Newsletter December 2013 Vol 4 To our members, volunteers, supporters and friends, may we wish you all a very.. A Christmas message NOW HERE S A THOUGHT FOR CHRISTMAS According to reindeer experts, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer cast their antlers after the rutting season, usually by late November to mid- December. Female reindeer retain their antlers over the winter in order to compete with other females for food for their offspring and do not cast them till spring. All of the reindeer pulling Santa's sleigh, therefore, from Rudolph to Blitzen, have to be girls! and a happy and healthy New Year The AWB committee of Bola Bakare, Kathleen McVay, Les Cesek, Alasdair Morrison, Rob Nolan and Stan Stewart send you all our good wishes for the festive season. 2013 was a good year for AWB and with your help 2014 will be even better.

TOYS FOR SMILES The first load of Toys for Smiles arrived in Amman on 25 th November and the UNHCR will shortly be distributing the toys to nurseries, play groups and children s centres in the Zaatari Syrian refugee camp in Northern Jordan. For Phase 1 of the project the toys were collected by the Royal Junior School, Hindhead, the Scouts and Guides, Berkshire, and the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, who also boxed all the toys. Gist Ltd, the UK wide transport company, kindly transported the toys to Heathrow and the load was air freighted by TFA Logistics and Distribution of Colnbrook. The International Society of Transport Aircraft Trading (ISTAT) Foundation very generously awarded a substantial grant to AWB to fund the air cargo costs of the project and a big thank you goes to them and to all who helped. The chairman of the Humanitarian Committee of the ISTAT Foundation, Julian Baalam (left), is shown formally presenting the cheque to AWB. Phase 2 of the UK wide collection of toys by the Scout and Guide Fellowship and air cargo shipments to Amman by AWB will be continued from January to February and Phase 3, March to April 2014. RELIEF SUPPLIES FOR THE PHILIPPINES AWB was requested by Chain of Hope to ship relief supplies to communities in the Philippines affected by Typhoon Haiyan for the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral of St George in Stevenage. In preparation for shipment boxes were packed at the Coptic Church Centre with food donated by members of the congregation and medical supplies donated by St Thomas Hospital, London. Our Dutch friends at LZG offered to assist and the load was dispatched by road from Stevenage to Amsterdam. On the day of arrival at Schiphol Airport, Wednesday 11 th December, the cargo was loaded onto flight KL807 and flown free by KLM to the Philippines. The next day it arrived safely in Manila where the supplies were cleared though customs and distributed to communities in need. A big thank you goes to all who helped but in particular to LZG for their assistance and to KLM for very generously providing free transportation to Manila

AGM On Saturday 30 th November AWB s 2013 AGM was held at the Hilton Hotel, Heathrow and the Hilton very kindly donated a room with drinks and biscuits for our use. A lively and interesting meeting ensued and five of the standing trustees, Bola Bakare, Kathleen McVay, Les Cesek, Alasdair Morrison, and Stan Stewart were re-elected. Rob Nolan was elected as a new trustee. Josh Macgregor stood down as a trustee and was thanked for his contribution. If you would like to give us a helping hand over the coming year your assistance will be most welcome. KIGALI EXCESS BAGGAGE WAIVED The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre (MSKCC) in New York is a world leading cancer research institute and they are presently helping the Rwandan Government set up a paediatric cancer ward in Kigali. The project is run on a limited budget and Dr Trippett, who leads the team, carries as many medical supplies as she can in her excess baggage when she visits Kigali to assist. Dr Trippett planned to depart from New York with Brussels Airlines via Brussels to Kigali on December 4 th with 5 suitcases of mostly medical supplies, two cases within the airline allowance and three excess. The only problem was the cost and AWB was asked to assist. Our colleagues in ASF Belgium (ASF-B) have had an association with Brussels Airlines for many years and by co-incidence a visit to Brussels had been planned to discuss an aircraft project with Christian of ASF-B (centre) and Jos (right) of our Dutch friends LZG. AWB asked if ASF-B could assist and the result was that all the charges on the excess baggage were waived. A big thank you goes to ASF Belgium for their help and also to Brussels Airlines for very kindly waiving the costs.

LYDIA S SUCCESSFUL OPERATION IN GHANA Medicine on the Move is a wonderful charity run by Captain Yaw whose name is well known in Ghana. Capt Yaw (aka Jonathan Porter) and his team work to improve the health of the nation by organising mostly women to teach hygiene in rural areas. The women employed, however, are not just trained as health workers but also train as aircraft mechanics and pilots. So not only do they teach hygiene in remote areas but they fly themselves there in ultra light aircraft and maintain the machines as well. What an amazing organisation! One young lady, Lydia, was keen to be accepted but had a damaged arm. In October she travelled to Germany for an operation and is now convalescing back in Ghana. When she recovers she hopes to start training. AWB was very pleased to help by funding her return airfare to Germany and we wish her a speedy recovery and a successful future with Medicine on the Move. TWO FINAL FESTIVE THOUGHTS Give someone a hug this Christmas...and leave the car at home.
