CONTENTS WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE EUROPEAN ATHLETICS PRESIDENT I am extremely pleased that Albufeira will host the 2010 SPAR European Cross Country Championships. A European Athletics delegation recently visited this sun-blessed city in the Algarve region in preparation for the event and visited the fantastic Cross Country course. Early preparations are going well in Albufeira and I look forward to a memorable 17th edition of the championships. Portugal has some excellent Cross Country runners who may well star in Albufeira. Cross Country running is very popular in the country and this should make sure interest among fans is strong in December 2010. Indeed, the discipline of Cross Country is growing to be an ever more important part of athletics during the winter months. Cross Country brings together athletes from the middle distances up to the Marathon in the same race and provides a special challenge as the running surface can change according to the weather conditions. The SPAR European Cross Country Championships are always an exciting and interesting competition, with the added dimension of also being a team event. The combination of the beauty of the local Albufeira environment and the natural obstacles on the course will provide a memorable experience for athletes, officials and fans alike. I would like to thank in advance the Portuguese Athletics Federation, the Albufeira 2010 Local Organising Committee and the City Hall in Albufeira for their hard work now and in the future with regards to the organisation of the championships. I hope that Albufeira 2010 continues the success story of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships and I look forward to meeting Europe s Cross Country family in December 2010 in Portugal. Since early times it has been considered an excellent destination for fantastic holidays. This area, located right in the heart of Algarve, boasts a coastal belt of exceptional scenery, a countryside where the picturesque landscape and hospitality remain unspoilt and an urban strip where the varied nightlife is full of surprises and original shows. Surrounded by good access routes, Albufeira is a mere 20 minutes drive from Faro Airport and the transport network provides rapid access to other parts of the country. The opening of both the Fishing Harbour and the Marina has turned the sea into another gateway for departures and arrivals, making Albufeira one of the most cosmopolitan settings in the Mediterranean Area. Landscape The coastal belt boasts a refreshing array of colours from the blues and greens of the sea and the white of the sands to the accented gold of the cliffs covered in lush greens where golfers practise their sport whilst enjoying the scenic backdrop. The urban strip, full of bars, restaurants and shops has retained its original architecture to a large degree with vestiges of what remained from the Arab period. The countryside is dotted with extensive groves of oranges, figs, almonds and carobs. Modern architecture also has its place with ample shopping centres, regeneration zones and buildings that reflect the contemporary craftsmanship of internationally renowned architects. Gastronomy From the sea to the table and from the land for dessert is the motto of restaurants renowned for the freshness of their varied array of fish and shellfish and their culinary knowledge passed from generation to generation using fresh produce from the land, particularly the traditional confectionary based on eggs and dried fruits. The long fishing tradition means that Albufeira gastronomy is regarded as some of healthiest around, always associated with the purity of olive oil and the use of herbs and spices that lend the dishes a unique and unforgettable flavour. The advent of summer sees various gastronomic festivals being hosted with the Guia Barbecued Chicken Festival and the Olhos d Água Grilled Sardines Festival as the highlights. The sheer transparency of daylight reveals the superb scenery around Albufeira, which enjoys an exceptional climate, free from traces of pollution, given its proximity to the Mediterranean and the North of Africa. Summer dawns like the colour of oranges and dusk paints the sky a sun-blazoned red, with the fun-filled evenings remaining blue and hot well into the night. The white winter mornings are followed by golden afternoons and the moonlit sky is always full of stars. Agreeable temperatures can be enjoyed 365 days per year. 4 17 5 th SPAR European Cross Country Championships - Albufeira2010
THE CITY OF ALBUFEIRA ARRIVAL TO ALBUFEIRA Entertainment Throughout the year, Albufeira hosts various shows of either a cultural, sporting or a scientific nature. Every month the residents receive a programme of events so they can mark off the days of their choice. Albufeira provides its visitors and residents alike with folklore, arts and crafts, erudite music, concerts by contemporary groups, theatre, various cinema halls, literature and a never-ending list of sporting events, in addition to permanent plastic art exhibitions and venues where the more curious can explore scientific displays. The annual New Years Eve programme is now a significant event on the national festive season calendar. Diverse and quality tourist attractions The hotel facilities in Albufeira are continually being awarded more stars and strive unfailingly to find innovative ways to keep their guests well satisfied. There are numerous golf courses as well as aquatic theme parks, the best-known being Zoomarine, and various other attractions that equally delight children. Sport Albufeira has all the necessary conditions to actively promote sporting tourism. There are excellent facilities for practising various sports and the city has been the birthplace of many athletes including those who have excelled in world championships events ranging from deep-sea fishing to athletics, tennis, motorcycling and many others. Our initiatives include building sports complexes, sponsoring clubs and associations dedicated to sport, organising tournaments and events on an national and international scale (such as the Tour of Portugal in Cycling, the International Boxing Gala and International Tennis, Golf and Jet Ski Tournaments). The tourists are not forgotten and in this regard we host sporting events and dances on the beach and in gymnasiums specially equipped for that purpose. The hotel establishments regularly host teams from all over the world for training and relaxation stopovers by athletes. Whilst Albufeira is recognised today as a tourism capital due to its rich gastronomy, scenery and traditions, it will be known as such no less in the future due to the excellent sporting events it promotes. Albufeira, like the rest of the Algarve, is served by a good network of transport connections, both internally to other Portuguese cities, and externally to other countries around the world. Where air transport is concerned, Albufeira is just 32km away from Faro International Airport, from and into which a number of national and international airlines operate regularly, making the region an ideal choice from which to catch connecting flights or to start or end a journey. The municipality is also served by an excellent road network and the railway from Lisbon is another option to travel to the region. Map Traditions The cultural traditions of Albufeira have been vigilantly preserved throughout time. There has always been an earnest preservation of original customs and rituals, from handicrafts to religious expressions, in such a way that these cultural traditions provide a true reflection of the roots of Albufeira. These roots are reflected in fishing and festive songs found in folklore, in vocal tradition sessions, in the original harvestgathering dances, in particularly women s dressmaking and in the worshipping of the saints of protection that still attracts thousands of loyal followers in flower-filled processions of faith. By plane The organisation of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships 2010 will provide transportation for all accredited people arriving at Faro International Airport. Faro International Airport has daily flights to and from the major cities in Europe and the world. It is located 32 km from the motorway that connects Faro to Albufeira.
