TWJBNTYQJFIIVIB YJBAJRS AGO IIN TIHtJB JRAMUBJLJBJR~ ld)ib.ccibmibjbjr 1966 By Dale Green, Historian GHOSTS (AND GOBLINS) OF HALLOWEENS PAST A feature attraction of Halloween Parties 20-30 years ago was the Spook Alley, concocted by those two wild and crazy guys for Ogden, Clix Byrne and Harold Bingham. Clix was a specialist at creating the most bizarre, grotesque costumes and visual scenes ever imagined. All of the dormitory space upstairs was transformed into a stage to display the results of what many thought was a warped mind. Greeting guests were ferocious gorillas, who, of course, escaped their cage to molest everyone passing. After wending your way through various other sights and sounds, the Mad Doctor, Earl Hanson, performed open heart surgery on some poor, hapless soul who looked as if he had recently returned from the grave. For realism, Earl used real hearts and other organs (not human), obtained from who knows where. Passing through a duck under lead you to a dimly-lit room in the Bates Motel, where an old, white-haired lady sat in a rocking chair. Just as you approached close enough to glimpse the skeleton, someone jumped from the shadows with a knife, then... (you know the rest). Clix and Harold's Spook Alley was a always a great attraction -- it was not unusual to find over 100 people in attendance. Present conservationists who worry about the effects of the CUP with diversions of water from the Uintas to the Wasatch Front would be aghast at NA W AP A, a project proposed 25 years ago. At a projected cost of only $100 billion, the idea was to reverse the flow of waters from four major Alaskan rivers plus several large Canadian streams and route them to the thirsty Southwest and Great Lakes, producing electrical power on route. A dam 1,700 feet high would back up a 500 mile-long lake, filling the Rocky Mountain Trench in British Columbia, while 15 others larger than Lake Mead would be created. A canal for sea-going ships would extend from the Pacific Coast to the Great Lakes. ~ DIGITAL STEREO HISTORICAL ~ VIDEO /j\.tdl' PRODUCTIONS NORMFISH 6309 West Milden Lane West Valley City, Utah 84120 QUALITY VIDEO TELEPHONE (801) 964-6155 Feature Length Historical oocumentary Outdoors Weddings Conferences Receptions Video Prints Editing Wireless Sound 3

DffiECTORS NEEDED Have you ever thought of being on a Board of Directors? Why not? I was on the board for four years and learned a lot about budgets, scheduling, management, and people. Not only I helped the Club, but the Club helped me learn these skills that I now utilize in my work and play. The Board makes important decisions concerning the direction and focus for the Club, such as the Lodge sewer and the Olympics a few years ago. Members of the board discuss and vote on these issues. The Club needs your help to keep functioning. We are currently looking for the positions listed below for next year beginning in March. If you have time to help build a better Club, please call and volunteer. lflr. (Q) M TIHIJE JB(Q)A TING ID>IIJRJECCroIR. by Randy Klein If you missed the permit planning meeting meeting, please contact someone who went or call me at 774-6239. Carl Cook has updated the river permit addresses and information form, and there are several changes of addresses and/or phone numbers this year. So be sure to get your updated agency list and suggested launch dates to request. Applying for permits is a very important activity. The more club boaters who are involved, the more successful our next river season will be. HELP, WE NEED PERMITS!!! Its simple... NO PERMITS, NO RIVER ~UNNING! If you want to run any of the major nvers next year you have to apply for permits NOW. Don't be shy, you don't need to be the trip leader to get a permit. If you get a permit there are always many qualified people who will organize and run the trip for you. T~e chances of obtaining a permit are getting slimmer each year so it is important that anyone who ~ants to run rivers next year apply for the lottenes which are run at the beginning of the year: ~e first step is usu~lly to obtain a permit application through the mail or phone, then fill it out and make sure it is received by the deadline. In the spring, after the lotteries are done we will be running a planning meeting to organize trips for which we received permits. DO IT NOW!! With the holidays coming up many people put it off until it is too late. The address/phone numbers of the offices in charge of ~ach river segment are listed below, along with important dates. If you have any questions, such as which dates to apply for or how to fill out the application, PLEASE call Mike Dege (571-7684) or Randy Klein (Layton 546-3917). lfr (Q)M[ llodgle jfihij.b DlllR.lECTOJR LAST CHANCE FOR INPUT ON LODGE IMPROVEMENTS BEFORE JANUARY BOARD DECISION by Vince Desimone, Lodge Director COMMENTS REGARDING PLUMBING AT THE LODGE By Frank Atwood The WMC annual meeting resulted in a spirited discussion of the options for the Lodge. I appreciate the care and concern for the WMC and the Lodge expressed by participants. Now is the last opportunity to give input before the Board makes a decision on what will be done. The "sense" of the meeting I came away with was that there is a leaning toward replacing the Goodro Annex with a new entry and access to newly constructed toilet facilities in the basement. This would require developing a water supply system and hooking up to the sewer. Some of the points brought out in discussion were: * Hooking up to the sewer system is a responsible act in that it would avoid potential contamination of canyon water quality from lodge sources. * Food preparation and clean up would be made easier and more sanitary. * Utility/personal hygiene would be enhanced with flush toilets and water. * Some expressed t!1e desire to maintain current minimal facilities instead. * Members would likely see an increase in dues and/or lodge user fees to support improvements. * The number of overnight guests the lodge could accommodate would be reduced since sewer fees are based on the number of beds. * Demand for use of the lodge would likely increase as would user fees to pay for increased costs of operating new facilities. The Board is open to receiving additional input prior to making a decision. Call me ( 1-649-6805) or any Board member with your thoughts by January 5, 1991. 42 How primitive, rustic or sanitary do we want our lodge experiences to be? My nose says: "Give me flush toilets." My heart knows too often no one is going to clean up after someone. My mouth says with hesitation: "Pit toilets and safe, potable water in the kitchen." Despite scale and location of plumbing being significant, I feel the most important aspect is ease of cleaning, for that reason I advocate: 1. Pit commodes, not flush, in order to deliberately discourage use. 2. Kitchen sinks should be fully plumbed with potable water to "sanitize" party preparations and protect our water rights. I'm splitting hairs with the choices in the October Rambler. I'd like to use this article also as an opportunity to provide a framework to discuss scale and location of plumbing: I picture scale of plumbing going from the primitive to the absurd: The woods Outdoor out house - just down the hill from the lodge. Indoor pits - currently what we have Kitchen sink with cold water Kitchen sink with hot and cold running water - The level of what I advocate Flush commodes Bathroom sink with cold water Bathroom sink with hot water - The limit of the level I feel is acceptable Shower stalls Dishwasher

COMMENTS (continued) An aside is: I'd like see a freeze-proof sprinkler system put into the lodge to minimize fire damage. This topic is premature, because, first we must decide if we want water at all, then decide the follow-on, do we want a sprinkler system. This issue contains the latest Membership list. Please take a minute to review your name and address. If any corrections are needed, please let me know, Julie Jones, 278-4753 I picture the commode scale of location going from outdoor to adjacent: Outdoors pits Indoors First floor pits - what I advocate. Basement flush toilets First floor flush toilets Annex flush toilets Location is not so significant to me as lighting and ventilation. I accept the basement, as long as, the lighting and ventilation are more than adequate. I realize ventilation and freeze proofing are often mutually exclusive; still, I want very good ventilation. I am very appreciative of Vince Desimone eagerness to let the decision process be a club consensus followed by a board decision in order to resolve this issue. I enjoyed the meeting on October 17. Again, I feel ease of cleaning and maintenance should dictate extent of plumbing; I think this means stick with pit toilets, but put in potable water at the kitchen sink. Flush toilets are nice, but too cleaning and maintenance labor intensive. FOREST SERVICE RELEASES HIGH UINTAS EIS By George Nickas Utah Wilderness Association The Wasatch-Cache National Forest has released a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) that will determine future management for a large portion (32,000 acres) of the Uinta's North Slope. The East Fork Blacks Fork draft EIS covers all national forest lands in the East Fork and Middle Fork Blacks Fork from the forest boundary to the High Uintas Wilderness. Included are 15,000 acres of roadless lands adjacent to the Wilderness, lands that conservationists have long proposed as critical additions to the 460,000-acre High Uintas Wilderness. The Forest Service describes the area as "some of the most picturesque areas in a drainage noted for its scenic qualities." The EIS was spurred by oil and gas industry attempts to lease the East Fork and a general uncertainty on the part of the Forest Service of how to best manage the area. Though the agency claims to have not settled on a preferred action, most alternatives are heavily weighted toward development. Public comments are being accepted until October 9, 1991. The East Fork Blacks Fork is noted for its wild character. The last reported sighting of a native bighorn sheep, prior to recent reintroductions, was made in an area the Forest Service is now considering for oil and gas development. It's common to see moose browsing in the willow-filled basins. Pine marten, goshawks and the great grey owl reside in its extensive old-growth stands. Lynx and wolverine, if they still exist at all in Utah, would likely be in the East Fork. The flora and fauna of the North Slope are unique in Utah, resembling the Northern Rocky Mountains more than any other Intermountain range. And nowhere is the feeling of that wild country more profound than in the East Fork. The EIS proposes several alternatives ranging from "No Action" (leave it as is), to extensive timber harvesting, oil and gas development and domestic sheep use. Several alternatives would allow A TVs on the Bear River-Smith's Fork trail a route now used only by hikers and horseback riders. The trail traverses the roadless area, offering stunning views of Tokewanna Peak and numerous wet and dry meadows dotting lodgepole pine and spruce forests along the Middle Fork. Early each summer 18,000 sheep make their way up the Blacks Fork "sheep driveway" on their way to grazing allotments throughout the Uintas. These sheep roam up this scenic driveway and head into the high country of the Smith's Fork, Henry's Fork, Black's Fork and Lake Fork. All of these sheep, of course, return by the same routes before snow flies in the fall. Literally, over 200,000 hooves pulverize the Blacks Fork every year leaving 65% of the driveway's rangeland in unsatisfactory condition according to the EIS! That's not to mention the damage done by these sheep in the Uinta's alpine basins. ' 1 l 44

FOREST SERVICE RELEASES (continued) Yet, surprisingly, not a single alternative proposes reducing the number of sheep in the Uintas, because the Forest Service chose not to analyze the entire grazing allotments. To understand and appreciate the impacts of the sheep driveway, the high basin allotments where the sheep eventually graze must also be considered. This analysis, which would look at all of the issues and assumptions around grazing of sheep, is desperately needed. Extensive timber cutting is contemplated in the Middle Fork's old-growth lodgepole pine and spruce forests, some of which lie above 10,400 feet elevation. Rare old-growth obligate wildlife species like pine marten, goshawks, hairy woodpeckers, and great gray owls would be pushed ever closer to the brink of extirpation. This despite recognized regeneration problems at such high elevations, and despite Forest Plan direction that "[A]reas above 10,000 feet elevation would remain unroaded until the next plan revision". Several miles of new roads would be required to reach the timber. But we can make a difference. Just a few months ago many of you responded to a UW A article requesting the Forest Service eliminate grazing on three vacant sheep allotments on the eastern end of the Uintas. And it worked! Last month the Vernal District Ranger issued her decision closing the Chepeta and Whiterocks areas to sheep grazing and leaving the Lakeshore area ungrazed. Public input weighed heavily in that decision. And now we must show the same resolve and commitment to the North Slope. WHAT YOU CAN DO: 2. No timber harvesting should occur except to treat areas already harvested. Maintain all old-growth and old-growth related species. Do not fragment habitat with timber harvesting, road building or other vegetation "treatments". 3. Close the Bear River Smiths Fork Trail and all roadless lands to vehicle use. 4. Reduce the number of sheep using the "sheep driveway" to allow total recovery of vegetation and to reduce conflicts with recreation and wildlife in the high country. Analyze the allotments linked to the driveway, not just the driveway. **NEWS RELEASE ** URBAN FORESTRY BOARD NEEDS DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVES The Salt Lake City Urban Forestry Board, an advisory group to the Salt Lake City Urban Forester, Mayor and City Council on the matters pertaining to the city's Urban Forestry Program, currently has volunteer positions open for the three city Council Districts Council Districts 2, 4 and 5. Members representing each of the Council Districts must reside in that district. The Board meets in the evening on the first Tuesday of each month in the City Hall. A time commitment of five hours a month is asked to best serve on the Board. If you are interested in becoming a Board member and serving your community, please call 972-7818 for an application. The Forest Service is soliciting public comments on the East Fork Blacks Fork EIS until October 9, 1991. Please write a letter to Steve Ryberg, Evanston District Ranger, 1565 Highway 150 South, Suite A, Evanston, WY 82930. Consider making the following recommendations in your letter: 1. Do not issue any oil and gas leases in the analysis area, particularly in the roadless area south of the North Slope road. 45

WMC MAP/GUIDEBOOK RESOURCE LIBRARY by Michael Budig The Wasatch Mountain Club has always been a great resource of knowledge regarding the interesting places in the Intermountain Region. It seems like members are always voyaging into new and unfamiliar territory. However, for those adventursome souls who wish to explore new places, the art of obtaining adequate and useful maps and guidebooks can be difficult and expensive. To encourage exploration of new worlds, the WMC Board of Directors has approved the concept of establishing a map and guidebook resource library. I have agreed to spearhead this effort and we will proceed to accumulate and catalog maps and guidebooks relating to hiking, climbing, river-running, skiing, cycling, and anything else which may seem useful. The library will be stored at the Club office. I live nearby and have a key to the office which I will make available on request. We want to begin by asking Club members for donations of any maps and guidebooks with which they may be willing to part. In particular, we would appreciate donations of documents which are no longer in print. We will then set up a filing system. Club Historian Dale Green recently received a large number of out-of-print topographical maps. This will provide a good start. All donations will be greatly appreciated. In addition, offers of assistance from Club members are welcome. A couple of members have already offered to help. If you're interested in volunteering to help or in donating items, please call me at 328-4512. With your help, the Wasatch Mountain Club will become even greater and will off er one more valuable resource to its members. WESTWATER CANYON September 7 & 8, 1991 by Anne Childs After a rainy night's sleep at the put in, broken only by the sound of trains (really, at least 12), we awoke to a sunny Saturday morning. Someone expressed dismay at having left the suntan lotion behind. Someone else was worried that the life jacket would ruin her tan lines. This was not to be a problem, however. The first leg of the trip was peaceful and relaxi~g... then we entered the canyon. Before we knew lt, we had three people separated from their boats. The first was Carol, who was ejected from the raft. A wave bumped her from one side to the other. "I was heading right for Pat, but she ducked!" It was fortunate for Carol that she hung on to her paddle. In a desperate attempt to rescue it, the crew pulled her on board too. Next in the water was Lynn, a kayaker. John, another kayaker, managed to move Lynn his boat and his paddle to an eddy - actually eddy after eddy. This particular spot offered no place to stand and the eddys were proving hard to anchor in for both the raft and the oar rig. The passengers attempted to hang onto the smooth canyon walls leaving fingernails behind. At one such point a~ Donna, _the oar?g captain, was standing on a ledge attemptmg to tie up, the raft, trying for the same edd~, knocked the oar rig back into the current, forcmg Donna to do a swan dive back into the boat...and it was off to the next eddy. We finally found a nice big eddy where Lynn could safely get back into his boat. By the time we got to the takeout, a thunder storm was upon us. It was CLOSE! Lightning and thunder almost simultaneously. We raced to get the gear packed. The fellows taking apart the oar frame really hustled! Just as the last piece of gear was stowed, a torrential rain hit. Within minutes the place was flooded. It seemed like driving upstream. The rain tapered off by dinner time. We were able to cook and even had Steve's big tent set up for all to hide in should it pour again. U!1fortunately, when the rain came, so did the wmd.!~ere went ~teve's tent. Alas. In spite of it all, spmts were high and we were all having a good time. This says something about the hearty and good natured souls in the WMC. Even Donna ~anaged a smile (~ventually) after turning for a picture and spoomng spaghetti sauce onto her (sandal clad) foot. Due. to the rain and mud, the gear was not ready, makmg a Sunday launch impossible. A relaxing lunch at Ray's made a nice second choice. Even running out of gas on the way home wasn't a big deal. After all, "It was the gas pump's fault." The participants were: Janet Curry, Randy Klein, D~mna Kramer, Carol Synakiewicz, Jim Gully, Rich Stone, Steve Grizzell, Rick Kirkland Co~leen Kirkland, Pat Fields, Lynn Peterson, Joh~ Childs and Anne Childs. Right about then Donna noticed: "There goes Randy's boa!." We all looked up to see Randy meekly wavmg at us from the bank as his boat headed through the rapids upside down and alone.!ohn chased Randy's boat and Randy made a leap mto the oar rig when it was still 12 feet from shore. This was a little more excitement than most of us had_ bargained for. By now it had gotten cloudy aga~n.. It was cold and the wind had picked up. (This is Westwater, remember.) The rest of the trip was mild in comparison, though the scout at skull was a little hairy. 47

THE GRAND CANYON RIM TO RIM October 11, 1991 Text and Photo by Carol Nelson On October 11th of this year, I hiked the Grand Canyon - rim to rim - alone - in one day - in Tevas - and it was wonderful! Next year, if anyone would like to join me, I'd like to make it a club hike. This is a hike I'd wanted to do for years; I am so in love with the Grand Canyon. I'd experienced it in most of the other ways (the river run, the mules, hiked it down one day and up the next, etc.) but I wanted to do it clean across in one day. It's almost 25 miles total (approximately 15 down from the North Rim side to the river and 10 miles up the South Rim side - using the Bright Angel Trail.) There is a shorter trail up, but it's much steeper. The trail is good, but rutted from the mules and here and there, logs and rocks have been placed to prevent erosion, so foot high "steps" are formed regularly. The first five miles down are very steep to about Roaring 48 Springs, then it's a gentle up and down (mostly down) along side Bright Angel Creek. A stop at Phantom Ranch at the bottom (flush toilets, snacks, bandages, ICE WATER & ice for the water bottles for the hike up - even in October, it was 99 at the bottom). Then across the Colorado River, a mile or so along the river thru some sand and then UP! Indian Gardens Campground is about 1/2 way up and from there on it's steep and mostly switchbacks. I brought along a walking stick for the up side and I really, really used it. What a friend it became. The camaraderie along the trail is so nice. On the way up, you keep passing the same penple as they rest and then, you do. Many of them are foreigners but the sign language for "phew!" seems universal. I kept looking up but the edge of the rim never seemed to be getting any closer.

THE GRAND CANYON (continued) Finally, I reached the top and I can't tell you the excitement and elation and satisfaction I felt. I had done it! I had hiked one of the most spectacular canyons in the world!---- then, strawberry daiquiris at the El Tovar Hotel (it's tradition). There are about 12 to 12 1/2 hours of light at that time of year. So I began at 7:15AM Utah time and reached the top at 6PM - 10 and 3/4 hours later. Not bad for a semi-couch potato. It was wonderful! The trail is good enough to finish in the dark, with the help of a flash light, if you need to.... why the Tevas??? I have really weird feet and I can't hike long distances in enclosed shoes. So, I've glued foam inner soles on the Tevas and with the help of lots of moleskin, salve between the toes, baby powder, two thin pairs of socks and one thick pair, I was able to do it with minimal discomfort and blisters. Other hikers sure make comments along the way! It's usually cold on the North Rim in October, this early in the morning, sometimes below freezing. But a few layers are usually enough. And after just a little while, one by one, the layers are shed, as you descend. I drink "Goodinaid" by the quart, going down and up. It seems to help and I nibble all the way. The only real rests I took were about 1/2 hour each, at Phantom Ranch and Indian Gardens. It was enough that I felt refreshed and ready to go on. The autumn colors were incredible this year. From 1-15 to 89, I drove across the Cedar Breaks Parkway and it was magnificent.. The North Rim was also. The only thing that would cancel this trip would be deep snow on the North Rim but this doesri't usually begin until late October. 49
