Deeper Serengeti DAY BY DAY ITINERARY safari in style 888.658.7102 info@deeperafrica.com www.deeperafrica.com Beverly Asilia Africa OVERVIEW: DEEPER SERENGETI Deeper Serengeti allows a depth of wildlife viewing in the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara not easily experienced elsewhere. While most safaris will only spend two or three days in the Mara/Serengeti, this safari devotes nine days observing four separate ecosystems; two in Tanzania and two in Kenya. Fly in and out of the Serengeti bush for a bird s eye view and faster transits so you can maximize your time wildlife viewing. Each ecosystem has its own special gems: cheetah on the Serengeti plains and the western Mara, rhinos in the northern Serengeti, and lions, as well as leopards, in the Mara and Seronera areas. All of the camps in this itinerary are in remote, breathtaking locations. No fences, no settlements -- just a perennial migration of wildlife instictively moving with the seasonal rainfalls, migrating as much as 300 miles a year. Safaris in Style with Deeper Africa Safaris in Style are an African original. Camps set in remote and unique ecosystems where the wildlife is spectacular. Lodges where service standards are high, food is elegant, and the décor is unique. No humans for miles, just wilderness and wildlife. Learn by going, seeing, and doing, a bush guide at your elbow. Do it once; do it right. Be in the best camps. Have the best guides. Return transformed, having come face to face with nature.
DAY 1 ONSEA HOUSE ARUSHA Onsea House Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport outside of Arusha, Tanzania. A Deeper Africa driver will be waiting for you. After clearing customs, look for him holding a sign with your name on it. From the airport, your driver will transport you to Onsea House. Spend the evening resting up from your international travels and enjoy the stylish accommodations and gourmet cuisine that Onsea offers. Belgian Chef Axel Jannsens creates menus that are a unique fusion of his European roots and his African surroundings. In addition to serving top notch cuisine, the kitchen at Onsea serves as a training ground for local Tanzanian youth, many of whom lived on the streets before joining Axel s program. DAY 2 OLAKIRA CAMP OR DUNIA CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK at Onsea House. Transport to the Arusha Airport for your bush flight to the Serengeti. We select the best camp for your safari based on season and migration patterns, so you can be as close to the herds as possible. Depending on your departure dates, you ll be spending your time at either Olakira Camp in the far southern reaches of the Serengeti ecosystem, or at Dunia Camp which is more centrally located in the Seronera region. Your Deeper Africa guide and Land Cruiser will be waiting for you at the bush strip. Once you enter the Serengeti, you ll immediately begin wildlife viewing as you travel the distance to camp. We ll have lunch ready for you by the time you arrive. Once you are in the Serengeti we will give you insight into how Deeper Africa invests and nurtures the benefits of wildlife tourism flowing into local communities and households. This is the key to long term conservation of these wild places and wild animals. If wildlife tourism can benefit local communities and local people, then Africa s great parks will survive and prosper. Alcohol & Beverages Sun Downers Asilia Africa
DAY 3 OLAKIRA CAMP OR DUNIA CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Asilia Africa The annual migration is what makes the Serengeti famous. The herds gather on the Tanzanian side of the ecosystem from sometime in November or December through early July. The migration includes vast herds of wildebeest, but also zebra and Thomson s gazelle. Unlike the migration herds, predators are territorial, remaining Desert & Delta in their home territory all year long. Substantial populations of buffalo, giraffe, and warthog can be found, as well as a wide range of antelope species. Not to mention lions, cheetahs, and leopards on the prowl. If at Dunia Camp, you ll begin your wildlife viewing in the central Serengeti around the famous Seronera River. Seronera is actually a network of perennial rivers that merge into a valley, so there is water year round. The river marks the boundary between the sweet grass plains of the southern Serengeti and the wooded hills of the north. That means that plant, animal, and bird species from both different habitats can be found here in one place. Seronera is one of the most wildlife rich ecosystems in the Serengeti, all year round. At Olakira, you can be sure you will get up close as possible to the herds, as the camp s location shifts seasonally to place you at the most prime location. Alcohol & Beverages Sun Downers
DAY 4 SAYARI CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK at camp, followed by transport to the bush strip for your morning flight. Your Deeper Africa guide will see you safely onto the bush plane and then begin the drive northward to meet up with you this evening at Sayari Camp. Sayari Camp is located in the northern Serengeti at the Mara River. This is a vast pristine ecosystem. Few tourists venture into this wild region. Unlike the dry southern plains, this area remains lush and green all year. Sayari is located close to the Lamai Triangle, which is home to the largest remaining concentrations of elephants in the Serengeti. There are rhino in this area, as well. The Mara River area of the Serengeti is famous for great film footage of wildebeests surging on the river banks and then dashing into the water, with crocodiles at the ready. If you visit in July, August, late October, or November you may have the opportunity to see some of these spectacular river crossings. The river always has high concentrations of hippo and crocodile, some in excess of 18 feet. Alcohol & Beverages Sun Downers Swimming Pool Asilia Africa
DAY 5 SAYARI CAMP SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Asilia Africa Take some time to view wildlife in the Wogakuria kopjes, the highest place for miles around. You can see yellow plains off in the distance, and the flow of wildlife moving through this vast area of bush and woodlands. Scan the kopjes carefully for the surefooted klipspringer antelope. Wogakuria s open grasslands allow for the highest concentration of cheetahs in the northern Serengeti, with the Maasai Mara just off in the distance. You ll also find oribi antelope in Wogakuria s broad-leafed woodlands. Sayari Camp also offers the unique opportunity to leave the Land Cruiser behind and share the earth with the Serengeti s wildlife. Walking safaris are guided by experienced in-residence walking guides. To ensure safety, an armed ranger also accompanies the walks. Animals are usually spotted on walking safaris, however the goal is not to get as close as possible to the wildlife, but rather to observe their undisturbed behavior. This is one of the few areas within the Serengeti boundaries where tracking and spotting skills can be learned on foot. Alcohol & Beverages Sun Downers Swimming Pool
DAY 6 NAIBOR CAMP MAASAI MARA RESERVE Today you ll be traveling from the Tanzanian side of the Serengeti to the Kenyan side: the Maasai Mara. Head to the bush strip for your flight across the border. We ll send you off with a packed lunch while you travel. Pickup at bush strip by Naibor Camp staff in the early afternoon. Naibor is located at the heart of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in the midst of the great Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The camp is at the confluence of the Mara and Talek Rivers. It is an unfenced, remote wilderness camp in an area teeming with birds and wildlife. Any expert on the geography of the Mara will tell you that this is the place to be. Naibor Camp is dedicated to community development. The nearby Maasai community receives a direct contribution every night a guest stays in camp. This contribution is used for social development projects focusing on micro-finance for businesses, as well as health and education infrastructure. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages Naibor
DAY 7 NAIBOR CAMP MAASAI MARA RESERVE Tom Dietrich This area of the Mara is a well known home for African big cats. You ll be scouting for cheetah in one of the two remaining cheetah strongholds in the world. Cheetahs face increasing pressure from humans and land encroachment - with between 9,000 to 12,000 left in the world. They are an endangered species. Cheetahs often have territories of 770 square miles (1,239 sq. kms), hence many parks don t have enough space to sustain viable populations. The Mara/Serengeti cheetah population is threatened by a lack of genetic variation, making them susceptible to disease and decreasing reproduction. Still, there have been quite a few cub births in the Serengeti cheetah population over the past five years. The most famous are Sita s cubs from the well-known Disney documentary African Cats. DAY 8 NAIBOR CAMP MAASAI MARA RESERVE If you are traveling in July through October, the great migration herds will be the main attraction in the Maasai Mara. Don t miss the opportunity to do your wildlife viewing right in the center of the action. Close by to any herds will be prides of lions. Lions are territorial and control set geographic areas year round. Daughters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and neices all live together for up to 15 years the typical lifespan of a lioness. Look for lionesses on the hunt stalking through the grasses, or male lions lazing in whatever shade they can find. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages Naibor
DAY 9 OLARE MARA OLARE MOTOROGI CONSERVANCY Kempinski After breakfast, drive east into the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which borders the Mara. The Conservancy is 35,000 acres of prime grasslands, riverine forests, and acacia woodlands. Here you will have the rare opportunity to enjoy wildlife viewing surrounded by miles of uncrowded, unspoiled wilderness. Olare Mara is a groundbreaking exercise in conservation. In the past, the grasslands here were overrun by cattle that drove the wildlife away. With the establishment of the conservancy, its founders sought to restore the wildlife populations that were once plentiful, but also understood that the Maasai communities who grazed their cattle also deserved to benefit from sustainable tourism. All safari camps in the conservancy pay a fee to operate, which in turn subsidizes the income of local herders who agree to limit their cattle grazing. Sundowners Alcohol and Beverages Wifi Today, as a result of these efforts, you can enjoy prolific sightings of lions, leopards, cheetah, plains game, and even wild dogs off-road and close up, day or night. The conservancy has one of the highest densities of lions per square mile in Africa.
DAY 10 OLARE MARA OLARE MOTOROGI CONSERVANCY Spend today taking in all the sites and sounds the conservancy has to offer. Those traveling in July - October will have a front seat to over a million zebra and wildebeest meandering through the area. Big cats tense in anticipation of a chase. Hyenas stalk nearby and vultures circle, looking for an opportunity to steal their next meal. Overhead there are 50 different raptor species to be seen.
