Peru in 2 weeks A land of panoramic views Trip code: Group size: Number of days: SPZ 6-24 16 Detailed description Welcome In Peru there is culture aplenty : the many relics from the Inca time such as the world famous Inca city of Machu Picchu and the Spanish Colonial architecture in Arequipa, Puno and Cuzco. In terms of nature, the country is as just as diverse: the Andes climb to more than 6000 meters high, there are snowy mountains and volcanoes, the beautiful Lake Titicaca and of course the enigmatic Nazca Lines. Discover the Ballestas Islands, with their seals and numerous waterfowl. In the markets of Cuzco and Puno witness the different Indian tribes in their colourful costumes, a sight for sore eyes. In villages and cities, in the markets, on the train and on the floating reed islands get to know this friendly Indian population. Peru in 2 weeks is a short tour of the highlights of this fascinating country! Day to Day schedule Below is a summary of the day-to-day description. Transport Route Overnight stay 1 Lima Lima 2 Lima Lima 3 Bus Lima - Pisco - Huacachina Huacachina 4 Bus Huacachina - Nazca Nazca 5 Public transport Nazca - Arequipa Arequipa 6 Arequipa Arequipa 7 Bus Arequipa - Chivay (Colca Canyon) Chivay (Colca Canyon) 8 Bus Chivay (Colca Canyon) - Puno Puno 9 Puno Puno 10 Bus Puno - Cuzco Cuzco 11 Cuzco Cuzco 12 Cuzco Cuzco

13 Cuzco - optional excursion Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) Cuzco 14 Cuzco - optional excursion Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) Cuzco 15 Cuzco Cuzco 16 Cuzco End of tour Day to Day description Day 1: Lima Welcome to Peru! Your tour starts in Lima, where you can use your hotel room from check in time (12.00 hrs at noon). Most of your travel companions will arrive later this evening, the exact time will be depending on their flight schedule. You will also meet your English speaking tour leader. Day 2: Lima Today we are free to explore this beautiful city at leisure. The city centre around Plaza de Armas is full of old colonial buildings, palaces, churches, monasteries and museums, including the Museum of Anthropology & Archaeology. The shopping streets are busy and lively and in the evening you can sample local cuisine in one of the many restaurants. Day 3: Lima - Pisco - Huacachina After leaving Lima behind, you drive south through the desert, which stretches from the center of Chile to Northern Peru and extends as a narrow, dry coastal strip. This is an area where using irrigation systems are an increasingly common agricultural practice. On the way you can take an optional excursion to the Ballestas Islands. This archipelago is half an hour away by boat and is the habitat of thousands of sea lions, penguins, cormorants and pelicans. While the sea lions are swimming around the boat, look at the countless birds on the rocks. On the way you sail past the "Candelabra", a rock-hewn drawing whose meaning and origin is still unknown. You'll also sail along the peninsula of Paracas. The islands here are protected nature reserves. Day 4: Huacachina - Nazca The combination of the cold Humboldt current flowing along the coast of Chile and Peru and the dry desert air lends itself to beautifully shaped sand dunes interspersed with oases. They arise in those places where the rivers, originating in the Andes, flow into the Pacific Ocean. It is around one of these oases that the town of Huacachina is located. Huacachina is situated on a lagoon with water that is claimed to have a medicinal effect. Maybe hone your skills on a sandboard, surfing the dunes! Or end the day with a spectacular buggy ride at sunset over this special landscape. This afternoon we continue our journey by bus to Nazca, famous for its intriguing Nazca Lines. Just as amazing is the cemetery at Chauchilla, where sun-bleached Nazca skeletons guard their age-old resting place.

Day 5: Nazca - Arequipa This morning you can take an optional flight across the famous Nazca Lines or you can sit and relax by the hotel swimming pool or book another optional excursion. In the afternoon we will board a comfortable public bus to Arequipa where you will arrive late in the evening, after a journey along the coast and through the mountains. Day 6: Arequipa Arequipa is a beautiful old colonial city, surrounded by volcanoes including the famous El Misti, which can be seen from Plaza de Armas. Although the city was founded by the Spanish Conquistadors, many remains from preinca and Incan times can still be found in and around the city. A variety of day trips are available, however, in Arequipa itself, the Santa Catalina convent, one of the most beautiful in the New World, is worth a visit. For 400 years, nuns lived here in total isolation, until 1970 when the convent was opened to the public. You should also visit the Museum of Sanctuaries Andinos and see the mummy of a young Inca girl, Juanita, who was sacrificed to the volcano to put it in a more favourable mood. Day 7: Arequipa - Chivay (Colca Canyon) Today we cross the Altiplano with its fantastic views of the surrounding volcano peaks, the pampas, where vicuña graze, and through several small traditional villages, to Chivay. This trip can be physically demanding because of the altitude, which rises as high as 4800 m. Our visit to the ³Cruz del Condor with its splendid view of Colca Canyon, one of the deepest gorges in the world, is one of the highlights of our journey and if you are lucky you may catch sight of the majestic condor floating on the thermals. The entrance to Colca Canyon National Park is included in your holiday price. Day 8: Chivay (Colca Canyon) - Puno This morning we move on to Puno, where you are free to spend the day as you please. Puno lies on the banks of Lake Titicaca, the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. You can visit the Sillustani Tombs here, where the Colla people, a pre-inca civilisation, buried their dead. You could visit Puno s colourful market or explore the town at your leisure. Alternatively you may choose to make an excursion to the where pre-incan excavations at Tihuanacu, in Bolivia. Day 9: Puno Alternatively you can take a trip to the Uros and Taquile Islands. The 300 inhabitants of the Uros live on Lake Titicaca, on floating islands made of totora reeds. Their small houses and boat are also made out of reed and the largest island has two-storied houses and a school. The Indians on Isla Taquile are known for their weaving culture.

Day 10: Puno - Cuzco The bus ride from Puno to Cuzco takes you along a nicely paved road through the Altiplano, past corn and quinoa fields interspersed with pieces of wasteland. After you have passed the busy city of Juliaca you drive through the area where once the Pukura culture prevailed. Then continue to the La Raya pass, at more than 4300 meters high. On either side loom some beautiful, snow-covered mountains $URXQG WKH DUHD RI /D 5D\D LV WKH University of Cuzco and a facility for breeding alpacas and llamas for quality wool. The bus ride from Puno to Cuzco takes about seven to eight hours. En route you'll pass several villages and a few interesting Wari and Inca ruins such as Raqchi and Pikillacta. Provided there is time you will also visit the picturesque village of Andahuaylillas, with its beautiful church before arriving in Cusco. You can also (optional) take a train from Puno to Cuzco. This comfortable train departs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday mornings from Puno, then in the evening you will arrive in Cuzco. Day 11: Cuzco The Incas considered their city as the 'navel of the earth' and central to the Inca empire. The Spaniards had little respect for the Inca culture and many religious temples were cleared to make way for their baroque churches and for the building of ornate houses. The mixture of architectural styles in Cuzco can clearly be seen in the alleyways around the Plaza de Armas. In the city itself, there is plenty to do. If you are interested in the Inca culture, definitely visit the Museo Inka, which is full of gold and silver artifacts and large earthenware cups. The only remaining Inca Palace, the Coricancha, is not to be missed. During the last earthquake in 1950 the walls of the monastery and church of Santo Domingo were exposed but restoration work has since taken place in such a way that the Incan masonry is still visible. It's worth buying the Cuzco visitor ticket, that gives you access to almost all major monuments, churches and museums. Remember that if you opt for the 4 day Inca Trail, you will have little time to see Cuzco (and vicinity)! Day 12: Cuzco Today you have a free day to spend in Cuzco. Inca trail For hikers, nature and culture lovers the 42 kilometre long Inca trail is a true challenge but truly enchanting. This is a rugged trek where you sleep in twoperson tents so make sure you prepare yourself thoroughly. It is best to walk the Inca trail between May and October, although there may be one or two showers. Please note that during the month February the Inca Trail is always closed for maintenance. For a description of the Inca trail please check the information at the end of the final day of this tour. Day 13: Cuzco - optional excursion Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) Today you can join an optional excursion to Machu Picchu (request when booking). You travel by train to Aguas Calientes. The train ride through the beautiful scenery of the Sacred Valley takes about four hours. The rest of the day you are free to explore the town or to take a nice walk. You can even visit the Inca city of Machu Picchu today. Keep in mind though that the bus between Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu would today be at your own expense (on day 14, the bus is included), and that for two days you will need to pay the entrance fee to Machu Picchu.

Day 14: Cuzco - optional excursion Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) Today is the planned day that you'll visit the hidden city of the Incas: Machu Picchu, beautifully situated on a plateau surrounded by rugged rock formations. Due to its unique location, the city was never discovered by the Spaniards, leaving them exceptionally well preserved. Only in 1911 were the ruins accidentally discovered by American historian Hiram Bingam who thought that he had found Vilcabamba. Archaeologists assume that it was once a religious city of the Incas, but the exact function is still unknown. There is plenty of time to explore this great complex with its many temples, terraces and sacred sites. For the classic photo of Machu Picchu climb up to the Hut of the Caretaker of the Funerary Rock. For a completely different view then hike to up to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) or to the top of Huayna Picchu, also with spectacular views. In the afternoon take the train back to Cuzco. Day 15: Cuzco Free day in Cuzco. Take a stroll through the streets of the artists' quarter of San Blas or watch the market sellers trying to sell their beautiful llama and alpaca sweaters. It is also worthwhile to take an optional excursion to the Sacred Valley. This will include a visit to the ruins of Pisac with beautiful views, and of course the Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo, where the Incas achieved one of their few victories over the Spaniards. If you have time you can end this tour by visiting the pre-inca salt pans of Salineras. The sight of these pans, situated in a valley, is very beautiful. Cuzco attracts crowds of tourists from around the world because of it's historical importance. It is therefore not surprising that cuisines from almost every country are represented. In the evening enjoy a live performance by Indian musicians until the early hours. Day 16: Cuzco The last day of your tour. You can use your hotel room in Cuzco until check out time (most times at 12.00 hrs noon). We wish you a comfortable journey home and are sure you will take with you some wonderful memories of Peru. Your personal µmy.shoestring page on our website is the perfect way to make contact with other travellers before and after your trip. You can read and create journals from trips and upload your photos onto the photo gallery. Visit my shoestring today. When booking your tour, please check to see whether you need any posttour nights, bearing in mind that accommodation for the night of the final day of the tour (day 16) is not included. With a group of 8 persons (or more) the entire trip will be carried out with private transportation (except for the section from Nazca to Arequipa, as mentioned in the day-to-day description). With a group of up to seven persons the sections Lima-Ica-Nazca and Puno-Cuzco will be carried out using public transportation. Naturally, the tour leader takes care of the tickets for the public transportation. Festival tour On the trip departing June 10th 2018, you can see the Inti Raymi Festival from Cuzco. availability http://www.inca-trail.com.pe/dispo/index.php?lg=en 4-day Inca Trail This is the ultimate tour for people who have adequate time, good health and good fitness. In four days you can walk from 2000 meters to 4200 meters and along 3900 passes. You will also walk over plains, sometimes by a dense cloud forest mountain with beautiful bromeliads and lianas. Also explore with the local guide who accompanies you throughout the trip, some very beautiful Inca ruins. Cooking utensils, tents, provisions and fuel for four days go along with the local porters. Take a small backpack with you containing your stuff for 4 days, and your sleeping bag. For an extra fee you can have the porters carry your luggage (please do this immediately upon booking if you wish). 2-day Inca trail You will be accompanied by a local guide who will stay with the group during the entire trek. Local porters carry the cooking equipment, tents and provisions for two days. You carry a small backpack containing your needs for these two days and a sleeping bag. This two day walk of the Inca trail starts near the holy Urubamba River and ends in the afternoon in Machu Picchu, where we will stay the night at the foot of the city in the village of Aguas Calientes. The next day we have plenty of time to take a guided tour of the ruins, in late afternoon we board the train to Cuzco. If you want to walk the Inca trail, indicate this on your booking form and as the trek is extremely popular and places are limited book early to avoid disappointment. When booking, give your exact name and passport number (your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the tour), this information will be printed on the entrance tickets. Given the high cancellation we charge 100, - cancellation fee if you decide to cancel once all is confirmed. The impossibility of confirming the Inca Trail does not mean that the whole trip may be canceled free of charge. If you have booked either the 2 or 4 day Inca trail, you will not stay overnight in Aguas Calientes (plus train trip) according to the standard programme. Obviously, all these costs are taken into account in the price. This trek gives you the opportunity to see how the Quechuaspeaking Indians of the high mountain villages make their living from agriculture. The Lares trek is seen as not too difficult and is similar to that of the Inca Trail. However, there is a peak of over 4000 meters to climb and so it is important that you have a reasonably good physical condition. People who go trekking only need to take their day baggage (the bulk of your luggage you leave in the hotel in Cuzco). You'll visit the ruins of Ollantaytambo, an important Inca construction built during the heyday of the Incas. 28 Duration: 8 hours Departure: 08:30 am. Includes: transportation, English speaking guide Not included: entrance fees (22 USD) lunch and tips Minimum number: 2 persons. With more participants, the excursion becomes cheaper (and vice versa!). Stated price based on 10 participants. Cuzco - Tambopata jungle extension (book before departure) The ''Peru in 2 weeks'' trip can be extended with a 4-day (3 nights) jungle tour in Puerto Maldonado followed by a night in Lima. The islands also have some impressive rock formations and you will certainly sail alongside the Candelabra (an archaeological etching in the hills), which is best seen from the sea. 16 Duration: 2 hours Includes: boat tour to the islands and a local guide. Exclusive: entry fee + port tax (4 Euros total) You travel in international company (shared excursion) Festival info INTI RAYMI - CUZCO From the mid 20th century the inhabitants of Cuzco, Peruvians throughout the country and foreign interested parties all celebrate the Inti Raymi festival. The Incas traditionally celebrated Inti on June 24, but the Spanish invaders banned this celebration for centuries. June 24 for the Incas, marks the beginning of a new Solar Year (Inti Raymi). This day revolves around the sun and it is when we have the longest day of the year. During the festival, the Sun God Wiracocha and its relationship with the sun is honoured by man. The Inti Raymi days are worth attending, because there are fun activities on the streets, dancing and live performances (at the central Plaza de Armas) organized. At the ceremony there will be hundreds of people present. It is worth doing some advance reading too because during the performances only Quechua (Inca language) is spoken. The Sapa Inca honours Wiracocha: People gather in the square for the Coricancha or the Santo Domingo church on Avenida El Sol. Here, the Sapa Inca (the divine emperor of the Inca Empire) calls on the blessings from the sun. Then he is carried in a procession on a golden throne to the Inca Fortress Sacsayhuaman. The accompanying people then make music with drums and the Sapa Inca in turn blesses the people. Previously the 5 hour show would end with a white llama sacrifice. The llama is now no longer really slain. The people kneel down towards the sun as it starts to set. You can see all the festivities in and around Cuzco and witness the procession to Sacsayhuaman. The entrance fee to Sacsayhuaman, where the final ritual of the parade takes place, is U.S. $ 100. For this section are limited tickets available. The tour leader, at the beginning of the journey will ask if anyone is interested and will arrange this for you if there are still tickets available. Please note that the travel routes during festival tours can be adjusted. News COUNTRY INFORMATION PERU BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Culture In Peru it is customary to start with a greeting and to inquire about someone s well-being. You will often hear "Buenos dias, como esta? ". On meeting and parting, men and women give a short kiss on the cheek to women, even if they hardly know each other. Indians do not kiss, but sometimes give a weak handshake. Politeness is highly appreciated. They have a different notion of privacy than we are used to and subsequently can get very close. They go through life well dressed and therefore do not expect tourists to be dressed scruffily. Shorts are not considered improper; nevertheless, in less touristy regions long trousers are more appropriate. Anyway, most of the time it will be too chilly for shorts. It is considered offensive to call someone of Indian descent Indian, Indigena is preferred. Food and drinks Food: In Peru, the main meal of the day is lunch (almuerzo). Breakfast (desayuno) tends to be light, even though the majority of hotels and restaurants serve desayuno Americano as well. Generally, Peruvians eat their dinner (cena) late. When eating in small restaurants it is best to opt for a busy place, the food is fresh and appetising. Do be careful of the salads; they may be cleaned in tap water. Many local restaurants have a fixed menu (el menú) for around 3 dollars. For this, you get soup followed by a main dish, usually chicken or pork, with rice and vegetables. Each region has its own specialty. You will find Peru s well known local specialty in and around Cuzco: grilled guinea pig (cuy). Furthermore, you will come across alpacas not only into the wild on the Altiplano, but also in shops, as a woollen jersey; it could also turn up on your plate as a steak. You can find delicious cakes and snacks. Drink: Tap water is not suitable for consumption. Buy bottles of purified drinking water, available all over the country. Make sure the bottles have their original seals intact. Ice cubes are also a bad idea, as these contain tap water, especially at local restaurants or bars. Agua con gas means water with gas and agua sin gas means water without bubbles. Té means tea as we know it, and mate means herb tea. You will frequently come across mate de coca, tea made of coca leaves. It is supposed to be good for altitude sickness and is very popular in the highlands. Generally, coffee is available but don t expect too much; usually it is Nescafe. Café con leche means coffee with milk (tasting more like milk with coffee!). Hot chocolate is popular, as are fresh fruit juices. Soft drinks such as coke are on sale everywhere. You can also try extremely sweet Inca Kola. Tipping The basic pay of hotel and restaurant staff that make life agreeable along the way by cooking, making the beds, etc. is meagre at best. You may not have a ready solution for the poverty affecting these countries, but the least you can do is give the individuals working for you a good tip. A tipping box may be useful, to be administered in turns by the passengers and in consultation with the guide. Also, while you are on the road, snacks etc. can be bought from this money. The tour guide will expect a tip on completion of his/her services, assuming he/she has provided satisfactory service. Our guideline is approximately 1 per person per day. Weather and climate Climate: There are two seasons: a dry season, running from May through September and a rainy season, between October and April. Although, it is only in January that the real rain starts, January and February are the wettest months. As a rule, it showers in the evening. In the Andes, the weather tends to be unstable and unpredictable. In high altitude areas, it can be chilly. At night, temperatures may drop below freezing point. By day, temperatures are around 20 degrees. Best time to visit: The best time to visit is from May through October. It s true that temperatures are lower during this period, however showers are sparse. In the mountain areas you should count on brief showers occurring throughout the year.

Population Peru has around 28 million inhabitants. The population of Peru is mainly a mixture of Indians and mestizos (descendants of Indias and Spaniards). In addition, there are some important communities as Chinese and Africans. The official language in Peru is Spanish, but there are communities, where the inhabitants still speak Quechua and Aymara. Life expectancy is 60 years for men, and 65 years for women, 10 years less than in most Western countries. In Peru, and especially in Cuzco and the Colca canyon, you may see Peruvian women wearing traditional, colourful clothing and large, bright hats. Those living around Lake Titicaca often wear homeknitted hats. In this region, the men knit clothes, while chatting with friends and walking the streets. The women weave colourful cloths to carry their children and purchases on their backs. Landscape Peru offers a huge variety of cultural and geographical possibilities for the traveller. The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Peru is Inca. The Inca civilization definitely is South-America s bestknown and studied pre-columbian culture. The landscape is scattered with Inca ruins and splendid examples are to be found in the surroundings of Cuzco. Peru covers an area of 1.285.215 square kilometres; it is roughly five and a half times the area of Great Britain, the third largest country in South America. Peru borders Ecuador and Columbia to the North, Bolivia and Brazil to the East, Chile to the South and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Peru lies in the tropics, the equator is only a few kilometres distance north of Peru. Geographically, Peru can be divided into three regions: a dry coastal strip running along the country s entire length (the world s driest desert, the Atacama Desert, starts here), to the East the Andes and to the South East the Amazon rainforest. After the Himalayas the Andes is the largest mountain chain in the world, it cuts through Peru from north to south. Peru s highest peak is the Huascaràn (6768 m). Half of the Peruvian population lives in the Andes at an altitude between 3000 and 4000 metres above sea level. Background Info Peruvian architecture has two different styles: Spanish and Inca. Upon arrival in Peru, you will be amazed by the very typical Spanish architecture of the splendid buildings around the Plaza de Armas, Lima s most prominent square. The large cathedral is worth a visit. The architecture in the central square of Cuzco also makes you feel like you are in Spain. One of this tour s highlights is a daytrip from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu where you will visit the ruins of an ancient Inca city. Notice the deliberate inclination of the walls to make them earthquake-proof. Also, you will see the ancient city s different sections, each one of them with different types of buildings. In the outer layers lived the common folk, in the centre of town the high priests. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Arrival information Take it easy for the first day in Peru. Take the time to recover from the flight, get used to the different climate, culture and country. Let it slowly work its magic on you. The more you can relax the more pleasure you will get out of Peru. Time differences The time in Peru is GMT - 7 hours. Money The amount of spending money suggested, is the minimum required to pay for your meals, drinks, optional excursions, entrance fees, local airport taxes and tips. The amount you actually need of course depends on your own spending pattern; therefore souvenirs are not included. We suggest 225-275 per week.

Luggage and clothing On this trip we will stay in high places. Bring along warm clothing, such as a fleece sweater or jacket. By day, it will be mostly sunny, so thin, cotton clothes and shorts are indispensable items. However, please note that for this trip extra warm clothes are a must, especially in the summer season (May October) when temperatures may drop at night as low as -15 C. Gloves, bonnet and / or a scarf should be part of your packing items! Bringing too little clothing is better than bringing too much as you can buy anything you lack for next to nothing. An umbrella and a thin rain jacket might come in handy, the former protecting against both rain, and blazing sun. You need a good pair of worn-in hiking shoes, with good tread and a pair of flip-flops. Other important items are sunglasses, sun creams, toiletries, a first-aid kit, a hat/scarf, a (video) camera and sufficient film/videos and spare batteries, a torch, towel, a pen-knife, a lighter, an alarm clock, writing equipment, books, passport, sufficient travellers cheques and money, copies of your passport and travel insurance, a list of the numbers of your travellers cheques and receipt of purchase, your flight ticket, all relevant travel insurance details and emergency contact numbers and your holiday guide with the important addresses. We advise you bring along a weekend bag or backpack. A solid suitcase is inconvenient if you have to carry it yourself on and off trains etc. Also, bring along a small backpack or shoulder bag for hand luggage. A thin money belt, to be carried underneath your clothing, is also advised for storage of valuable documents. Take care to put some clean clothes in your hand luggage, in case your main luggage arrives later than you. For example, the pill and your toothbrush should be in your hand luggage. Check that your luggage is not too heavy. Electricity In Peru the electric energy is 220 volts but in many 4 and 5 star hotels you can find 110 volts too. Power cuts occur now and then. In that case, hotels usually produce candles or oil lamps. A good torch is certainly useful, especially for evening walks. The abundance of holes, bumps and ditches in and along the roads can cause nasty falls if the streetlights suddenly go out. Safety Theft does occur in the cities. A simple method to avoid pickpockets is to store money and important documents close to your body, ideally in a money belt. Have some pocket money ready, so you do not have to search for it in the middle of the street. Pay good attention to your possessions and to what is going on around you. Robberies tend to take place in the places you should avoid, such as dark alleys and dark deserted beaches. Stay away from people offering drugs and do not go along with plain-clothes policemen who don t show proper identification. Your belongings will be reasonably safe in your hotel room, but do not leave valuables behind. If you use your common sense and stay alert, you shouldn t have any problems. Health The following health information is a general text that applies to all our travellers in South America. Those who pay some attention to hygiene and skincare do not usually run into health problems. Food and drink: Temperatures in Peru can be extremely high and if you do not drink enough run the risk if getting dehydrated. This effect is magnified at high altitude. Tap water is unsuitable for human consumption. Generally, mineral water is available. When ordering a drink, ask the staff not to add ice cubes, as these are usually made of tap water that and may contain germs. In small eating-places, it is better not to eat fruit or salads that have been skinned beforehand. Preferably, take your meals in busy restaurants. They are busy for good reason and the food is fresh. Clean your hands thoroughly before eating and keep your fingernails short. Sunshine and heat: Sunburn, particularly at high altitudes, is a frequent cause of health problems. Sunburn and heat strokes are easier caught than you may think. You should therefore avoid the sun during the hottest hours of the day, always wear a hat (or carry an umbrella) and good sunglasses when you are walking, and use the recommended factor of suntan lotion. These are best brought from home. At high temperatures, the body s need for water increases very rapidly, as does its need for salt. Make sure you drink enough. Take it easy during the hottest hours of the day. Treat small scratches, wounds and insect bites before they become infected. Diarrhoea: Next to sunburn, the most common health problem is diarrhoea. Travellers are often hit by it

after they have been on holiday for only a few days. In most cases it is innocuous and caused by the change of diet, the heat or harmless bacteria, against which the body will soon develop its defences. The main risk is dehydration. It occurs when the body loses more fluid, salt and sugars than it receives. The result is a feeling of listlessness and weakness. It can be prevented by drinking a solution of water and ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution). It is sold in bags at the pharmacies and contains all the minerals and sugars that are evacuated with diarrhoea. Instead of this solution you can also take noncarbonated soft drinks or heavily salted broth. For many people, Coca Cola has a constipating effect in the first stages of diarrhoea. When the diarrhoea is accompanied by high fever and/or bloody defecation it is sensible to consult a physician. When the diarrhoea lasts for more than a few days without these symptoms or when you have to travel, you may take Imodium (or Diacure) a couple of times. It is an opiate that prevents bowel movement for a number of hours. Insect bites: Mosquitoes are not a big problem here, however, they are found in some places. Insect repellents are effective, but do not expect miracles. Physicians, pharmacies and medication: If you want to consult a physician, ask advice from the guesthouse/hotel staff or the travel guide. First-Aid Kit: A good first-aid kit could consist of plasters, bandages, cotton wool, scissors, a thermometer, iodine, painkillers, malaria tablets, Oral Rehydration Solution bags, Imodium, sun cream, earplugs, and tweezers, insect repellent and an anti-itch cream or lotion. If you must regularly use prescription medicine, bring with you an exact description of the medicine in English (no brand names, just the essential ingredients, composition and dosage), bring twice the dosage necessary for the duration of the holiday and store in two separate places, so you have a back-up supply. Altitude sickness: About half of the people who stay at heights above 3500 metres will suffer from altitude sickness to some degree. It is a reaction of the body to the decreasing oxygen content in the air. The danger is in the accumulation of fluid in the lungs or brain. Altitude sickness is potentially deadly. Be sure to be alert to the symptoms. Before giving a description of the symptoms, note that contracting the illness is not dependent on your physical fitness or routine when walking at altitude. Practised mountain hikers and even our bearers in Peru can contract it even after long exposure. People under thirty, those who have had altitude sickness before and people with a pulmonary or heart condition are at a greater risk. There is a wide range of symptoms with altitude sickness. The French Alpine Association works with a scoring system in order to assess the seriousness of the situation. Symptoms with one point are nausea, headache, insomnia, dizziness. Two points: vomiting, headache that does not react to aspirin. Three points: excessive fatigue, shortness of breath or tightness of chest without exertion, little or no urination. If you do not score more than three points you can keep on going up slowly, but it is better to go on climbing when the symptoms have disappeared completely. Between four and six points, must be careful and wait until the symptoms have disappeared, or even better descend a couple of hundred metres. More than six points means: there is a life-threatening situation at hand, descend immediately, the patient cannot stay at this altitude and certainly not sleep here. During this journey, we will reach a height of 4900 metres at most. This is not an altitude where one can expect great difficulties but it is necessary to be alert. Most travellers will experience a difference when exerting themselves. At a height of 4000 metres, climbing two flights of stairs can even be a difficult task. The best thing is to take it easy and drink a cup of Coca Tea now and then. Vaccinations: Below is the recommendation of the Health Authorities when this edition went to press. This information may change. Furthermore the question is what your personal needs are, which depends on earlier vaccinations, possible sensitivity for certain medicines, pregnancy, age etc. ALWAYS contact your General Practitioner or the Practice Nurse for advice. We at Shoestring cannot provide any further information by telephone. The complete overview for this journey is: DTP, hepatitis A, Typhoid and yellow fever. Plan ahead, some inoculations need time to achieve the desired effect. Compulsory vaccination for yellow fever in Peru. Recently, for travellers booking a time extension to the jungle in Peru a vaccination against yellow fever was made compulsory. You have to be able to prove this on arrival by showing a certificate or stamp. Further advice to make you journey more pleasant: Allow your body and mind the time to steadily adjust to the new time zone and location. Avoid tension, do not draw up a plan immediately. In any event take it easy on the first day. Getting up early is a good habit; in warm countries, the morning temperature is usually the most agreeable. The people here are used to getting up early. If you adapt to their rhythm, you will make the most of your time.

Photographs Peru is an extremely photogenic country. Unfortunately, not everyone likes to be photographed. The photographing or (video) filming visitor should realize that they cannot intrude into people s lives without being asked. Always ask permission first and respect any possible objections. Frequently, locals ask money for a snapshot and you ll find out soon enough whether you are dealing with a professional ; if you do not want to pay for a picture, you will have to find another subject. It is possible to buy film on the spot, but generally only in large towns. Make sure the film is not past the use-by date and is not stored in overly warm conditions. It is advisable to buy sufficient film/video prior to the trip and not to forget spare batteries. It is possible to develop and print your photograph in various places. Generally, the quality is acceptable, but do not take this for granted. Avoid leaving film or camera behind in a locked car as the fast rising temperatures can damage film quickly. Information for people at home Make sure that those at home know which country you are in and how long you are planning to stay away. You may fix a date when you will contact them again. Provide those picking you up from the airport with your flight times and numbers. Shoestring will not provide flight and/or travel information, accommodation names and telephone numbers to third parties. Any information on delays can be retrieved via the information number at the airport or Teletext, not via Shoestring. Contact persons In case of an emergency, it is important for us to have details of someone we can reach as a contact person back home on your behalf. You will have entered a name on the booking form. It is possible that this person is unavailable or on holiday during your trip. If so, enter a second person so that we are sure to be able to get in touch with somebody. General information Tour leader Our tours are led by trained, local English speaking tour leaders. We know that our travellers appreciate being accompanied by these local tour leaders who, compared to their counterparts (living outside of the destination) have more detailed knowledge of their country. He/she knows the area well, can provide background information and ensure that the trip goes smoothly. He/she knows what to do if something were to go wrong, but is not a "walking encyclopedia". Therefore we would like to refer you to study a good travel guide (book) in advance of travel. Your tour leader understandably expects a tip at the end, if she/he has completed the job well. Shoestring pay the tour guides a wage which is higher than that of most adventurous travel companies. Our guideline for tipping is between 1, - and 2, - per passenger per day (the equivalent thereof). Sustainability
