BRIEF HISTORY OF MARSEILLE Facts about Marseille With its twenty-six century long experience of exchange, experience and dialogue with the peoples of the world, Marseille is now opening out to emerging countries without neglecting the age-old ties that bind it to the Mediterranean basin. Building on its potential for innovation, research and development and a population of young and qualified people, it benefits from all of the necessary conditions to ensure the success of companies within an attractive cultural and living environment. The city is deeply marked by its past and is constantly digging up the remains of all the cities that have been built on top of each other over the centuries. It takes the visitor on a journey that begins with its Greek and Roman origins and leads us past the medieval religious foundations, the 16th Century fortifications, the rich homes of the 17th and 18th Centuries and the many prestigious buildings erected in the 19th Century and right up to modern times and the great architectural achievements of the 21st Century. In achieving the title European Capital of Culture for 2013, Marseille has established itself as a cultural destination. Beyond culture, Marseille is wagering on its natural environment enhanced by the Calanques National Park and, in another field all together, on the hosting of major international cultural, economic and sporting events, for which it has gained experience in recent years from the World Football or Rugby Cups to the 6th World Water Forum. Marseille enjoys a unique geostrategic position within Europe: As the first port of France and the Mediterranean and the third largest port in the world for the oil trade, the Phocean City is the established bridgehead of Europe within the Mediterranean. As the second diplomatic seat in France, Marseille has successfully played the hand of international relations, making its mark as a recognised para-diplomatic centre. A status that has resulted in the presence of numerous international organisations (Marseille Center for Mediterranean Integration, UNIDO, World Water Council, World Bank antenna ). Over the past fifteen years or so, the urban renewal led by Marseille has been indisputable.. TEGoVA Meeting. Marseille 26-28 October 2017. 3
