USIL INTERNATIONAL VICE PRESIDENCY AND USIL SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY DEANSHIP SERVICE- LEARNING OPORTUNITIES IN CUSCO HEALTH SAN JUAN DE DIOS CLINIC Hogar Clínica San Juan de Dios Charity institution run by the Hospitallers Order of the Brothers of St. John of God and a staff of health workers dedicated to serving children and adults with disabilities. In the 16th century,st. John of God (Juan de Dios) founded his order s first hospital in Granada, Spain. Currently, the Brothers of St. John of God have health facilities in more than forty countries on every continent. In Peru, they have had clinics in several cities since 1606. USIL volunteers have been assisting the clinic in Cusco since the year 2011, with many rewarding experiences helping with the children s social development. Today, volunteers help children who are learning to eat, accompany hospitalized children, celebrate with children at parties, assist with meal preparation and do laundry. : Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. Where: 264 Manzanares Avenue, in the Urbanización Manuel Prado neighborhood. 10 minutes by taxi or 15 minutes by bus from USIL. CHILDREN HUILLCAPATA SCHOOL Huillcapata School is a public school that provides primary education to 70 children from low-income families, whose ages range from 3 to 14. It is located in a rural area, 20-25 minutes from the city of Cusco. Volunteers teach English; help out by cleaning, painting and redecorating the school facilities; and assist with maintenance of the greenhouse. These activities take place every Friday from 8:00 to 13:00 hours,only during regular semesters (not during summer periods). So far, many students have taken part in this project, along with a number of volunteers from visiting groupsfrombellarmine University, Lafayette College, Broward College and Akita University. Remarks: Volunteering at this school requires a playful spirit, a sense of humor, creativity and a plenty of room for love in your heart. As this school is located outside the city, USIL provides transportation. Minimum number of participants: 4 volunteers MARIA SALOME FERRO YOUTH HOME Hogar de Niños Salomé Ferro The Salome Ferro Youth Home cares forboys from 5 to 18 years of age, who are usually referred by the courts,whether because they are orphans, have alcoholic parents, have suffered domestic or sexual violence, or are at risk in some other way. Our volunteers have had rewarding experiences providing assistance to this home since November 2012. Theyhelp the boys with their school work, teach them English, and organize leisure and recreational activities for them. They also assist with social reintegration and occupational training workshops, and help out in the kitchen and laundry, as well. : Monday to Friday from 14:00 to 19:00 hours. Where: 433 Grau Avenue. Care for wild animals (condor/alpaca/ vicuna/spectacled bear). Lead tours for visitors. Participate in forestation activities. Participate in campaign to clean up the Quesermayo River, which runs through the sanctuary. 5 hours per day/ 2 times a week, Monday Sunday At least 18 years of age. Ability to work under pressure.
