OVERVIEW DEVON 50 HISTORY AND CONCEOT Devon 50, a Pennsylvania troop from Devon, PA, built a cabin on a plot of land now Camp Jarvis in the early 1900s that they rent out to visiting troops throughout the year. This has been a tradition with Troop 189 for well over 10 years. Much scouting history from the Valley Forge area is on the walls of their cabin. They have a wood-burning stove for heat and a kitchenette to prep meals. There is electricity and in the past we have brought a projector and laptop for an evening movie. There will be two hikes on Saturday. The first and second year scouts will hike the historical Valley Forge area and the third year and beyond scouts will hike Philadelphia. Go to this link for more information and pictures: http://lists.devon50.org/rentjarvis/rentjarvis.htm SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Tuesday, 21 November: Commitment deadline Tuesday, 28 November: Permission slips due Tuesday, 05 December: Grub fee due Friday, 08 December Before, 5:30pm: Dinner on your own or with car team at a House along I-95 4:47pm: Sunset 5:30pm: Linkup 6:00pm: Depart Pattie (three-hour trip) 9:00pm: Arrive (914 North Valley Forge Road, Devon, PA 19333) 9:30pm: Cracker Barrel and Program Review 10:00pm: Lights out Saturday, 09 December 7:11am: Sunrise 7:30am: Breakfast 8:15am: Philly hikers depart (30 min drive 23 mi from Camp Jarvis) arrive 8:45am 8:30am: Valley Forge (VF) Hikers depart (4.1 mi from Camp Jarvis 15-20 minute drive) arrive 8:45am 9:00am: Start VF Historic Film at Visitors Center MUST BE AT THE FIRST SHOWING it is cold in the theater at 9:00am. TRANSPORTATION This drive takes approx 3hrs and approx $25 round trip in tolls. This is not reimbursable via troop funds (Travel expenses may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax professional). Passengers will be expected to pay the driver their share of gas and tolls. The below math assumes 4 passengers. https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2011/03/03/tax-time/). Refer to appendix 2 for directions. BASE CAMP AND HIKES Our base camp at Devon 50 is approx 15 min away from our hiking event at Valley Forge National Park and 40 min away the city of Philadelphia. VALLEY FORGE HIKE All scouts going on this campout the first and second years will take part in a 10-mile or more hike through historic Valley Forge using map and compass. The first year hikers will learn navigation skills along the way while experiencing immersion in the history of General George Washington s Continental Army. With a question and answer booklet filled out, each scout can earn a cool medal to be worn on their scout sash. The normal method is to have a contingent of at least two adults drive the group down and back returning to the cabin by 6:00pm or so. This group is the one that the grubmaster (both adult and scout) is picked from - this ensures a timely meal. All scouts going on this campout for the second year will lead this 10-mile hike through the battlefield. This gives them practice with navigation and teaching it, and exercises their leadership skills among their peers, as well perhaps the most valuable of lessons this weekend. PHILLY HIKE NO KNIVES. Any scout who attends this campout for a 3rd time or more, will have the option of going on a 7-mile hike through the city of Philadelphia. This, too, will entail immersion in historic sites and learning cultural history and pop history, not to mention some great eats. The normal method is to have a contingent of at least two adults drive the group down and back returning to the cabin by 7:00pm or so. This trip does require the scout to bring funds for food and entry into select attractions as these are not provided by the troop. NO KNIVES.
