Chairman s Message Dear Fellow Members, We have just held our 29th AGM on Sunday 2 July. Allow me to recap some of the key points that I shared with the members present. Twelve months have indeed passed very quickly. Our Management Committee has worked hard, and made progress in many areas, but we still have to continue to work very hard in some of the areas. Kudos to our subcommittee members, convenors and Club staff for their unflinching and steadfast efforts. Community Engagement As the Club continues to be more inclusive and engaged with the wider community, I thanked members for their generous outright donations to the Singapore Children s Society last year. Our current donation drive for SportCares (which reaches out to underprivileged and disabled young people through sporting activities) is in progress. We commend our members to give generously to SportCares, following the example of our Patron, Mr Abdullah Tarmugi, who was the first person to donate to this charity drive. Land Lease Extension We have worked painstakingly to engage with Sport Singapore (official lessee of the Club) to have them extend our lease. Besides meeting the needs of the members, the club also worked actively to include the larger community such as schools, community clubs, and non-profit welfare organisations. We are indebted to Sport Singapore, whose support is crucial. And while we have not as yet received an offer for the lease extension, we are hopeful. Whether we are ultimately offered a lease extension of 10 years or even longer, and at what price, it will require careful consideration on our part as to how we may finance any lease extension. Facilities Upkeep & Maintenance The Club is being painted to re-fresh and upgrade the facilities. Painting work guided by our in-house architect, Mr Alan Fan (House & Grounds Chairman), is being done by our own maintenance staff to keep costs down. The last major Renovation work was done more than 10 years ago and some facilities require repair, replacement and / or upgrading. In view of this, and in anticipation of our land lease renewal, conceptual drawings of possible improved access and upgraded facilities were displayed during the AGM. Financial Position Income from jackpot, room sales, corporate events, and membership subscriptions have been declining for past 3 years. This clearly is unsustainable. Income from all streams must be increased while expenditures need to be reduced. As such, the MC have reviewed subscription rates (which were last raised 13 years ago, in 2004). We have taken the difficult decision to raise members monthly subscription rates by $20 per month, with effect from 1 August 2017. Older members rates will be raised less (see page 05). Members will also receive 1 night complimentary Superior Room accommodation per year, free usage of the gym, free usage of bath towels and free wifi. Despite the increase, CBC s monthly subscription rates will still be the lowest among all private members clubs in Singapore. The energetic efforts of our Hon Secretary Mr Vincent Ho have helped greatly helped to bring back vibrancy to the Deck Bar. New bands and the addition of new events on a regular basis have seen sales up by about 50 percent compared over previous year. These efforts have drawn in a wider crowd and boost the revenue of the club. Thank you for your continued support. Club Chairman, Steven Yuen

04 club happenings 29 th Annual General Meeting The AGM was held on Sunday 2 July 2017. The meeting was convened at 3.00pm by the Honorary Secretary Mr Vincent Ho. However, as there were insufficient members registered, a short recess was called. When the meeting was re-convened at 3.30pm, 41 members had registered, fulfilling the quorum requirement. The meeting commenced with Club Chairman Mr Steven Yuen s opening address thanking members for their support for the events over the last year. He highlighted several issues including the Club s efforts in community engagement, our charity fund-raising efforts in support of The Children s Society last year, and SportCares currently, updates on the land lease renewal, the Club s financial position, and on Club facilities maintenance and upkeep issues. The Honorary Treasurer Mr Stanley Foo then reviewed the Club s finances with the meeting. He explained the declining revenues of the Club were due to jackpot (which has halved over the past 5 years), membership subscriptions (which have declined due to resignations and fewer new members are joining pending the renewal of the land lease), and room rentals and event bookings (as fewer members and corporates rent facilities as they tighten their budgets and our rooms await renovation). He explained that while our overall expenditures had remained steady, the reduced income meant that we ended FY16/17 with an operating deficit of $105,341 after deducting expenditures and subsidies for activities. His presentation was followed by a lively discussion with members fielding a range of questions, including the Club s income, expenditure, staffing, plans and budget for the next year, and the rental fees for the interim lease of the land. The main concern of the various speakers was that Club income needed to increase while keeping our expenditures well under control. The meeting then approved the Auditors Report and Financial Statements, and also approved the re-appointment of McMillan Woods as auditors for fiscal year 2017/18. 02 01 Management Committee & General Manager 02 Management Committee & members mingling during break time 03 Displays of some possible future facilities upgrading options 04 Social Chairman speaking with members 01

club happenings 05 03 04 This was followed by a short tea break during which members were able to view several concept drawings of possible improvements to Club facilities. When the meeting reconvened, Mr Stanley Foo informed that members monthly subscription fees would be raised with effect from 1 August 2017. He highlighted that the last increase to the present $55 monthly was 13 years ago in 2004. He explained that monthly subscriptions would rise by $20 in most categories to $75 for Ordinary Family members, $65 for Ordinary Individual members, $65 for Veteran members, $15 for Junior members, $15 for Absent members, and $90 for Term members. In addition, there will be concessions given to present members who are aged 65 and above (as at 1 Aug 2017) - $15 increase for members 65-69 years old, a $10 increase for members 70-75 years old, and No Increase for members above 75 years of age. This increase in monthly subscriptions is estimated to raise up to $500,000 in 12 months, and would significantly improve the Club s finances. Even then, CBC would remain the most affordable members club in Singapore. In return, members will receive 1 night complimentary Superior Room accommodation per year, free usage of the gym, free usage of bath towels and free wifi. Members present were generally accepting of the MC s decision to increase subscription fees, and requested that the rationale and benefits be clearly explained to members.

06 club happenings As no letters were written to the Honorary Secretary, the Chairman opened to the floor for any last remarks. Two members expressed their thanks to the MC for their efforts this past year, acknowledging that the work of managing the Club has been challenging. Two MC members also highlighted the aging demographic profile of the Club that is few of those present for the AGM were aged below 50, and few had children who were actively involved in the Club. This implied that younger people did not see the Club as relevant to their needs / lifestyles. They asked members present to reflect on this, and to try to encourage their adult children to use the Club facilities, to participate in Club events, to bring their friends, and to be involved in sub-committees to make activities more relevant to their own peer group. The Chairman concluded the meeting with thanks to all members present for their participation, and to staff for their hard work. 05 06 08 07 09 05-09 Lively AGM discussion as members ask questions and offer feedback to MC

club happenings 09 sports 27 May 2017 Tennis Friendly with NUSS Our CBC-NUSS Tennis Friendly saw a total of 43 tennis players comprising 25 players from CBC and 18 players from NUSS. While the visiting team NUSS had younger players, our members put up a good fight. Sadly, youth triumphed over experience, with NUSS taking the honours by a score of 21-7. The event ended over light snacks and refreshments served by Cranwell Roadhouse Café.

10 club happenings sports 03 04 Jun 2017 Interclub Friendly Golf with Palm Springs @ Batam Our Club held the first Golf Friendly of the new season at Palm Springs Golf & Country Club, Batam. We had a strong turnout with 20 members and 3 guests representing our Club. On Day One, participants had the opportunity to play a warm-up game at the challenging Palm / Island course. The day ended with a sumptuous barbeque seafood dinner by the beach, which was proudly hosted by Palm Springs Golf & Country Club. After dinner, we were pampered with accommodation at the luxurious Best Western Hotel. The tournament was played on Day Two in a spirit of friendly competition, with prizes contributed by Palm Springs.

club happenings 11 sports 09 Jul 2017 Parc Lumiere Fun Bowl The Residents Committee of Parc Lumiere estate in Simei held a get together session at our Club. Their Bingo Bowl provided a wonderful time for 35 neighbours to mingle and enjoy each others company. The event was graced by Ms Jessica Tan Soon Neo, Member of Parliment for East Coast GRC.

12 club happenings 01 social 02 06 May 2017 Bukit Timah Nature Reserve Walk The trail up Bukit Timah Hill twisted and turned, and it got tougher as we progressed. The trail was unexpectedly tough with slippery logs and uneven rocks to negotiate. It got steeper as we ascended, with the final steps to the top being the hardest. Thankfully under overcast skies, the intermittent drizzle cooled our straining bodies. And we had great company as we encouraged and helped one another climb. When we reached the summit, there was no small sense of elation and achievement. After a short rest and time out for photographs, we began the descent via the Dairy Farm trail. All in all, a good work out in nature, and a very enjoyable outing. club happenings 13 social 20 May 2017 Kelong Getaway 01 My husband and I enjoyed the Kelong Getaway very much. It was an unusual holiday for us. The food was delicious and so there was too much to eat! We had exciting experiences such as fishing and going to a nearby island for a refreshing swim. We actually were able to catch some fish. We had to wait patiently for quite a while for the fishes to take the bait. But when we caught them, we felt the waiting was worth it. The trip to the nearby island was also fun. We swam, kayaked and also watched the sunset together. Though we felt tired at the end of a long day, it was time well spent. Overall, we really had a great time during this well-organized trip! 02 04 Rosalind Leong 03 05 The Kelong Getaway was a really great trip. Good service, good food and good company. What else could we ask for? The fishing was great and I managed to catch a few! We also went to a nearby island to swim, kayak and watch the sunset. The water activities were really fun and we had a great time together. The sunset was also awesome. I can t wait to go there again with my friends.
