Themes The land around the Whanganui Port is important to the economy of Whanganui and the wellbeing of the people who live in and around the city. Accelerate 25 has set the ball rolling for local, regional and national government investment in the revitalisation of this jewel in Whanganui s crown. So what can business, government, iwi and community do together to unlock the potential of this place and drive Whanganui s future prosperity?

SPRING STREET extend Spring Street to the waters edge and provide a new tidal stair and public pier 10.CARPARK rationalise the existing parking area to provide improved pedestrian priority and amenity 11.THE STRAND transform the Strand into a waterfront promenade with a flexible, shared surface street that supports events and celebrations. Remove clutter and provide new lighting to transform vertical udentity 12.MASONIC SQUARE create a dynamic and vibrant civic square which stitches together the waterfront and city city and provides a focal point for Tauranga s civic identity and a venue for commu- nity events and celebrations 13. WHANGANUI GISBORNE INNER PORT SPATIAL HARBOUR EXPLODED CONCEPT FRAMEWORK WORKSHOP 001 The design approach for the Inner Harbour proposes four key spatial typologies which work together to define a functional and distinctive public realm. Theses include the Wharf Promenade, Wharf Sheds, Railway Walk and the Esplanade. 1. ESPLANADE -Transform the Esplanade into a slow speed, green and civic urban esplanade, as the unifying and connecting ele- ment of the Inner Harbour. -Replace existing Phoenix Palms with native species which connect Titirangi to the waters edge. -Rationalise existing parking and vehicle behaviour to provide a balance between all users. -Maintain access to parking, the waters edge, boat ramp and existing industry. TRAINSTOP 2. RAILWAY WALK -Reveal and enhance the existing railway tracks as the focal point of a new pedestrian and cycle pathway connecting existing and proposed destinations. - A pedestrian space with opportunities for occupation. -Enable event access for the train via the existing rail bridge and tracks to between sheds 2 and 3. RAILBRIDGE 3. SHEDS -Retain and enhance the 3 existing wharf sheds as waterfront icons. -Improve the occupation and activation of the wharf spaces through appropriate design and use.
