Plan now for 2011 and be at the convention President Bob Congdon Greetings Rotarians, Message from the President PRACTICES AND CUSTOMS Undertaking the task of changing the culture of an organization is a major project and can only be implemented from the very top. In the case of Rotary International this would mean the support and involvement of the President of RI and because of its size would probably take three to five years to complete. It is important for us to appreciate that we are not seeking to change the culture of Rotary International. We are simply looking at our current practices (principally at dinner meetings) and whether changes are needed to make the format more relevant to the present and in particular the potential members we seek to attract. Gerry now has feedback from almost all members which seems to be pointing towards a clear preference for change. Recommendations regarding the nature and extent of these changes will, in due course, be presented to the club by Gerry and his team VISIT TO DONATIONS IN KIND- TONIGHT, WEDNESDAY 10 TH NOVEMBER I first heard of this organization when club members were invited to assist in removing lab equipment and furniture from a building which was about to be demolished at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Henry and I spent a very hot Saturday with other volunteers removing all manner of equipment from the building and loading it into trucks for shipment to the site at Edinburgh. Tonight we will be visiting DIK. It will be very interesting to discover how this material is processed and to where it is sent. If you need directions to the site contact Paul Cavell on 0414 997 305 2010-11 MEMBERSHIP TARGET Our committed target is to have 35 active members by the 31 st. of March 2011. At this stage Alan and Scott have a list of suspects which they are working towards converting to prospects. Scott and Alan would welcome more leads. In particular we are looking for young professionals who are working and or living in the Eastern CBD precinct. PUBLIC RELATIONS Geoff Schahinger and I met yesterday with Rex Jory ( a recent guest speaker) to discuss how we might elevate the club s public image. A number of good suggestions came out of this discussion and also an offer to help us with press release copy. The important point which Rex made however was that good newsworthy material only arises through actual events and happenings which are different, topical, and thought provoking.

Where did Piss Poor come from? Interesting History They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & Sold to the tannery...if you had to do this to survive you were "Piss Poor" But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn't even afford to buy a pot...they "didn't have a pot to piss in" & were the lowest of the low Message from the President (cont.) FUND RAISING - FINE WINES Scott Mason, purveyor of fine wines reports that he has ordered a just over a pallet of selected wines ( un-encumbered by labeling ). Scott expects that this wine will be ready for collection sometime next week. Paul Cavell s Tawny Port Raffle is almost sold out. Please help Paul close this raffle this week. YOURS IN ROTARY, PRESIDENT BOB. The Four Way Test Of the things we think, say or do 1 Is it the Truth? YOUTH REPORT (submitted by George SInclaire) Anastasia Zacharia will be attending the Science Experience at Adelaide University in mid January. She was our only applicant this year. Jade Chantrell is getting very excited about her trip to Canberra to attend the National Youth Science Forum also in January. UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER. DENTON Greg- 30 th November 2 Is it Fair to all concerned? 3 Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? 4 Will it be Beneficial to all concerned? As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world - that is the myth of the atomic age - as in being able to remake ourselves. -Mahatma Gandhi.
