Constructive Method The constructive method of a tunnel plays a very important role within the project and it must be carefully heeded, since it is going to be crucial during the whole constructive process. The final design, geotechnical investigations, calculations, alignment definition or entrance geometry are some of the aspects which must be planned according to the chosen constructive method. Choosing a determined constructive method leads to choosing a determined kind of supervision team, a specific ground sounding and some other particular decisions that depend on the constructive method. In the Pocomaco - San Cristobal section, a new 3,450 m long double track line was built to reach the San Cristobal station in A Coruña. Two new tunnels had to be executed and the Vío tunnel had to be enlarged. Since the tunnel existed already, the sequence of works was the following: execution of a micropiles support, demolition of the existent lining, excavation and execution of the new lining. Cerceda - Meirama Tunnel High-Speed Atlantic Axis. Section: Cerceda - Meirama A Coruña, Spain The Cerceda Meirama is a 8.1 km long segment and it is part of the Atlantic High Speed Rail Axis. It is a bypass of the existing A Coruña -Vigo line. In this segment two tunnels had to be executed: Viris and As Revolta. They meet the new standards in comfort, safety and operation. Moreover, the whole project included a new viaduct, 4 bridges, 3 over passes, 3 under passes, 1 station and 2 connecting tracks with the existing line. The low quality of the terrain forced the use of heavy support lining along the tunnel. In some cases the terrain had to be reinforced with injections. Júcar Tunnel Levante High Speed Rail Corridor. Section: Quintanar del Rey - La Gineta Albacete, Spain The high-speed rail connection from Madrid to the Mediterranean coast (Valencia & Murcia) crosses the Júcar River valley. It is just before the crossing of this river, and due to the rigidity of HSR parameters and the environmental constraints, that a tunnel through the tertiary soils of the Spanish meseta had to be executed. A tunnel was constructed for the high-speed line between Albacete and Cuenca, located near the Júcar River, which is crossed by a viaduct next to the tunnel s entrance. The Environmental Impact Assessment required the execution of a tunnel in order to limit the visual impact and to provide protection to the aquifers. The tunnel was built through the tertiary soils of the Castilian meseta (which consists of sand, gravel and clay). Heavy lining was needed to support the terrain. Bruc Tunnel A-2 Freeway. Improvement Works. Section: Igualada - Esparraguera Catalonia, Spain The A-2 freeway is one of the main freeways of Spain. It connects Madrid and Barcelona. Years after the construction of this infrastructure, an upgrade was needed in order to reach the safety and service standards. The works consisted of the extension of the tunnel in the A-2 freeway, between Barcelona and Igualada. The Bruc Tunnel is a double road tunnel that crosses the massif, separating the region of Anoia and the Llobregat valley (and therefore the access to Barcelona), which is used daily by 35,000 vehicles. It was necessary to find a constructive method that did not affect the tunnel or the evacuation tunnel existing between them. Novelle Tunnel High-Speed Atlantic Axis. The new infrastructure is a conventional road that consists of two lanes, one for each direction, with a third lane in various segments for slow vehicles, whose most important and complex stretch is a 4.5 km tunnel. The whole project contains 5 other tunnels of minor length that serve as access to the main tunnel. All safety requirements were adopted in this tunnel to reach the national and international standards. Client Generalitat de Catalunya (Autonomous Government of Catalonia) GISA 22 23
Tunnel of the Line 9 of Barcelona Metro Barcelona Metro Network. Extension: Llobregat - Parque Logístico Barcelona, Spain The line 9 of Barcelona metro, with a total length of 47.8 km, is the longest underground line in Europe. This line connects the north part of Barcelona s metropolitan area with the southern part, passing through the western quarters of the city. It is a 15.439 m long section, 610 m of which were executed through the cut-and-cover method, and the remaining (14,829 m) were executed by a tunnel boring machine with EPB shield of 9,400 mm in diameter. Fontsanta - Trinitat Tunnel Connection of Barcelona water supply branches (Ter and Llobregat) Barcelona, Spain For decades, Barcelona s water supply has been taken from the Ter and Llobregat rivers (north and south of metropolitan area), using two independent pipeline systems. The extreme droughts that affected this region historically forced the connection of both pipelines, in order to provide a more flexible operation. This connection is done by an 11 km long tunnel, passing through the Collserola Massif in West Barcelona. The tunnel, 6 m in diameter, has been executed by two tunnel boring machines, one of which coming from the Fontsanta water facilities in the south, and the other one from Trinitat in the north. The materials excavated by the TBM were paleozoic schistes and black shales. Sabadell Tunnel Urban Railway Network of Barcelona. Extension of FGC line in Sabadell Barcelona, Spain Sabadell is a city near Barcelona with 200,000 inhabitants. FGC is one of the rail agencies operating in the region and planned to extend the Vallès line in order to improve the service and provide a metro line for Sabadell. To reach this purpose, an urban tunnel was constructed, which includes four stations along the 4.9 km route. The tunnel was executed in the tertiary and quaternary soils of Vallès. During most of its length, the infrastructure is a double single track tunnel with a diameter of 6 m, constructed by a Tunnel boring machine with EPB shield. Some specific sections (maneuvers track and garages) were constructed through traditional methods since they had to accommodate a double track tunnel.
