Hatari Lodge is located in the midst of the lush and green environment of the Meru Ecosystem, in which mosses grow on trees in the mountain rain forest and Colobus Monkeys playfully swing themselves from branch to branch. Shu mata Camp sits right on top of a hill in the midst of the steppe that belongs to the dry and dusty Amboseli Ecosystem with its shrubs, Acacia trees and old Amboseli tuskers, facing the Seven Sisters and Mount Kilimanjaro. Realizing how close to each other these two ecosystems lie only one and a half hours drive from each other! we understood how amazing it would be to combine the two locations into one single safari circuit with three to seven nights at Hatari Lodge and Shu mata Camp. And while doing so, we also became aware that many visitors never even get a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro, whereas on our circuit, it is impossible not to see this old giant volcano, and the traveler even gets different views of it hence the KILIMANJARO Safari Circuit!

The itinerary Momella a sleepy village at the foot of old Mount Meru, Where buffalo and giraffe Eat their way through thicket every day. Hatari a place of harmony with nature, Where peace and silence reign Against the glowing background of the rising sun. We wake up in a cozy room, Take a hot shower in the morning, Sit down for breakfast on the terrace, And in the company of giraffe Enjoy a cup of coffee and an omelet; Then get into a jeep, begin our way Through forests, lush and green, But later dusty roads, The voices of exotic birds, a snake That slips in silence from the branch Of an Acacia tree. The tracks of elephant, until we face A huge old tusker while Mongoose hurry through the sand. Majestically rises The snow-capped top of Africa s lone giant, Kilimanjaro plunged in orange-mauve. Sitting around a warming fire, We listen to the tales of times long past, Enjoying culinary pleasures, Retreat into a comfortable tent, Hyena laughing us into sound sleep.

The Hatari Lodge The Hatari experience A luxury lodge amidst the wonders of nature. Modern designs from African craftsmen fibreglass furniture and walls decorated in Retro Style. (Architektur & Wohnen, 005)

The Lodge is situated at the northern edge of Arusha National Park the long forgotten secret in the heart of Tanzania. Measuring roughly 300 square kilometers it combines within its boundaries the vast variety of many other parks in northern Tanzania: crater, lakes, savannah, plains and Africa s 4 th highest mountain! Now a luxury bush hotel, the lodge consists of three buildings beautifully situated in acacia woodland allowing breathtaking views onto the Momella meadow, rich with wildlife and across to the majestic Kilimanjaro. Hatari offers nine comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open fireplace and a spacious bathroom. Every room has been lovingly furnished and decorated in a modern retro style, paying tribute to the 60 s and 70 s the era of Hatari! This lodge is breathtaking! Everything from the rooms, to the views, to the staff, to the service, to the setting and of course the extremely local wildlife! I am not sure I will ever experience a place as personal, welcoming and memorable as the Hatari Lodge. I hope we were as good of guests as you were hosts! I look forward to returning someday. Carrie, 07/03/006

Hatari Activities (Our suggestions depending on the length of your stay) Momella Lakes Half day activity We visit the Momella Lakes (in Arusha National Park) - seven volcanic lakes embedded in breathtaking scenery. Flamingos are spreading their wings and soaring gracefully into the open sky above hippos and giraffes. Bushbuck, Dikdik and warthogs may shyly glimpse from behind tall grass, carefully checking out the vast savannah. At Boma la Megi, if the weather allows, you may get a most spectacular view of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru at the same time. Canoe Safari on Little Momella Lake and Historical Tour Full day activity We explore the areas surrounding Momella Lodge and pay a visit to the hippo pool in which Elsa Martinelli used to bathe. Then we continue and have a look at the house of the Trappe family as well as the grave of the white huntress, Margarete Trappe, who was even respected among London s Gentlemen s Clubs! We return to Hatari Lodge and enjoy our lunch on the Kilimanjaro Terrace. After lunch, we continue to Little Momella Lake for a canoeing safari. At close range, you will see birds and various other kinds of wildlife, while a few hippos puff and blow in the distance. We return to Hatari for a sundowner on our wildlife walkway, where the experiences of the day can be shared with other guests. The canoeing safari as well as the historical tour can also each be booked separately as a half-day activity.

The Hatari activities (Our suggestions depending on the length of your stay) Mt Meru Crater Tour Full day activity Though often ignored in favor of its bigger sister Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a worthy trekker s paradise. This massive volcano endured a violent explosion at an estimated 00 million years ago, and in its wake the explosion left towering cliffs in a gaping U-shaped ridge facing east towards Kilimanjaro. Its craggy top lies at the westernmost point of the summit ridge at 4566 m. What makes this trek truly special is the chance to see animals on foot. The lower section, which we reach with an open topped safari jeep, runs into the forest on the Meru crater floor with many large, potentially dangerous game animals about. An armed ranger comes along on this trek for safety. On the way up, one passes through 3 different vegetation zones, starting from savannah, through forest and into dense jungle, reminiscent of landscapes in the movie Lord of the Rings. Upon reaching Kitoto view point, altitude 500m, our armed ranger provides an escort on the final hike up and into the crater floor. This takes a couple of hours. We return to the vehicle and head downhill to a spot next to a picturesque waterfall where a traditional picnic lunch replenishes burnt energy amidst spectacular views of rolling plains with Mt. Kilimanjaro looming in the background. Further down, another short walk leads to the Tululisia Waterfall, cascading down and soaking those who venture too close to it. We return to Hatari exhausted but in time for afternoon coffee and cake or sundowner! Ngurdoto Crater Tour Full day activity This is an extraordinary game drive through Arusha National Park to Ngurdoto Crater and Rock viewpoint. You will have a great view on the Mt. Meru rock formations. Inside the park s little Ngorongoro Crater, Ngurdoto, buffalo, warthog and giraffes regularly come to graze, occasionally even elephants. The drive to the crater is followed by a picnic at the legendary viewpoint once frequented by Margarete Trappe, later also Hardy Krüger and Jim Mallory. The trip continues to Ngongongare Springs at the heart of the national park, followed by a game drive crossing little Serengeti and Mgoda Pass. We return to Hatari Lodge in time for our afternoon tea.

The Hatari activities (Our suggestions depending on the length of your stay) Ngurdoto Crater Hike Full Day Activity And that's how it happened, at night, in total darkness. They were sleeping nearby the fire on the ground holding each other softly. The first thing he heard was the rattle of Saida and first he thought she was speaking to him while dreaming. Then there was this breath over his face and this pain when fingerlong fangs cutted into his neck and his face. And then his lower jaw broke. Just for a glimpse he had open his eyes and saw something huge and black with amber-coloured eyes.... The story tells about the legendary Gurumico, who according to the Meru and Maasai roams the Ngurdoto Crater. But do not fear, there will be a ranger to accompany our tour. Since the Margarete Trappe era no human was allowed to walk in the crater. Hatari Lodge is now granted a trial period to enter the crater floor with our guests on foot. The legend of Gurumico is just one out of many fairytales about the Ngurdoto Crater. Margarete Trappe, known as the white hunter and owner of the Trappe farm once discovered the crater while she was following the tracks of an obviously huge elephant bull. When she saw him and his impressive figure she could not shoot him and was therefore rewarded with the sudden appearance of Ngurdoto Crater. After breakfast we drive to the crater to meet our ranger. We descent down the slopes onto the crater floor on foot where we find a unique jungle landscape. Leaving the rain forest wide open meadows arrange themselves in front of our eyes. We come across islands of huge papyrus in lakes hiding buffaloes and warthogs. And with a bit of luck we might get a glimpse of Babu, a massive elephant bull who enjoys his retirement on the crater floor. *Please note there is an additional USD 50 per person for this exclusive hiking tour!

The Hatari activities (Our suggestions depending on the length of your stay) Momella Foundation Half day activity Come walk with us to the neighbouring Meru village of Momella and experience Tanzanian rural life. On the way, we will visit Hardy Krueger s old meat factory and the area surrounding Momella Lodge. The walk will also help you understand what our Momella Foundation is all about and what are its first achievements. The Foundation has a big task, and is attacking poverty at its roots. For the Momella Foundation the principal goal is sustainability, and goes far beyond mere social consciousness. The foundation focuses on educational development, conservation, sustainable agronomy and women empowerment. Have a look at our Watoto Momella Preschool. 5 children are teached according to the principles of Maria Montessori. You may also visit our Momella Forest Garden Project and discuss about permaculture and the philosophy of gardening. At our Mama Momella tailor's studio you get an impression of our modern african fashion which is manufactured by local women to enhance their economic independence.

How to get there Transfer: HATARI LODGE The transfer to Hatari Lodge can be made on own arrangements, but it is also possible to book it with Hatari Lodge. Shu mata Camp In Maijo s language, Maa, Shu mata means something like above the clouds or heaven. To me, this luxurious refuge, made up of a handful of living tents in Hemingway style, is a piece of the very magic of which East Africa is made. Shu mata is not a real national park, not folklore commercialized, not even a real hotel. It is a small but amazing permanent camp on a hill in the midst of original Maasailand. It is an unforgettable place, even if not memorized on photographs. Welt Online, 9/0/0, Michael Hegenauer

The Camp is located at the foot of Kilimanjaro, deep in Maasai land, in an area known as South Amboseli. Large East African tents, in true Hemingway style, line on a hill from which magnificent views lead in all directions. At the front of the camp bush savanna melts into the slopes of Kilimanjaro, towering above into the blue skies of Africa. So close that on a moonlit night details of the glaciers can be visible. Seasonally the surrounding savannah bush teems with wildlife large herds of elephant, eland, zebra and wildebeest and Oryx as well as Grants and Thompson Gazelle. Six comfortable safari tents in the true Hemingway style. All with en-suite bathrooms, toilet, shower in colourful decorations of Maasai Art. Each tent has its own veranda with up-lifting views. Outside, under the great African sky the open fireplace adds a true feeling of adventure and safari romance. A Hemingway whiskey blends in perfectly with the sounds of crickets, barking zebra and the distant roar of a lion.

Shu mata Activities Maasai Naturalist Walk Halfday Activity On this tour the Maasai will show us their wide knowledge of herbs and medicines, unique lifestyle and land, where they are living since several centuries in spite of the long dry seasons. Experience and get an insight on their daily lifestyle, which is off the beaten track! In the late afternoon you will come back to the camp, where a sundowner on the hill is waiting for you. Here you can enjoy beautiful views across the wide open savannah. Maasai Boma Visit Halfday Activity From our Shu mata Camp, we organize a visit to a maasai boma. Boma is the traditional homestead of the maasai people, who are semi-nomadic. The women build their traditional huts, made of a wooden structure, into which a mix of clay and cow dung is plastered as walls, which is covered by natural roofing materials such as straw. These huts give into weather conditions and have to be rebuilt every six years on average. The Maasai are mainly cattle herders, but don t usually eat meat on a daily basis. Instead, they drink milk in large amounts and occasionally supplement their diet with fresh blood obtained by making a small cut into the animal s throat without killing it. An interesting excursion awaits you to a maasai boma in the Sinya flat. Here you will get a very good insight In the daily life and tradition of the maasai. Later in the afternoon you will enjoy a wonderful sundowner at a very nice place in the middle of the maasai steppe.

Shu mata Activities Amboseli Sinya Tour This barren land, scattered with islands of old acacia forests and seasonal swamps flank the pans of the 'embosel' ecosystem which stretches to the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is this region, away from the busy tourism areas of northern Tanzania, where the elder elephants retreat to live out their final years in peace and harmony and away from the madding crowds. On foot with Maasai warriors or in open top game drive vehicles we get within arms reach of Africa's largest mammals. Timeless moments. Sensing the great peace and beauty of these magnificent creatures and calmly sharing the habitat with the Maasai and their cattle, a true original part of Africa. Activities (depending on season): As a half-day trip (mostly during summer): Early in the morning, set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed breakfast, which you will have out in the bush. Later on had back to the camp for lunch. As a full-day trip (mostly during winter): With this tour you are out in the bush for the whole day. After a nice breakfast at the camp set out for a game drive to southern Amboseli with a wonderful packed lunch, which you will have out in the bush. Continue the game drive and in the early evening had back to the camp for dinner and overnight. Alternatively you may have a full day game drive to the western region of Kilimanjaro National Park or to Longido. Night Game Drive During the day the diversity of species is very high here in the maasai steppe. A lot of wild animals live here and you can see them in the wild. But when you get the chance to do a night game drive, you should take the chance, in the night different animals are on their way through the bush. After the sunset you will go in the jeep for a night game drive. You get the possibility to see wild animals and take amazing pictures at close range. Return to the camp for late dinner and enjoy a relaxing glass of wine of your choice.

Shu mata Activities Kilimanjaro For All a hike on the Shira Plateau Full Day Activity We start at our Shu'mata Camp with an open topped vehicle and drive scenicely for about,5 hours up to 3,400m onto the Shira Plateau. We pass different climate and vegetation zones. We leave the wide open steppe and enter flowering green highlands at the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park and finally reach alpine landscapes. Our destination is the Shira Plateau at 4000m. Once the cloud curtain opens, a fascinating view of the nearby Kibo Peak of Kilimanjaro is staged. We hike the Shira Day Trail for 3 hours through heath and moor with especially large senecios (up to 0 meters high). Elands can often be seen on the plateau, and you may see signs of buffaloes, leopards and other animals. En route we enjoy a lunch picnic while looking over the plains of Shira and Africa's highest mountain. We return for coffee and cake at a dutch farm which also supplies all vegetables for HatariLodge and Shu'mata Camp. Afterwards we drive back to Shu'mata just in time for our sundowner. *Please note there are additional costs for this activity.

Shu mata Activities Lion Guardians Tour Halfday Activity Shu'mata Camp together with the Lion GuardiansProject in Kenya have partnered in this great initiative to help protect the lions and other cats in the Maasailand as well as educate the local people on the importance of protecting these carnivores. After breakfast, we drive to the Kenyan boarder where we will meet with one of the Lion Guardians who will then take us to the areas where we will be able to track the lions and possibly find one or a pride. Return back to the camp for lunch and afterwards an educational talk by the Lion Guardian on the successes and challenges of the Lion Guardian Project. *For this activity we charge extra costs. This money goes directly to the Big Cat Guardians Project. Shu'mata in depth Maasai Experience During two days you may enjoy an authentic Maasai Experience which provides a deep insight into traditional lifestyle of these semi - nomadic people. In cooperation with people - to - people safaris under the guidance of Ole Sululu we offer a Maasai naturalist walk and an authentic Maasai goat barbeque. You may accompany the Lion Guardians on their daily lion tracking walk and last but not least you will be welcomed at a Maasai boma. *For this activity we charge extra costs.
