From Vipiteno on you will find a milder climate, a lovelier landscape and some ascent will be done by cable car or bus. Along the route you will find comfortable accommodations. A week of delightful mountain biking, the traditional Bavarian culture, Tyrolean hospitality and the Italian way of life awaits you. Characteristics of the route The route from Tegernsee over the Zillertal to Lake Garda leads along easy and middle difficult paths. Climbs can be shortened partly by using cable cars or a shuttle. The tour is suitable for everyone with a good physical condition. For nearly every day we offer a more moderate route. Day 1: Arrival in Kreuth am Tegernsee Lake Tegernsee, just one hour south of Munich, is the perfect starting point for a cycling tour going southwards. Depending on your arrival time you can enjoy a walk along the lake in Tegernsee or Rottach- Egern. Day 2: Kreuth am Tegernsee Mayrhofen (approx. 80 km / ascent: approx. 640 m difference in altitude) From lake Tegernsee the tour starts over the Alps. You will cycle along the river Weissach and then uphill over the 941 m high Achenpass, which lies shortly before the Austrian border. In Tyrol you follow the way through the Achental and along the 10 km long lake Achen, lying idyllically between the Rofan mountains and Karwendel. From Jenbach you cycle through the Valley of the Inn, traversing river Inn and slightly ascending through the Zillertal to Mayrhofen. Day 3: Mayrhofen - Sterzing/Vipiteno (approx. 65 km / ascent: approx. 1,730 m difference in altitude) The highlight of traversing the main ridge of the Alps can be done in 2 different ways: The sporty ones start cycling directly in Mayrhofen: at the beginning along the river Ziller, before ascending to Schlegeis-Stausee. The route is partly asphalted, but you will find also small bits of gravel paths which won t be a problem for trained cyclists. Be prepared to carry your bike for some parts of the path, because the path might be blocked every now and then. In Ginzling you will reach the gate to the nature park Zillertal. Who turns right at the tollbooth will cycle on a narrow trail where the bike has to be carried sometimes before returning to the turnpike. Before reaching the huge Schlegeis wall you have to deal with 8 turns and 4 tunnels. Alternative route: (approx. 45 km / ascent: approx. 560 m difference in altitude) After the breakfast a shuttlebus will take you and your bikes to the Schlegeis-Stausee (artificial lake), one of the most beautiful Austrian lakes. From here you will deal with 500 m difference in altitude on alpine terrain, but you will be rewarded with breath taking views over the glaciers of the Zillertal. Shortly after the Italian border you arrive at the Pfitscher- Joch-Haus and 1,300 m difference in altitude downhill. Destination of the day is Vipiteno this picturesque town is on the list of the Borghi più belli d Italia (the most beautiful villages of Italy). the marvellous view over the mountains of Pfunders and the Alps of the Zillertal. A short downhill ride over Spinga, a village belonging to Rio di Pusteria, follows. This small village Spinga became famous due to the battle of Spinga on April, 2nd 1797, when the Inntaler Schützen (shooters) and the residents of the Wipptal together with the wench Katharina Lanz beat the army of Napoleon. You will continue to Sciaves and along the river Eisack to Bressanone, where you will spend the night. Alternative route: (approx. 33 km / ascent: approx. 125 m difference in altitude): Just in the beginning you will have a short uphill ride, then moderately downhill with a few risings. You cycle along the valley Eisacktal and reach after approx. 20 km Fortezza, a solid fortress from the 19th century built from the Habsburg to protect South Tyrol. Temperatures become milder now and you will see the first tendrils. Finally you reach Bressanone visit the historic centre with its flower clock! Day 5: Brixen/Bressanone Bozen/Bolzano (approx. 64 km / ascent: approx. 1,290 m difference in altitude) After a longer ascent to Sant` Andrea above Bressanone the cable car will take you to the top of Bressanone`s local mountain Plose. Enjoy the panoramic view over the whole Eisacktal, before daring the downhill ride to Funes valley with a view over the famous Geisler mountain group. The next uphill ride is waiting for you before you will reach Laion (famous for being the native town of the minnesinger Walther von der Vogelweide) and cycle back to the valley. Continue cycling on the cycling path, partly on an ancient railway track and therefore sometimes leading through short tunnels, to Bolzano South Tyrol s capital city where the Tyrolean traditions meet Italian mentality. Bolzano itself has much to offer, the arcades, the lawns by the river, a visit to the Ice Man in the Archaeological Museum or sitting and drinking a coffee in one of the many cafes in the town. Alternative route: (approx. 42 km / ascent: approx. 290 m difference in altitude) Starting in Bressanone, you follow the Eisacktal cycling path alongside the river Eisack and cycle through the many vineyards which mainly produce white wine, past the picturesque town of Chiusa which is worth stopping to look at, and onto the capital town of Bolzano. Bolzano itself has much to offer, the arcades, the lawns by the river, a visit to the Ice Man in the Archaeological Museum or sitting and drinking a coffee in one of the many cafes in town. Day 4: Sterzing/Vipiteno Brixen/Bressanone (approx. 48 km / ascent: approx. 1,280 m difference in altitude) Today you will cycle comfortably along the Eisacktal cycling path passing castle Welfenstein to Mules. Now a longer ascent to the Valser Joch starts. Enjoy
Day 6: Bozen/Bolzano-Trento (approx. 84 km / ascent: approx. 1,100 m difference in altitude) The day starts with a cable car ride up to Kohlern, Bolzano`s local mountain, the green lungs of the city and protected landscape since several years. Enjoy a last view over Bolzano before you continue your tour direction south to Nova Ponente, on the high plateau Regglsberg. You will pass the famous place of pilgrimage and convent Maria Weißenstein, visited by Pope Johannes Paul II in 1988, and you will follow the way on the tracks of the old Fassa valley railway. A short downhill ride will take you back to the Etsch valley reaching Ora. From here you cycle along the Etsch cycling path to Trento. Enjoy the evening experiencing the Italian way of life on the Piazza of the Dome with a glass of wine. Alternative route: (approx. 73 km / ascent: approx. 270 m difference in altitude) Shortly after Bolzano you reach castle Sigmundskron, where Reinhold Messner has one of his mountain museums. A visit is highly recommended, but very time-consuming! A slight ascent running parallel to the South Tyrolean wine road takes you to the Lake Kalterer See. It s the warmest lake in the Alps and can reach a temperature of 28. Follow the Etschtal and enjoy the view over vineyards and fruit plantations. Visit Termeno sulla Strada del Vino here is where the famous Gewürztraminer is cultivated. Day 7: Trento - Riva del Garda/Torbole (approx. 67 km / ascent: approx. 1,970 m difference in altitude or approx. 62 km / cable car + 1,590 m difference in altitude) You have reached the last stage of the tour! A powerful uphill ride takes you to Sardagna and further on over the pass road of Monte Bondone. If wanted the uphill ride to Sardagna can be overcome, by taking the cable car (ticket not included). Further steep bits will follow and finally a downhill ride takes you to Lago di Lagolo, and then to your final destination: Lake Garda! Along the lake you will get to Riva del Garda. In the evening enjoy the Italian dolce fare niente on the Piazza. Alternative route: (approx. 40-50 km / ascent: approx. 270 m difference in altitude) This easy stage can be done for 75% on cycling paths. After 50 km, mostly without steep bits, you reach your final destination: Lake Garda! In Rovereto you may visit the pretty historic centre. You will continue along the Biotop Lago di Loppi. Before arriving, you have to deal with the lowest pass of the Alps: the 200 m high Passo San Giovanni. Once you have reached Nago you will be riding downhill until you reach picturesque Torbole, the first village on Lake Garda.
