what s on Fundraising and fun at the March markets Continued from front page In recognition of International Women s Day, an annual global event to promote the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, Council s Community Services staff is hosting the Ladies Pamper Parlour with mini massages, mini facials and beauty products, luxurious sleepwear, lingerie and much more, she said. Council staff will be at the Ladies Pamper Parlour talking to people about the planned Disability Inclusion Action Plan and seniors services. Ms Sinclair said people were planning on attending from outside the Shire to take part in Run for Olivia. We even have a bus load of students from New England Girls School coming down to participate in the Fun Run which is great and they have been conducting their own fundraising in the lead-up to the event and are running a massive raffle which will be drawn at 9.15am on the day, Ms Sinclair said. There are some prizes and of course trophies up for grabs, not just for first past the finish line but for who raises the most money through sponsorship. Fun Run registration is only $5 per person or $10 for a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids under 12 years). All proceeds from registration fees goes towards the Olivia Inglis Foundation. The Fun Run is being supported by the Scone Horse Festival, Scone Horse Trials, Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association, Upper Hunter Shire Council, McCallum Inglis and Scone Sports Store. Registration to participate in the Fun Run and sponsorship forms are available at Council s Administration Centre in Scone, Scone Sports Store and the Scone Visitor Information Centre (VIC), downloaded on Council s website at upperhunter.nsw.gov.au/f.ashx/documents/council/news/fun-run- Registration-Form.pdf or by emailing sconevic@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au. what s on Sons of the Soil now on exhibition Jo White s Sons of the Soil is the next exhibition to come to Murrurundi s Michael Reid Gallery. Sons of the Soil celebrates the stories of her family and friends, in particular the dust-tinged tales of Australia s men of the land. This body of work captures the allure of farm life, both on and off the paddock. Where movements are dictated by the weather not the days of the week. Where work and play revolve around the seasons. And where fond memories are forged amid the everyday. Her paintings are inspired by the innocence of a bygone era, one most of us can still remember. Old photos are a constant source of inspiration and give us a window into another time a time when we sought to capture those magic moments. These frozen moments in time form a series of select snapshots of those that brought us to where we are today. The exhibition is open until April 30 with the gallery open Friday to Sunday 11am 5pm. Image: Crawler Crew, 2017, Acrylic on canvas. Carol Scaramuzzi - exhibition of collected works Carol Scaramuzzi has worked prolifically since relocating from Sydney to Scone over 8 years ago with her passion for visual arts informing her days as an active member of the Upper Hunter community. Intrigued by the Upper Hunter landscape and surrounded by the dichotomy of the Hunter s myriad views, Carol seeks to convey the impact of the pastoral/industrial disparity, conflicted by her appreciation of the colours of the bones of the earth exposed against the softness of the natural and farmed environments. Her animal portraits often observe the wild as affected by man. Carol finds influence and inspiration through artists Louise Matthiasdottir and Franz Marc and her own sensitivity to the environment to offer this exhibition of 25 paintings in various media at Small Forest Vineyard near Denman, opening weekends throughout March and April 2017 10am to 4pm. COLLECTED WORKS: Carol Scaramuzzi (pictured) will exhibit at Small Forest Vineyard near Denman in March and April. www.huntervalleyprinting.com.au/pages/entertainer.php Thursday 9th March 2017 - Up Country Entertainer - 3

out & about A hand for our Clean Up Australia Day crews Upper Hunter Shire Council thanks the 50 people who joined Clean Up Australia Day activities in Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone on Sunday 5 March, as well as the hundreds of school children who were cleaning up their neighbourhoods on Friday. Eat your way around the world In Scone, with help from the Scouts, the clean up resulted in 16 bags of rubbish collected. With the barbecue washed out, volunteers were thanked with a free voucher for refreshments at a Scone café as well as a voucher for a free tip entry which went to all our volunteers. Mayor Wayne Bedggood and Cr Ron Campbell joined the Merriwa clean up, which was led by the Merriwa Progress Association. In Murrurundi, the volunteers were led by the local Landcare group, Pages River Warriors and concentrated their efforts around the road to the waste depot, the entrances to town and around the Visitor Information Centre. Clean Up Australia Day is run nationally in March to highlight the problems created by rubbish, and giving the community power to improve the community environment. Under this year s theme of When the rubbish is gone, nature can carry on, over 5000 sites were registered nationally for the weekend clean up. Pictured Above: CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY IN MURRURUNDI: Sandy Archibald, Will Brehaut, Bill Mahoney, Tracy Swain, Lynne Mahony, Leonie Dawes, Mandy Archibald, Judith Ann Gordon, John Barwick, Judy Hynes and Jenny Loasby all giving a helping hand. It is that time of year again when we celebrate Australia s diversity and respect for everyone who calls Australia home, from the traditional owners to those who have come from many countries around the world. There are many ways to celebrate our diversity either through sport, art, dance, storytelling or sharing cultural meals. The Scone Neighbourhood Centre in partnership with the Scone Library will be celebrating Harmony Day on Tuesday 21st March from 6:00 pm by hosting a World of Food at the Scone Grammar School. Those in attendance will also have an opportunity to be a part of the entertainment in the interactive session of Taiko Japanese drumming. Everyone is welcome to attend and encouraged to bring a dish that reflects their background and culture dressing up in national costumes is also encouraged to add to the occasion. Please let staff know the name of your dish or for any other information, contact the Scone Neighbourhood Centre on 6545 2562 or the Scone Library on 6540 1183. leisure & lifestyle Two days of yearlings at Scone in May by Brian Russell A popular feature of Australia s thoroughbred sales for seventy years has been the annual Scone Sale, one originally a mixed collection, but for over the past thirty years conducted primarily as the Inglis Hunter Valley Breeders Yearling Sale and held in May on the last day of the town s annual Horse Festival. It is a sale which has gone from strength to strength in quality with the concentration of Hunter Valley breeding into major operations and the much bigger books put to top sires. The 2016 Sale catalogue of 206 lots included yearlings by I Am Invincible, Manattan Rain, Foxwedge, Unce Mo (USA), Star Witness, So You Think, All America, Casino Prince, All Too Hard, Bel Esprit, Choisir, Mossman, Pierro and High Chaparral (Ire), to mention a few. The demand for use of the Scone market by breeders has got so strong, Inglis is extending the 2017 Sale to two days - Sunday and Monday May 14 and 15, and are cataloguing 300 lots. Lots 1-200 will be selected and presented on day one and the other 100 on the Monday. They will be followed by a selection of weanlings and mixed bloodstock. All 300 yearlings will be eligible for the $5million Inglis Race Series including the $100,000 Scone Inglis Challenge for 2-year-olds.This race is one of the eight $100,000 events (seven stakes) at the $2million Scone Cup Carnival on the Friday and Saturday on the eve of the Sale. Image courtesy of Faras in Focus. Keep the galvanised roof Upper Hunter Shire Council s Heritage Committee is reminding residents, businesses and community organisations that Council approval is required to demolish or alter a heritage item or a building, work, relic or tree within a heritage conservation area. When repairs are made, consideration should be given to using materials such as galvanised, corrugated steel rather than replacing them with more modern products. Council also has grants of up to $1,000 available to restore heritage items or properties. Activities such as replacing roof cladding or making changes to the detail, fabric, finish or appearance of a building that is heritage listed or located within a conservation area requires Council approval unless the works are of a minor nature or for maintenance and Council has provided written notification that approval is not required. Failure to obtain approval is an offence and may result in enforcement action being taken in the form of an Order being served or the issuing of a penalty infringement notice. If in doubt contact Council s Environmental and Customer Services Department on (02) 6540 1100 to discuss your plans. Closing of Wallaby Scrub Road Singleton Council will commence the process for the closure of Wallaby Scrub Road. Coal & Allied applied to Council to close the road in order to progress the expansion of its Mount Thorley- Warkworth operation, which has been approved by the State Government in a separate process. As the owner of the road, Council will instigate a 28- day public exhibition process seeking community submissions and input. The responses will be reported to a future Council meeting.
