In 1838, the I&M canal Commissioners built it to store black powder, ropes, lumber, tools and provisions needed for the thousandds of workers who dug the I&M Canal by hand. The state s tool shed got a fancy three-story Italianate addition in 1859, which later became a general store and grain warehouse. In 1878 local businessman George Gaylord moved his general store here. After the heyday of the I&M Canal, the building housed a lock works and plumbing supply house. By the 1970s it was altered, abandonded and cut off from street access. In the 1980s, George Gaylord s grandson Gaylord Donnelley and his family rehabilitated the building to its Civil War-era glory. Four pedestrian bridges provide access to the public for hiking, biking and fishing opportunities in a nearly 100 acre pristine natural area previously inaccessible for recreation. During construction of the I & M Canal, an exceptionally fine grade of dolomite limestone was discovered in Lemont which was mined from 1850 to 1900.
