Dear Collectors Welcome to the first edition of Stamp Bulletin Australia for 2013. We include a special introduction to Australia 2013 World Stamp Show, which is fast approaching. I urge collectors planning to attend Melbourne in May to keep up with the event highlights and the special souvenir range available by regularly visiting the Australia 2013 website. You will also find useful links to other Victorian and Melbourne attractions, events and resources, including accommodation and public transport options. We start off the year celebrating the Lunar New Year (LNY) Year of the Snake. The LNY issue includes a special sheetlet and PNC. The stamp pack, when used together with one of the prepaid envelopes from the issue, is a perfect LNY greeting card. The Australian Legends Award program continues, with an issue that will delight most Australians. Make sure you visit your local Australia Post retail outlet or the Australia Post website after the announcement to see who the Legends for 2013 are. The stamp issue will be released 18 January 2013. In February we celebrate history and surf culture in Australia and the 50th anniversary of the sports peak body, Surfing Australia. Many Australians, having grown up within easy access to a beach, will have identified with the surf scene at one point or another in their lives. The four stamp designs and the associated products capture moments in surfing s past and present. We also bring you a new issue of stamps ideally suited for those special occasions, where a more specific stamp design is called for. The Greetings stamp issue will also be available for use with the Personalised Stamps service. The introduction of these new designs is part of an ongoing commitment by Australia Post to meet the needs of our general, social, and business mail customers. Top Dogs, a se-tenant issue of stamps, features five fourlegged friends, set for a lifetime of loyalty or of mischievous play. These delightful little canines appear to be right at home on this special issue. This edition also brings further news and results of the stamp poll 2012. Happy collecting Michael Zsolt Manager, Philatelic

12 February 2013 Surfing Australia 60c Beach beauties 60c 60s surfing 60c Surf pilgrimage 60c Pro surfing 1762142 Minisheet Issue highlights A limited edition postal and numismatic cover accompanies this issue. Surfing is such a cornerstone of Australian leisure that it is difficult to imagine a time at which it did not exist. At the dawn of the 20th century, surf bathing was prohibited during daylight hours, surfboards were unknown and the unpatrolled ocean was feared by most. A little over a century later, surfing is one of our most popular leisure pursuits, our champions are among the best in the world, and the fashion and culture of the sport are dominant not just along the coastline but also across the country. For many, surfing has become shorthand for what it means to be Australian. It accommodates both our irreverent, laidback sensibility and our dynamic sporting prowess. In 2013, Surfing Australia, the governing body of the sport, celebrates 50 years of promoting surfing as quintessentially Australian and steering its professional recognition. Marking the anniversary of Surfing Australia, this stamp issue embraces surfing culture and history since its popularity surged in the 1950s. 1762360 PNC (limited edition 15,000) 1762182 Booklet (s/a) (10 x 60c) 10

Through their imagery, typography and look, the stamps express an historical arc from the 1950s to the current day. 1762184 Prestige booklet Technical details Issue date 12 February 2013 FDI withdrawal date 13 March 2013 Denomination Stamp design 4 x 60c Andrew Hoyne Design Product design Jo Muré Australia Post Design Studio Printer McKellar Renown Paper (s/a) Tullis Russell (c90,c100 s/a) Printing process Lithography Stamp size 37.5mm x 26mm Perforations 13.86 x 14.6 Sheet layout Module of 50 (with design in the gutter) National postmark Torquay, Vic 3228 1762013 First day cover (minisheet) 11

19 February 2013 Top Dogs 60c Miniature Schnauzer 60c Miniature Dachshund 60c Pug 60c Australian Terrier 60c Cavalier King Charles Spaniel First Day of Issue 19 February 2013 W Mount Barker WA 6324 Did you know that around 12 million Australians, comprising 63 per cent of households own a pet and 38 per cent of these households have at least one dog? We are a nation of dog lovers and this issue will appeal to the owners of popular small dog breeds. Issue highlights Self-adhesive booklets of 10 are available for each of the featured breeds and also as a collection. The Miniature Schnauzer originated as a farm dog in Germany in the 19th century. A cross between a standard Schnauzer and smaller breeds such as the Poodle and Affenpinscher, the breed comes in four colours: black, salt-and-pepper, blackand-silver, and white. Playful and spirited, yet friendly and intelligent, Miniature Schnauzers make excellent watchdogs. The Miniature Dachshund is a hound dog, probably bred in Germany in the 18th century to hunt burrow-dwelling animals. Long-bodied, with big front paws designed for efficient digging, dachshunds can be long, smooth or wire-haired 16 Technical details Issue date 19 February 2013 FDI withdrawal date 20 March 2013 Denomination 5 x 60c Stamp design Susan Elliott Photography Craig McGill Product design Jo Mure Australia Post Design Studio Printer McKellar Renown Paper (s/a) Tullis Russell (C100 s/a) Printing process Lithography Stamp size 26mm x 37.5mm Perforations 14.6 x 13.86 Sheet layout Module of 50 (with design) National postmark Mount Barker, WA 6324 1763002 First day cover

Top Dogs 19 February 2013 1763126 Stamp pack and come in a range of colours. They are loyal and obstinate and sometimes stand-offish with strangers. 1763400 Booklet Collection The Pug originated as a lap dog in the royal courts of ancient China. The breed was imported to Europe in the 16th century, where it became a favourite with the House of Orange, and soon became popular throughout Europe. Queen Victoria owned many Pugs. These dogs tend to be quiet and docile and are good family pets. Descended from British rough coast-type terriers brought to Australia in the 19th century, the Australian Terrier was first recognised as a distinct breed in 1850. Coat colours are shades of blue or red. The breed standard describes the Australian Terrier as spirited and alert, with the natural aggressiveness of a ratter and hedge hunter. Bred as a toy dog, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was popular among the nobility in 16th century England, where it was used as a lap warmer for ladies. It was said of King Charles II that his Majesty was seldom seen without his little dogs and the breed has since been identified with this monarch. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are affectionate, playful and socialise well with children and other dogs. 1763254 Booklet s/a (10 x 60c) 1763256 Booktlet s/a (10 x 60c) 1763253 Booklet s/a (10 x 60c) 1763258 Booktlet s/a (10 x 60c) 17
