Dear Carleton Alumni and Friends: Every ten years, amid the storybook landscapes of the Bavarian Alps, the residents of the quaint hamlet of Oberammergau stage one of the world s greatest dramatic spectacles, an extravagant Passion play with a cast of thousands and a history that encompasses nearly four centuries. Join this momentous journey to experience the pomp and majesty of the 41st production of the Passion Play of Oberammergau, coupled with a delightful cruise aboard the deluxe M.S. AMADEUS SYMPHONY through the heart of Europe along the fabled Danube River. Our customized itinerary combines this historic cultural event with the unrivaled legacy of art, architecture and history that recalls the glories of the mighty Holy Roman and Habsburg empires. By exclusive arrangement, special tickets and seating not available to the general public have been procured to ensure your full enjoyment of this magnificent performance, in which some 2,000 citizens of Oberammergau portray the story of Jesus Christ on the large, open-air stage of the Passionsspielhaus (Passion Play Theater). During your cruise, revel in the beauty of the Austrian countryside as you pass pristine storybook villages and medieval castles. There are opportunities to visit the treasures of extraordinary Budapest, the imperial Vienna of Maria Theresa and Franz Josef, the impressive Benedictine Melk Abbey and the architectural riches of Bratislava and Passau This unique travel opportunity represents exceptional value and, with limited capacity, is certain to sell out quickly, so we urge you to make your reservation before September 29, 2009, while Early Booking Savings are still available. This evening, join your traveling companions for the Captain s welcome toast before dinner. BUDAPEST Day 3 For centuries, the twin cities of Buda and Pest have faced each other across the Danube River. When the Habsburg Archduke Joseph, son of Emperor Leopold II, became Palatine of Budapest in 1796, he undertook a building program on an unprecedented scale. By the time this most Hungarian Habsburg died in 1847, Budapest rivaled Vienna as an imperial capital of the first rank. Pass through Heroes Square and admire its monuments to the Magyar chiefs who conquered Hungary in A.D. 896. Cross the imposing Chain Bridge linking the low-lying Pest side to the hillier Buda side of the Danube. On Castle Hill, visit the Gothic Matthias Church, built in the 1200s, and the neo-romanesque Fishermen s Bastion, which commands a panoramic view of the city. Depart Budapest early this afternoon, commencing your Danube River cruise. Walk through romantic Passau, a city whose picturesque setting and Baroque architecture lend themselves to a leisurely riverside stroll. BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA/ VIENNA, AUSTRIA Day 4 Dock in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains overlooking the banks of the Danube. Beautifully restored since the end of the Cold War, the city seamlessly blends its 1,000-year-old history with the cutting-edge dynamism of one of the most rapidly changing cities in Europe. During this morning s optional walking tour of the Old Town, see some of the finest medieval, Renaissance and 19th-century architecture in central Europe. Admire the grand Romanesque 14th-century Cathedral of St. Martin and see the 14th-century St. Michael s Gate, the only remaining portion of the city s original fortifications. Visit the elaborate Primatial Palace and marvel at the beauty of the magnificent Slovak National Theatre. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon cruising the Danube River to Vienna. VIENNA Day 5 Seat of the Habsburg Empire and a virtual open-air museum of Baroque architecture, Vienna owes its present appearance to the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Josef. He demolished the city s defense walls in order to create the Ringstrasse. There is free time in Vienna, or you have the opportunity to view some of the city s finest landmarks the Austrian National Opera, the Parliament, the Hofburg Palace Imperial Apartments,

The afternoon is at leisure, or join the optional excursion to Schönbrunn Palace, the impressive summer estate of the Habsburgs. Admire its priceless collections of art and antiques, and learn more about the Austrian Empire and its distinguished rulers. MELK Day 6 Melk Abbey glows in golden hues from the top of a high granite bluff above a bend of the Danube River. The original Benedictine monastery dates from 1089. Pursue independent interests in the nearby village of Emmersdorf, or set off for the optional tour of the abbey, noting the intricate Baroque decor of its marble hall, spiral staircase and library, known for its extensive collection of medieval manuscripts and volumes. A TRADITION LIKE NO OTHER: THE PASSION PLAY OF OBERAMMERGAU One day nearly 400 years ago, as the heartland of Europe was brought to its knees by the twin horrors of the Thirty Years War and the Black Death, the ruling council of Oberammergau made a desperate attempt to safeguard their hamlet against the plague. No one from outside the village boundaries would be allowed to enter, not even residents returning from their day s work. The decree protected the village for some time, but an exiled day laborer eventually slipped back home and brought the plague with him. The residents of Oberammergau sought deliverance from the spreading pestilence by performing a modest Passion play on a simple stage built over the graves of plague victims. Spared further ravages of the plague, surviving villagers made a solemn vow to reenact the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ every ten years in perpetuity as an act of thanks and remembrance. Through the centuries, the play rose in prestige as it drew pilgrims from across Europe and attracted Germany s greatest poets to compose its scripts. Today, 376 years later, the tradition lives on, respected throughout Europe and across the globe as the world s most historic and spectacular Passion play. Performed on one of the world s largest stages, the extravagant Passionsspielhaus, the play now features a cast of nearly 2,000 village residents who transform themselves from Bavarian farmers and townsfolk into a dazzling array of Roman centurions, Jewish villagers and characters from the world s most famous story of death and rebirth. A spectacle like no other, this stirring dramatic experience draws spectators from around the world and is without peer in the scale of its pomp and pageantry as well as the universal theme of its story.
