July August 2013 Brandywine Valley Ski Association PO Box 549, Downingtown, PA 19335 www.brandywinevalleyski.com PREZ SEZ First, I want to say Thank Goodness summer is finally here. Seems like the hot, humid, hazy days of summer, turbulent lightning storms and more rain than we have seen in several years has not affected our summer events. The warm days and cool nights have been a blessing, so in writing this month s newsletter I would like to once again thank our board for volunteering and being diligent in planning so many activities for us in the coming months. Here is also a shout out to Dave Mertz and Jeff Klein for another great Flotilla at March Creek. Some of you have asked about the June-July newsletter and so I felt I should explain to everyone that circumstances happen, and as volunteers, there may be a reason that prevents us from delivering what is expected. Again, we are human and volunteers, so something happened and our newsletter did not go out. However, that just means there is so much more to communicate to you in this version of our newsletter. Another important point is that BVSA does not have a general meeting during the months of June, July and August. We resume our general meeting the first Wednesday in September with an open house for our membership and quests. The venue for our general meetings will continue at the Brickside; however, we are in discussions about changing the time from 8:00pm to 7:00pm. There will be more definitive communication about this next month. Ski trips have been planned and approved and flyers are included inside, so please check them out and sign up early. The July pool party presents an opportunity to sign up for the trip of your choice and enjoy a wonderful day of sunbathing (I am the ultimate optimist for a sunny day) while gathering with your BVSA friends and enjoying a picnic with our wonderful host, Pam Terry. We are once again recognizing Anita Gordon Palmer in the Spotlight feature story of her involvement with the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired. Anita does so much for BVSA and in her spare time volunteers for this fantastic organization. Please see Anita s article and give her a high-five when you see her. For those members who missed our May general meeting, Doug Chapman gave us some really good paddling tips and he is available as a guide on March Creek or the lake of your choice, or if you want to go hiking. See Jeff Klein if you have any interest or stop by March Creek and ask for Doug. Just another friendly reminder that as a member of BVSA, you are also a member of the Eastern Pennsylvania Ski Council ( EPSC ). Take a few minutes to review the discounts available to our club. Check out http://www.easternpaskicouncil.org for discount lift tickets and see what other clubs like ours plan for their members. Speaking of memberships, don t forget to get your membership renewal forms completed (with your preferences). You can now sign up online and pay your dues thanks to Barb Cropper and setting up BVSA on Wild Apricot. Thanks Barb! Enjoy the rest of the summer and hope to see you at the Brickside concerts and Happy Hours. KOPSC/BVSA Flotilla Day - June 1, 2013 The weather was sunny and hot. We arrived early so that we were able to unload our vehicles and secure our spot. As we were carting stuff down to our spot, additional help came to set up the area. Ian P., Terry F. and Dan the Man helped out and the set up was complete. We had the model sailboat club share our spot and it was enjoyable to see the entire small sail boats race against each other with a talking time clock. We knew that it was going to be a good day as our crowd began to show up and take over the spot. Al K. wanted to help out by helping to sign people in and then Barb C. showed up and assisted in the process. Throughout the day, there was a breeze which made it enjoyable to sit and look at the boats on the lake. Dave M started to cook the hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill. Joyce M. and Suzanne B were making sure that people were happy. Jack and Sue S. and Mark R. relieved Dave with cooking on the grill and other people decided to step up with the cooking duties throughout the day. Terry M. provided the tunes via his MP3 player. There were plenty of appetizers, side dishes and desserts on the tables. By this time, we had a small flotilla with kayaks, sail boats, canoes, row boats and a wind surfer. The winds cause waves on the lake and there were times when the lake was smooth. As the crowd grew larger, we started to play volleyball. It was a challenge at first to get people to play because they were enjoying the food and all of the activity going on in the lake and among them. Eventually as people were full from eating and drinking, we got some games under our belts. We also got some laughs from shots that were hit across the net and into it. After playing a few games of volleyball, the attention shifted to the water balloon toss. Since it was hot, the water felt good when the balloons popped and the folks laughed at it. Since Dave M. got Suzanne M. with a balloon, Suzanne was determined to return the favor to Dave. There was also the Oreo cookie eating contest as a few folks lined up in a row in chairs and put the cookie on the side of their noses, some folks laughed as the cookies fell off the participants faces while trying to rely on their faces to get the cooking into their mouths. By the end of the day, we ended up with a total of 110 people. By the time the event was officially over at 6PM, there were still 30 people in a group enjoying the sights around them and on the lake. This was certainly a joint club effort with participation assisting in helping out with chores. Special thanks go out to the following people who volunteered their time to help out with this event. Joyce Molinaro for getting the ice, drinks, relish trays and hamburger fixings, and also helping to make sure that everything was organized. Suzanne Monteleone for getting the balloons and helping out where we needed it and Mark Rybas for his assistance in cooking on the grill, etc. Al Keffer, Barb Cropper and Terry Fite with helping to sign people in. Phil Shiner, Jeff Klein, Steve Schmidt and Rick Cornejo for helping out with cooking on the grill and Barb Siegel for being the photographer. Also, our thanks goes out to those from both clubs who helped us clean up the site and took stuff out to help load the vehicles. Until next time, Dave Mertz, Joyce Molinaro, Suzanne Moneleone and Mark Rybas Photos by Barbara Siegel 11

The Spotlight - Volunteer Recognition As a member of the Christiana Lions Club for the past five years, Anita Palmer Gordon decided that SABVI was an ideal place to volunteer. She s been at SABVI for about six months working on community outreach by phoning municipalities and senior living facilities listed on a spreadsheet from her home. She then transitioned to her current volunteer project based at the SABVI-Lancaster location. She s busy phoning the rehabilitation department s clients and inquiring about their current goals or needs for SABVI services. Through these phone conversations, Anita discovered that she is continually impressed by SABVI clients. She recently met one of the employees from the Lancaster Industrial Division in person after she left him a phone message. She said she admired him because he hasn t let his disability hold him back or overwhelm him. Anita explains that although she has found being a Lion and volunteering for SABVI rewarding, both are also important to her on a deeper personal level. Her eighteen year old grandson has a rare disease causing vision and hearing loss. In addition, she was told by her eye doctor that she is a candidate for Glaucoma and Age Related Macular Degeneration and has cataracts. Anita recommends to anyone who is interested in volunteering to choose SABVI because of the friendly staff and very worthy cause. We thank Anita for her work as a Lion and as a SABVI volunteer. If you have not yet received a phone call from Anita, please thank her when you do!
