It was originally founded in 1601 by Nguyen Hoang, governor of Thuan Hoa province. The 21m-high octagonal tower, Thap Phuoc Duyen, was constructed under the reign of Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844. Hue Imperial Citadel which was begun in 1804 by Emperor Gia Long (the first Nguyen emperor) on a site chosen by geomancers. The Royal Citadel sustained heavy damage during the war and many of its majestic buildings were destroyed, however, since being recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, considerable restoration has been carried out to recover its overall magnificence; it is a fascinating place to explore.
