LiveLink - July This edition of LiveLink includes the latest trends in Australian live export trade statistics and prices. Please note that all export data over the past nine months may later be revised. To subscribe to this report or if you have any queries, please email marketinfo@mla.com.au. Historical live export data can be downloaded from MLA s public database - http://statistics.mla.com.au/. For the 2016-17 fiscal year, feeder and slaughter cattle exports were just below 802,000, a 27 decline year-on-year. For the calendar year-to- feeder and slaughter cattle exports are back 38, compared with the same period last year, totalling 346,000. Total cattle exports to Indonesia over the fiscal year totalled 525,000, down 7.5 year-on-year. However, for the calendar year-to-date feeder and slaughter cattle exports were recorded at 220,000, 29 below year-ago volumes. Shipments to Indonesia continue to be impacted by the presence of Indian Buffalo Meat (IBM) across Indonesia. IBM continues to challenge Australian live cattle exports, at a time of reduced availability and high domestic prices. Looking a, the potential implications of the 5:1 breeder policy could further inhibit importers desire to purchase feeder and slaughter cattle from Australia. Current wet market prices for IBM in the Greater Jakarta area continue to vary and range from IDR 80,000-110,000/kg, while fresh beef trades at a premium from IDR 115,000-120,000/kg. The most recent month and, at times, second most recent month trade data comes from DAWR. This data is then updated when ABS data is released. * In October 2015, the ABS did not disclose feeder and slaughter cattle trade data to Vietnam, China and Japan. For this month, individual country shipments have been estimated by MLA. In addition, trade data by individual port was also not disclosed in October 2015 this data is aggregated under Unknown port. ** DAWR does not report on individual ports. Port data is updated when released by the ABS. All pricing data is collected by Meat and Livestock Australia from a range of sources. LiveLink - July For the 2016-17 fiscal year, sheep exports totalled 1,850,000, a decline of 1 year-on-year. Januaryto- sheep exports were also back 1, at 822,500, with demand from a number of Middle Eastern countries supporting the stability in sheep exports this year. The government in Bahrain opted to remove subsidies on imported Australian live sheep early last year, and the live trade has now entirely ceased. However, much of this decline has been absorbed by Qatar. Sheep exports to Qatar totalled 603,000, a lift of 28 comparable to the previous financial year. Demand in Qatar is being driven by preparations for the 2022 Soccer World Cup; a significant numbers of expatriate laborers from the sub-continent are working on large construction projects across the country and, hence, growing demand for imported product. > Want to subscribe to the monthly LiveLink report?
