Page 4 Take a waddle on the wild side to one of Australia s most popular wildlife attractions. Address Summerlands Opening hours Penguins arrive at sunset every day. Visitor centre open 10am every day (2pm on Christmas Day). Overview The Summerland Peninsula in the south-west of Phillip Island is home to an estimated 32 000 little penguins one of the largest colonies in Australia. The represents approximately 10 per cent of the colony. Each night at sunset, little penguins (numbering in the hundreds or thousands depending on the season) make the march across the beach and return to their burrow homes in the sand dunes. Revenue raised through tourism activities is invested into conservation activities to protect the whole colony. Quick facts. Little penguins are the smallest of the 17 penguin species and the only penguin that lives permanently in Australia. 1920s first tourists visited the. 1955 State Government established a large reserve over the penguin colony. 1966 a Little Penguin Scientific Advisory Committee was formed and little penguin counts and research programs begun. 1985 the Victorian Government initiated a land buy back of a housing estate located within the colony and brought back all 175 homes and blocks by 2010. 1996 Phillip Island Nature Parks established. Present day Phillip Island Nature Parks continues to manage the Summerland Peninsula and conduct conservation programs and research to ensure the protection of the penguin colony. Overview Churchill Island is an important place to local Aboriginal people and was the site of Victoria s first crops and European building in 1801. Environment koalas Page 10 Protect, discover, learn Environment Wildlife and habitat protection. We manage 1,805 hectares of Crown Land on Phillip Island (approximately 20 per cent of the island). Our conservation projects include revegetation, habitat restoration, eradication of feral animals and weeds and the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured wildlife. Habitat within Phillip Island Nature Parks supports significant populations of little penguins, hooded plovers, short-tailed shearwaters and other international migratory bird species, and mammals such as koalas, possums, wallabies, Australian fur seals and bats. The Nature Parks protects a range of plant communities that include over 330 native species. Sections of the Nature Parks also fall within or are adjacent to wetlands protected under the inter-governmental Ramsar Convention as wetlands of international importance. Research Discovering more about Phillip Island s unique wildlife. Research is vital to our conservation work. We have a world leading team of scientists undertaking ground breaking research on little penguins, coastal birds, seals and other mammals. Their work is vital to helping us protect our unique wildlife and habitat for future generations. Education Inspiring tomorrow s environmental leaders. We run over a 164 different education programs for both domestic and international markets of all ages. Ecotourism We re dedicated to quality ecotourism experiences and wildlife management and feature the highest number of Advanced Ecotourism accredited types of tours of any tourism operator in Victoria. In 2012 we also attained ROC (Respecting Our Culture) accreditation an industry standard that encourages tourism businesses to operate with respect for Indigenous cultural heritage. The Nature Parks has a diverse environment comprised of wetlands, woodlands and breathtaking coastlines which are protected and managed by our world-renowned environmental and research programs.
