The Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) has a long history of operations. In 1911, the Don Mueang area was selected as a military airfield and the inaugural flight landed there on 8 March 1914. At that time, the Army Aviation Unit had the responsibility for supervising the airport. Later, Don Mueang Airport was developed into an international airport and renamed Don Mueang International Airport. In 1955, the name was officially changed to Bangkok International Airport and the airport came under the supervision of the Royal Thai Air Force. Following the National Assembly s enactment of the Airports Authority of Thailand Act, B.E. 2522 (1979), the Airports Authority of Thailand or AAT was formally established and AAT staff commenced work at Don Mueang International Airport on 1 July 1979. The Department of Civil Aviation later transferred 4 regional international airports to the responsibility of AAT : Chiang Mai International Airport was transferred on 1 March 1988, Hat Yai International Airport on 26 August 1988, Phuket International Airport on 8 October 1988, and Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport on 2 October 1998. Moreover, AOT began managerial operations at Suvarnabhumi Airport which opened for service on 28 September 2006. With continued development in airport operations, the status of AAT was changed to a Public Company Limited in 2002 and it was renamed as Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, or AOT. AOT strives to achieve excellence in its operations by emphasizing the development of quality service, personnel capability and information technology systems that respond to the dynamic aviation industry. AOT also places great importance on Corporate Social Responsibility in line with international standards. This focus serves as a guideline for sustainable development, enhancing the confidence and satisfaction of airport customers under the slogan, Safety and Service Are Our Priorities. 7

Airports of Thailand plc, (AOT) as a state enterprise under the Ministry of Transport, and as a public limited company listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, operates with regard to maintaining public interest in conjunction with the business practice under the policy and administration of the Thai government, with consideration towards the needs and expectations of stakeholders in the government and private sectors and the general public. AOT operates six international airports, namely; Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport, Phuket International Airport, and Hat Yai International Airport, all of which accommodate domestic and international passenger flights. With investments with business partners in airport related businesses, AOT is Thailand s major provider of basic transportation infrastructure involved both directly and indirectly in the promotion and facilitation of the transport and logistics industry, the tourism industry and the business and investment sector. AOT is projecting the image of being the gateway to the ASEAN region, welcoming international tourists and travelers from all over the world with warm and friendly service and offering a high level of comfort and convenience. The vision of AOT is to propel the organization toward becoming the operator of the World s smartest airports with a mission to manage 8

and promote the airport business and other businesses related or connected to airport operations with a high regard to sustainable development. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej graciously granted the name Suvarnabhumi and prescribed the meaning as Golden Land. His Majesty gave the English name to this airport as Suvarnabhumi Airport and presided over the foundation stone laying ceremony of the passenger terminal on 19 th January 2002. Suvarnabhumi Airport is located in Samutprakan Province, 31 km to the east of Bangkok. Opened for commercial operations on 28 September 2006, Suvarnabhumi Airport is Thailand s premier airport. Featuring a modern design and equipped with the latest technology, Suvarnabhumi Airport is poised to support any foreseeable growth in the air transport industry. In 2015, the total number of passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport reached 46.5 million travelers. Of these, 38 million were international passengers, and 8.5 million were domestic passengers. Most of the passengers were Thai, Chinese and Japanese travelling in groups for leisure or tourism purposes and averaging 5-7 days per trip. Suvarnabhumi Airport is one of the major connecting hubs in Asia for 111 different airlines. The airport has the capacity to accommodate up to 76 flights per hour. It now serves 184 routes, connecting Thailand to 64 destination countries. In 2015, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and Europe in descending order were the top three global regions that brought in the highest volume of passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport. 11

Suvarnabhumi Airport, Phase 2 Development Project (2016-2019) Suvarnabhumi Airport Phase 2 Development Project includes the construction of a Midfield Satellite Building with an area of 216,000 square meters and its adjacent apron and a connecting tunnel with Automated People Mover System. The passenger terminal will also be expanded to the east with additional space of 60,000 square meters, along with the new airline office building and parking lots. Don Mueang International Airport is located 25 km to the north of Bangkok city center, and 46 km west of Suvarnabhumi Airport. It has been in operation for 102 years and presently serves as the hub for Low Cost Carriers (LCC) in Thailand. In 2015, it was ranked at the top of the World s Busiest Low Cost Carrier Airports by Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA). In 2015, Don Mueang International Airport served a total of 19.3 million passengers, of which 5.3 million were international travelers and 14 million were domestic passengers. The top three nationalities of passengers in descending order were Chinese, Thai and Malaysian. The main purposes for traveling were leisure, tourism and family visits, with an average of 1-3 days per trip. Terminal 2 started its operations for domestic passengers on 24 December 2015. Pier 5 and the South Corridor were opened on 5 February 2016. These bring the total handling capacity of the airport up to 30 million passengers per year. AOT also plans to improve Terminal 1 and carry out Phase 3 of the Airport Development Project. These plans include the renovation of the old domestic terminal, the construction of Junction Terminal, which will be connected to the Red Line of Bangkok Transit System (BTS), a new car park with a capacity for 3,000 additional vehicles. Once completed, the total handling capacity of Don Mueang International Airport is expected to increase to 40 million passengers per year. As the Gateway to Lanna Heritage, leading visitors to the land of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage in the Northern Region, Chiang Mai International Airport provides access to neighboring provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Lamphun and Lampang. From Chiang Mai, visitors can also travel onto Myanmar. Chiang Mai International Airport currently serves a total of 6.21 million passengers in 2015, of whom 1.2 million were international and 5 million were domestic. Most of the airport s passengers are Chinese and Thai traveling for leisure and tourism purposes. MAE FAH LUANG - CHIANG RAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Regional Center for Aviation-related Business Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport strategically is positioned as the Regional Center for Aviation-related Business with the objective of serving the rapidly developing countries along the Mae Khong River and in the southern region of China. On 13 th March 2010, His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej auspiciously granted the name Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai International Airport for Chiang Rai International Airport in commemoration of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra and her contribution to the betterment of the people in Chiang Rai. The airport is located 182 km from Chiang Mai. Apart from its role in promoting nature tourism in the northernmost region of Thailand, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport also functions in the role set by AOT as the Regional Center for Aviation-related Business, serving the countries along Mae Khong River and the Southern region of China, which are growing rapidly. In 2015, the airport served a total of 13,402 flights and 1.75 million passengers, which represented an increase from 2014 of 22% and 26.58% respectively. PHUKET INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Gateway to the Andaman Phuket International Airport has been designated as the Gateway to the Andaman providing access to tropical island vistas of unsurpassed beauty and internationally renowned seaside resorts offering service with a smile and Thai hospitality. This region of Thailand is a premium destination area full of luxurious retail stores, top tier accommodations, world-class restaurants and excellent service facilities. As the Gateway to the Andaman, Phuket International Airport serves the highest volume of travelers after Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, welcoming visitors from around the globe to one of the world s most popular seaside destinations. In 2015, Phuket International Airport welcomed a total of 11.2 million passengers, which were made up of 6.38 million international visitors and 4.89 million domestic travelers. Most of the visitors came from Russia and China, and their main purpose was leisure and tourism. Development projects that have been carried out at Phuket International Airport include the construction of an additional 10 aircraft parking bays, a new international passenger terminal with an area of 72,338 square meters. The new terminal building consists of level 1 and 2 for arrival passengers and level 3 for departure passengers, whereas level 4 displays shop, restaurants and recreation area. A typical design of Chino-Portuguese architecture Phuket Old-Town was an inspiration of the design of some areas on level 4 for passenger attraction. Located in Songkhla Province, Hat Yai International Airport has been designated the gateway to the five southernmost provinces of Thailand and the neighboring countries in the south, which are Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia. One of the airport s major roles is to facilitate the Muslim passengers on their pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. In 2015, it accommodated a total of 24,607 flights and 3.64 million passengers, an increase of 10.25% and 15.65% from 2014 respectively. The largest numbers of passengers came from Malaysia and Singapore, whose purpose for traveling to Thailand was leisure and tourism. In 2015, Southeast Asia and the Middle East in descending order were the top two global regions that brought in the highest volume of passengers at Hat Yai International Airport. 23

Performance As one of the world s most popular tourist destinations, coupled with the Government of Thailand s policy to promote the tourism industry, Thailand and its air transport industry has been experiencing a steady growth with regard to the number of flights and passengers using various airports operated by AOT. This growth has been increasing at an annual average rate of 12.9% between 2013-2015. In 2015, the total number of flights handled by all six airports was 727,750, with the total number of passengers at 109.82 million, which was an increase over 2014 of 16.6% and 21.31% respectively. The top three regions of the world where the highest volume of visitors originated from were East Asia and the Pacific, Southeast Asia, and Europe. Aviation Safety and Security All of the six international airports under supervision of AOT operate under the airport and aviation industry safety and security standards both in normal and emergency situations in accordance with the state regulations and the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), with the implementation undergoing continual review at the corporate and the airport levels. In addition, AOT has acquired and installed an array of modern technological equipment in compliance with the required standards, as well as recognized the importance of the development of personnel with knowledge and skills necessary to perform their jobs. AOT has instilled in its personnel the importance of safety and security standards as part of AOT s Five Core Values in order to achieve the highest standards and effectiveness, as well as build confidence among the passengers and service users. 25

Human Resource Development AOT put emphasis on developing the knowledge and capability of its personnel in operating and managing the airports in compliance with the standards set by domestic transport organizations such as the Department of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Transport, and by international agencies such as International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Personnel with a high level of capability are a major force in driving the organization toward its goal of creating customer satisfaction and sustainable success for the organization, and ultimately creating Thailand s image of professionalism to the ASEAN countries and the world. Cooperation Cooperation and coordination with other agencies within the airport for efficient operation AOT operates in close coordination with relevant authorities in passenger service and service users taking into account convenience, safety and speed. AOT has established a facilities and security sub-committee consisting of various departments of AOT and other service providers from both public and private sectors. The committee meets on a regular basis to discuss the means to increase the efficiency of the operations in all Thai airports and resolve any issues pertaining to airport operations. Collaboration AOT has engaged in the Sister Airport Agreement or the Strategic Cooperation Agreement with other leading airports around the world. since 2009. These airports are Munich Airport (Germany), Incheon International Airport (Korea), Beijing International Airport (China), Austin Bergstrom International Airport (USA), Luang Prabang International Airport (Laos), Yangon International Airport and Naypyidaw International Airport (Myanmar), Narita International Airport and Kansai International Airport in Osaka (Japan) and Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Noi Bai International Airport, Danang International Airport and Phu Quoc International Airport (Vietnam). The goal of this program is to exchange experience in the management of airports and personnel development, business development, technology and marketing, as well as to share the expertise of each airport, with a focus on enhancing the relationship and cooperation between the participating airports. 27

Care for the Environmental, Society and Community Airport operations will be recognized and able to successfully co-exist with a society when all sectors have the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn and cooperate with each other in order to drive for development. An airport brings with it prosperity, a better economy and improvement in the quality of life in the community. AOT places an emphasis on the development of its airports in tandem with social responsibility in the economic, social and environment aspects by clearly defining a mission in the interest of the both internal and external stakeholders, appropriately engaging each sector in the process. It also places importance on generating growing returns from the business operations in a fair manner, creating a sense of responsibility toward society and community, and defining guidelines for compliance with the international environmental standards, in order to strive to have environmentally friendly airports. AOT has joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program organized by the Airports Council International (ACI) to drive airports social and environmental responsibility by encouraging airports to measure and monitor the level of carbon emission released into the atmosphere, and to manage the use of energy. Currently, there are 157 accredited airports around the world including five of AOT s airports (Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Hat Yai International Airport) which have achieved the Reduction certification level. 28

Achievement Dow Jones Sustainability Index AOT is the first airport operator in Thailand and Southeast Asia to be selected as a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI - 2015) in the Transportation Industry and Transportation Infrastructure Group. Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) AOT has been selected as a member of Thailand Sustainability Investment (THSI), the group of listed companies with sustainable operations for the year 2015, compiled by Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET). The list is based on assessment criteria of economic, social and environmental factors including good corporate-governance practices. The purpose of THSI is to identify companies, which display outstanding corporate sustainable development practices thereby attracting both domestic and international investors. ESG100 AOT has been ranked one of the top ESG 100 Companies by Thaipat Institute, which is an organization that conducts research on corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. ESG100 refers to 100 best-performing publicly listed companies in Environmental, Social and Governance areas. The AOT headquarters was awarded Thailand s Top Corporate Brands Value plaque of merit in the Transport and Logistics category in 2015 from Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy, Chulalongkorn University. 29
