Invitation Letter Distinguished, The Belt and Road Initiative as a major national development strategy, has been bringing multiple development opportunities to China economy. Shipping as a global industry, follows the global economic development trend. Structural change in China economy, shift in global economy and trade models, strengthened awareness of environmental protection, renewable energy and its corresponding technological development as well as the deeper integration of new-generation information technology and shipping industry are posing new challenges and creating new opportunities in all aspects for port and shipping industry. Therefore, Shanghai Maritime University and Shanghai International Shipping Institute plan to hold New Era Breeds New Opportunities, Forum on Innovation and Development in Port & Shipping Industry on December 20, 2017 (Wednesday) at Shanghai Ocean Hotel, and invite experts at home and abroad to exchange ideas about the innovation and development of shipping industry, so as to promote China's shipping industry to face new normal, seek new breakthroughs, and achieve new development. Appendix 1 Objective The Belt and Road Initiative is a major development strategy in China. Since its first proposal in 2013, from point to surface, with steady progress, the initiative has made a series of important achievements in early period, which has brought multiple development opportunities to China economy. At the same time, China economy is facing structural changes, thus there is an urgent need for more efforts on supply-side reform in order to adapt to these changes. As a global industry, shipping follows the global economic development trend. Changes in economy and trade models, strengthening of environmental protection regulations, renewable energy and its corresponding technological development as well as the deeper integration of new-generation information technology and shipping industry are addressing new challenges and creating new opportunities in all aspects. The Forum will explore how to take advantage of historical opportunities brought about by the Belt and Road Initiative, supply-side structural reform, and new technological revolution, to stimulate the innovation vitality of port and shipping industry, improve production capacity and operational efficiency of enterprises, to ensure sustainable development of industry, and thus to accelerate the accomplishment of strategic goals at shipping power and marine power. Themes 1. An expanded in-depth reform and opening-up agenda on shipping field in the pilot free trade zones. 2. Seize the strategic opportunities and promote One Belt One Road interconnection construction. 3. Supply-side structural reform boosts sound development in port and shipping industry. 4. Innovation and development in port and shipping industry: new energy, new technologies, new challenges, and new opportunities.
