) and Movistar: ten millions people around the world followed the broadcast which was offered by the above corporations, on radio, television and the Internet. Only the international channel of TVE reaches sixty million homes across five continents. The live broadcast of TVE for the Canaries and the broadcast of the Spanish National Radio for the entire country were followed, in total, by about 100,000 people. To this figure must be added the 40,000 viewers who saw the recorded broadcast of the concert offered by TVE on the morning of 26 December. This concert means a musical gift to the city of Tenerife and has involved an international promotion for the island in recent years. That is why all the entities that, together with the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, make possible this Christmas musical event deserve a particular recognition: Boluda Group, CEPSA, DISA Foundation, El Corte Ingles, Obra Social La Caixa, Cajasiete, Acciona Trasmediterránea, ASPROCAN, Montesano, McDonald's, Fred. Olsen, La Esponja del Teide OchoPro, Sonopluss, SATO as well as RTVE and Movistar.
THE MUSIC OF SOLIDARITY The echoes of the XX Christmas Concert of the Ports of Tenerife still rang in Tenerife in mid-january. On the 17th of January, the president of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Rodríguez Zaragoza, and the manager of Disa Foundation, Raquel Montes Suárez gave a donation of 20,000 euros on behalf of Disa Foundation to the manager of the Hospital San Juan de Dios, Juan Manuel de León García, and to the superior of the Hospitaller Order in Tenerife, José Ramón Pérez Acosta. The mentioned foundation sponsoring the XX Christmas Concert of the Ports of Tenerife pledged to donate a euro to the Tenerife Hospital San Juan de Dios for each of the attendees to the musical event. Following this formal ceremony, Juan Manuel de León and José Ramón Pérez showed their two guests the facilities for the care of the disabled and the unit of sports medicine in the hospital. In addition they explained the projects for which the funds donated by Disa Foundation will be used. The first one is called "Elderly at home" and its purpose is to meet the need of orthoprothesic material to facilitate people with severe mobility problems to return home after hospital discharge, under the care and supervision of their families. It is thought for those patients with socio-economic needs and who have family support. The programme "Olympia" will also receive some resources. This aims to provide the necessary material to the unit of sports medicine at the Hospital San Juan de Dios for the medical examinations of athletes with mental, physical or sensory disabilities. This unit of sports medicine is the only one in Tenerife accredited by the Canary Health Service to carry out medical revisions to the athletes in clubs of the island participating in national competitions. Therefore, its beneficiary will be the sports club ADEMI, association practicing different sports at national and international level, which has achieved significant successes. Thus, over a hundred different types of athletes with disabilities will be able to perform all the necessary test for their medical revisions through the acquisition of manual cycle ergometers and further material. During her visit, Raquel Montes highlighted the importance of this donation to Disa Foundation since this way they extend to Tenerife their long collaboration with the Hospitaller Order in Gran Canaria. Meanwhile, Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza welcomed the social significance that the Christmas Concert of the Port Authority acquires, apart from being a cultural activity and a way to promote Tenerife worldwide.
SIX MILESTONES AND TWO MEMORIALS KEEP ALIVE THE HEROIC DEED OF JULY 25TH From July, 22nd - 25th, the English Rear Admiral Horace Nelson wanted to conquer Tenerife, one of the always strategic Canary Islands. He did no succeed, because the whole population opposed under under Lieutenant General Antonio Gutiérrez de Otero, who put an end to the conquest defeating the British Navy. Nelson lost his right forearm and his life was put at risk. This great deed by the population of Tenerife, the Gesta 25 de Julio is being subject of special recognition by the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the City Hall based on a proposal by the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio. A number of milestones and memorials referred to this victory have been installed.
