3rd Plenary Session of the ICPDR - November 2000 - The implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive is considered having the highest priority for the ICPDR. The ICPDR will provide the platform for the coordination necessary to develop and establish the River Basin Management Plan for the Danube River Basin. The Contracting Parties ensure to make all efforts to arrive at a coordinated international River Basin Management Plan for the Danube River Basin.
The WFD and the Danube The EU Water Framework Directive requires a river basin management plan at the basin level by 2009 ICPDR responsible for developing the DRB RBM plan (this includes the Sava Basin) The ICPDR RBM Expert Group is established a timetable for carrying out this task from 2002 to 2009 The UNDP-DRP assisting the ICPDR

Objectives of a Sava River Basin Pilot Activity Phase 1 (2002-2003) Develop a work programme for the Sava river basin planning exercise in line with WFD Phase 2 (2004-2006)Engage in the development of the pilot Sava RBM plan
Phase 1 activities Establish a preparatory group of ICPDR RBM EG members from Sava countries Define specific tasks and time frame for phase 1 of the project; Develop detailed TOR and work programme for pilot RBM plan in Sava RB (phase 2)
First Preparatory Meeting, Oct. 2002 clarify the tasks and activities to be carried out in Phase 1 discuss national contributions, identify the requirements of international consultant, outline the TOR and the work plan.
Expected Results of Sava Pilot RBM Activity Input into process of development of Danube River Basin Management Plan; Testing of the EU Water Framework Directive in the Sava Basin; Support implementation of the DRPC; Strengthen Cooperation in the 4 Sava RBM countries.
In Closing... The UNDP/GEF DRP hopes that the development of the pilot RBM plan for the Sava River Basin will help the Sava Initiative to meet its environmental goals.
