1. Opening and registration The International Training Workshop on Community-based Monitoring, Indicators on Traditional Knowledge and Customary Sustainable Use and Community Protocols, within the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 will be held in Panajachel, Guatemala from Monday, 8 June to Wednesday, 10 June 2015. The workshop will start at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, 8 June 2015 and registration will take place at the venue of the workshop at 8:30 a.m. the same day. 2. General information on access to Panajachel, Guatemala Entry into Guatemala is through Guatemala City - La Aurora International Airport. The airport is situated about 148 kms from Panajachel. Transportation to Panajachel for participants sponsored by the Secretariat All sponsored participants will be transported from La Aurora International airport to the city of Panajachel as it is located 148 kms from the city of Guatemala. Directions to the city of Panajachel you must take the Ruta Interamericana CA-01 OCC highway until Sololá. The duration of the trip is about 2 hours. Transportation to Panajachel for self-funded participants The hosts are organizing transportation to the Panajachel venue for self-funded participants from La Aurora International Airport. When making your travel arrangements it is best to reach Guatemala during the day for onward travel to Panajachel before 4 p.m. Below is a map of the route. Visa information Information on visa related issues is available on the website of the Government of the Republic of Guatemala at: http://www.minex.gob.gt/ (in Spanish only). The list of countries requiring visas is available in the Annex A below. The cost of the visa is approximately US $25.00. Participants requiring an entry visa contact the nearest Guatemalan Diplomatic/Consular representations as soon as possible in order to secure the required entry visa prior to departure. A listing of Guatemalan Diplomatic/Consular representations can be found at the link shown below. It should be noted that some airlines will deny boarding in the absence of a valid visa. Payment of the daily subsistence allowances (DSA) The relevant portion of the Daily Subsistence Allowance (DSA) will be paid to funded participants on the first day of the workshop. 10. Official language The official language in Guatemala is Spanish, in the territory 23 Mayan languages are spoken, in addition to the Xinca and Garifuna languages. 11. Weather and time zone information In June, temperatures in Panajachel usually range between a maximum of +28 C in the daytime and a minimum of +16 C at night. 12. Electricity The electrical currents are 120 volts, 60 Hertz as shown in the illustrations below. 13. Currency The currency in Guatemala is the Quetzal (GTQ). The current exchange rate as at 30 April 2015 is US $1 = GTQ $7.70 and 1 = GTQ $8.66 (rates are subject to change). There is a currency exchange office at the La Aurora International Airport where you can buy and sell local currency. 14. Security recommendations Keep an eye on your credit cards when you are using them. Carry with you only money or valuables that are necessary, you may wish to use money belt. Avoid showing valuable items such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, cameras or other electronic devices that could attract attention. It is recommended to leave your passport at the hotel and only carry a copy of it on you. Avoid taking photographs of children and be discreet about taking pictures during cultural, religious or sacred activities. If you have medical insurance, carry the information with you. Bring basic basic medicine for common ailments such as headaches or indigestion. If you have an emergency please contact the hotel or event organizers Always go out in groups and do not walk around in isolated areas. If you are driving in the capital, keep windows closed and do not use your mobile phone on the street; use caution when using cameras in the capital. For any emergency: call the Tourist Assistance numbers: 1500 or 1+(502) 2421 2810. Please do not purchase any Mayan antiquities or products made from the local flora and fauna. Do not consume food sold in the streets. Do not drink tap water, use only bottled water. Be alert and vigilant at all times. Always travel with a companion. Keep an eye on your bags and personal items in restaurants and other public areas. It is not recommended to travel at night. If you have any questions, consult the organizers. 15. Recommended clothing and accessories Wear casual and comfortable clothes for the days of the workshops. If you wish, bring formal wear for one or two occasions. Bring clothes for a field trip, a hat, a light raincoat may be necessary, as well as insect repellent and sunscreen. 6
