West Point Project U.S. Army Corps of Engineers VOLUNTEER VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT Posted: 1/12/2018 Current Volunteer Coordinator: Park Ranger Rebecca Downey Rebecca.m.downey@usace.army.mil 706-645-6113 West Point Project Management Office 500 Resource Management Drive West Point, GA 31833

About West Point Project West Point Lake is located on the Georgia/Alabama state line just north of Opelika, AL and Columbus, GA and south of Atlanta, GA. The Project is one of many on the Chattahoochee River operated and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the purpose of flood control. Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers West Point Project manages 21 Day-Use Parks including three beach areas and four campgrounds (Whitetail Ridge, Holiday, Amity and R. Shaefer Heard Campgrounds). The West Point Project averages 1.5 million visitors annually. There are 525 miles of shoreline with 25,864 acres of water. Seasonally, there are 10,000 acres of USACE managed hunting in addition to another 10,000 managed by the WMA. West Point Lake is quiet, lots of wildlife, 21 miles of multiuse trails, has 2 leased marinas, and is known for its wide range of recreation uses including fishing, kayaking, boating, sailing, hunting, biking, hiking, swimming and diving opportunities. Volunteer Program The Volunteer Program is an essential part of West Point Project operations that allows our many parks and campgrounds to remain open, provide clean facilities to the public and to provide knowledge and education to the estimated 1.5 million visitors who come to West Point Lake every year. During the summer recreation season, the Volunteer Program averages 32 total volunteers who assist with daily park operations. Seasonal opportunities are available to both single and couples who can dedicate 20 hours/week of services in return for full-hookup on-site camping at designated locations. Four types of volunteer positions are available including: Volunteer Village: Total of 10 volunteer host sites. Located in a closed section of Amity Campground on the Alabama side of the lake. Volunteers are required to work 20 hours/week. Beach Host: Three beach areas (Rocky Point, Earl Cook and Yellowjacket Park) having two host sites per park at the entrance. Volunteers are required to work a 24 hour, four day on/off rotation from May September. Winter Sitter: Seasonal off-season position that is needed in the three Day-Use Parks listed above and three campgrounds (Whitetail Ridge, Holiday, Amity Campgrounds only). Volunteers are responsible for monitor the parks activities daily and reporting any vandalism or water leaks during cold weather. Volunteers average 6 hours/week but may perform other tasks as needed. Campground Winter Host; R. Shaefer Heard Campground is the only campground that remains open during the winters season with 54 campsites available for occupancy during this time. Two host sites are located at the entrance of the campground. Volunteers are required to work a 24 hour, seven day on/off rotation from October March. Stateline: Located in a permanently closed campground in an area called Old Stateline Road. Volunteers are responsible for monitoring activities in this park acting as a Winter Sitter all season. Volunteers are required to work a minimum of 20 hours/week and are assigned tasks to assist in the Project Management Office and park operations as needed.
