Issue No. 326 / January February 2014 A Royal Christening Year of the Horse Native Orchids Romance AAE 1914: Homeward Bound

Dear Collectors Welcome to the first edition of the Australian Stamp Bulletin for 2014 and a range of stamp issues from what promises to be a very diverse program. We are also excited about a first for Australia Post with the release of a digitally printed silk minisheet for the Christmas Island Lunar New Year stamp issue. Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic Australia Post All applications for the reproduction of Australian stamps or any correspondence should be made in writing to: Manager Philatelic Australia Post GPO Box 1777 MELBOURNE VIC 3001 mailorder@auspost.com.au To begin, we will recap on an event which took place in October with the release of Australia s first royal christening stamp issue. We decided to hold back on the release of this special issue as the design needed to use images that were not immediately available. January also introduces the seventh sign in the current cycle of the popular Christmas Island Lunar New Year series and the recipients of the 2014 Australia Post Legends Award. Each year, secrecy surrounds the recipients, but for 2014 we announced the subject area early. Cooking is such an integral part of everyday life we thought it appropriate to recognise those that have helped shape our communal palate. A burst of colour and floral grandeur is presented in two new stamp issues Native Orchids and Romance. With the extensive range of species in the orchid family it is difficult to select just a few. Each of the four species selected have subtle differences. It would be hard to find a gardener without an appreciation for the beauty of the rose. And what better symbol of romance. The issue of two stamps presents the ever-popular flower and a graphic design of hearts. The remaining issue in this edition covers an Australian exploration hero and the final stamp issue in the four-year series covering the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911 14. Homeward Bound looks at the return of the surviving expedition party members. A highlight of this last issue in the series is the combined sheetlet presentation pack.

Prince George was christened in the silver-gilt Lily Font which was made in 1840 for Queen Victoria s first child, Princess Victoria and wore the replica of the 172-yearold Royal Christening Robe. Water from the Jordan River, where Christ was baptised by John the Baptist was used and two anthems were performed by the choir of Her Majesty s Chapel Royal. Guests included George s greatparents, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, his grandfather the Prince of Wales, his uncle Prince Harry, and the immediate family of the Duchess of Cambridge. Among the seven god-parents were Zara Tindall, a cousin to the Duke of Cambridge, and personal friends, including those of the Duke s mother Diana, Princess of Wales. A series of official photographs was taken after the ceremony by photographer Jason Bell, one of which is used for the stamp design. Taken in the Morning Room of Clarence House, another photo shows the three future kings of the United Kingdom, together with the current monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

January February 2014 9 Australian Legends of Cooking For nearly two decades the Australia Post Australian Legends Award has been one of the stamp issues to usher in the stamp program for the new calendar year, coinciding with January s Australia Day celebrations. In 2014, this annual award will recognise a select group of gamechangers in Australia s food culture. These individuals have been extraordinary for their part in shaping Australia s palate and placing it on the international map of gastronomy. For the first time since the award was established, public opinion has had a bearing on the selection of the Legends. Thousands of Australians participated by voting for their favourite movers and shakers in the scene, the shortlist compiled by an expert panel. The Australian Legends of Cooking will be announced on 17 January 2014. Issue date: 17 January 2014 Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games Sheetlet $6 The Opening Ceremony for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games is scheduled to take place on 7 February in Sochi, Russia, and Australia is expected to field a team of between 50 and 55 athletes. Sochi is situated on the coast of the Black Sea, near the border between Russia and Georgia, with the majestic Caucasus Mountains to the north. Australia Post will celebrate any gold medal win by our competing athletes with the release of a Gold Medallists sheetlet of stamps. Distributed in most countries, they are prolific in tropical regions. Australia has around 1,300 orchid species, with 95 per cent of these not found anywhere else in the world. Orchids are either terrestrial, having an underground root system, or epiphytic, where they grow on host trees for support. A subset of epiphytic orchids is the lithophytic orchid, which grows on exposed rocks. Golden Rock Orchid Dockrillia striolata ssp. Chrysantha Also called the Streaked Rock Orchid, this lithophytic species is found in south-eastern Australia. The subspecies chrysantha is endemic to Tasmania, and has fragrant, creamy yellow flowers. Tasmania has about 210 species of native orchids. Bee Orchid Caladenia discoidea This terrestrial orchid, also called the Dancing Spider Orchid, is endemic to Western Australia. The name means club-bearing and refers to the broad, flat, deeply fringed labellum. Orange Blossom Orchid Sarcochilus falcatus The scent and shape of this orchid s flowers are similar to orange blossoms. It is distributed throughout eastern Australia up to Cape York Peninsula. Shirt Orchid Thelymitra campanulata Also called the Bell Sun Orchid, this orchid is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. Two distinctive features have contributed to its common names: the small flowers often have a bell-shaped appearance, and the fine striping on petals and sepals.

January February 2014 11 Many orchids make very good house plants. They are prized for their stunning appearance, low maintenance needs and are functionally decorative. 1795002 First day cover (gummed) $2.70 1795241 Gutter $6 1795254 Booklet of 10 x 60c $6 1795255 Booklet of 20 x 60c $12 1795220 Maxicards $5.40 1795126 Stamp pack $2.85
