Absaroka Mountain Lodge s own mountain man. This owner-operated and family oriented business is a profitable and strategically located guest ranch operation which offers flexible stays in uniquely decorated cabins; along with a variety of outdoor activities and full service restaurant meals. The guest ranch takes its name Absaroka from the Crow Indian word for home place. The area is home to several types of trout and numerous species of wildlife, most notably grizzly bear, black bear, elk, deer, Big Horn sheep, moose, and bison. The Lodge is located on the banks of Gunbarrel Creek as it cascades through the valley creating picturesque vistas and providing excellent trout fishing. Operation of Lodge The current guest season at Absaroka Mountain Lodge is nearly five months long, running from the third week of May until the third week of September. The peak of the guest season is from about June 10th until August 25th of each year; with the off-season occurring during the weeks before and after the peak dates. Absaroka Mountain Lodge can accommodate 65 guests when totally full. Occupancy during the peak season is typically close to 100%, because any late cancellations during this time are usually quickly filled by drop-in customers. The occupancy rate during the off-season historically averages about 55% to 60%. The guest season could be expanded by accommodating hunters in the fall and skiers from nearby Sleeping Giant Ski Area in the winter. Absaroka Mountain Lodge operates under a 20-year operating lease through a Special Use Permit from the United States Forest Service. Prospective buyers will be required to complete a Financial Ability Determination package and submit it to the U.S. Forest Service along with business references, financial information, and a business plan. Upon approval by the U. S. Forest Service, a Special Use Permit will be issued to the new owner and the operating lease will be reset to a full 20 year term. The complex occupies a footprint of approximately 7 acres. No real property is included in this offering. There is an area in the main lodge set up for a bar; however, because the current owners emphasize a family atmosphere, they do not have a liquor license and utilize the area as a family game/video room. The Sellers do not currently guide or outfit hunters. However, with the abundant amount of game in the area and the superb access to National Forest land, a hunt outfitting business could easily be incorporated into the operation of Absaroka Mountain Lodge. The North Fork of the Shoshone River valley provides a perfect setting for the Absaroka Mountain Lodge guest ranch operation. Formed from the volcanic upheaval of the Yellowstone Caldera, the North Fork of the Shoshone River has its headwaters in the Absaroka Range of the Shoshone National Forest, and flows northeasterly through the valley to Cody, and then on to a confluence with the Bighorn River near Lovell. Originally the river was known as the Stinking Water River because it flows through a region of volcanically active fumaroles known as Colter s Hell. The valley formed by the North Fork of the Shoshone River is home to abundant wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and endless recreational opportunities. History The Absaroka Mountain Lodge was one of the first guest ranches to be built in the valley along the North Fork of the Shoshone River. It was established on the beautiful Shoshone National Forest by Earl F. Crouch in 1917 under the original name of Gunbarrel Lodge, and was included on the National Register of Historic Places in October of 2003. Successive owners through the years have done an excellent job of maintaining and updating the buildings and guest ranch operation, in order to continue to provide visitors an enjoyable western experience. One of these previous owners was Freddy Garlow (Buffalo Bill Cody s grandson), who owned the guest ranch from 1952 until the early 1970 s. The Shoshone National Forest was originally set aside as the Yellowstone Forest Reserve in 1891, during the presidency of Benjamin Harrison. This followed the establishment in 1872 of Yellowstone National Park as the first national park in the United States. This reserve was enlarged in 1902 by President Theodore Roosevelt, and divided into four divisions which were re-designated as National Forests in 1907. Legend has it that Theodore Roosevelt stayed in what is now Cabin 18 during one of his many hunting trips to the region.
