Interspersed among the bucolic grounds are eight functioning 18th and 19th century buildings, including the 1794 Morey-Devereaux House and Barn, a working blacksmith s shop (1850s), a small community church (1853) and a one-room schoolhouse (1852). In 2017, awarded a Legends & Lore marker by the New York Folklore Society & William G. Pomeroy Foundation honoring Washington Irving s Sleepy Hollow character Ichabod Crane, who was patterned after the original Kinderhook schoolteacher hence the schoolhouse name. The schoolhouse was originally located at the corner of Rt. 9H and Fischer Rd.; it was moved to the Luykas Van Alen house property in 1974 after the Kinderhook school district centralized, and restored to its 1930s appearance. Her country estate, Steepletop, was both a social gathering spot for Millay s friends writers, musicians, and others and a peaceful place where nature inspired her creative spirit. Today you can take a guided tour of her home, meander through her grounds and gardens, or walk the Poetry Trail a 1/2 mile wooded trail marked with a dozen favorite nature poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay ending at the final resting ground of the poet and her family.
