MY ROTARY EMBLEM It grants me a great and honourable privilege. Anywhere I go, each wearer of this noble badge is my friend. Into their surroundings I may go with assurance of a warm welcome. It requires of me that I think in harmony with the principles of Rotary, the highest in the land and broad enough to encompass every daily activity. It requires that I dispel the prejudices of race, creed and political views. I must be patient, liberal, just and upright, all to a noticeable degree. It reminds me that it moves in a realm to itself. It is looked upon with unimpaired respect wherever it appears. Its wearer enjoys a distinction that only the violation of its principles can mar. All this speculation makes me wonder if I deserve to wear it. Am I equal to all it implies?

Shane James Shane James lived an active outdoor life and was a Tasmanian State Surf Champion in his younger days, but in March 2006 (age 43) his world collapsed, when he sought treatment for a lower back pain. The Doctor s report: vertical fracture below L5; prolapsed disc; nerve damage between L4 and L5; bulging disc at C6. To top it all off, you have disc degenerative disease. The weight loss was frightening from 74kg to 43kg in a couple of weeks. Many months later he was diagnosed with a very rare, nightmarish neurological disorder with no known cure - Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS). Doctors said he d never run or play sport again: Their prognosis: Wheelchair-bound, then bed-ridden and an early death. Eight years later, Shane holds a Silver Medal from the Australian 2012 Masters Field Hockey Championship and is a marathon and ultra-marathon runner. How did he do it? Shane trusted his intuition and started running. The pain subsides as he runs and, at the finish line, the endorphin rush carries him along. He is extremely happy to have a second chance at life. When asked how he copes with the pain and stress of running a marathon, Shane replies: "The pain of not running is much worse." Shane ran the Boston Marathon in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In 2012, he completed the Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race, run over five days at altitudes up to 3,600 m. He finished 17 th out of the field of 67 and the race organiser said: We all were stunned at the courage of Mr. Shane James from Australia, who has been fighting a very rare, painful and debilitating disease, with running. Shane is a Burnie Rotarian who Runs to Live. Come to the OneCare Rotary District Conference 20-22 March 2015 and meet Shane James.

DISTRICT NEWS PROPOSED LEGISLATION FOR 2016 COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION The proposed enactment This information has been emailed to Rotarians, and Secretary Roy proposes to put it to the Club at our meeting on 16 th December, as District requires and answer by 24 th December. The foundation for the proposed changes has been drawn from information on the pilots for each of these membership types developed by Rotary International (so it complies with the pilot programs). Some of the conditions around the membership types are: ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP - A person must be interested in prospective membership in the future and must meet the qualifications of a Rotarian (good character, classification etc). - Would not pay RI or District dues but a club could require payment of a club fee (that would be included in Club bylaws). - Would not be recorded as being a member with RI or be counted as a member for the purpose of District or RI voting (which is based on numbers in a club). - Would not be able to hold office or have voting rights in a club. - Length of membership would be determined by the club board (be included in Club bylaws). - An associate member could apply to the club board to convert to active (individual) membership. - A current active member could not convert to an associate member. CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP - The firm, company or institute would be the single member with up to four designees being able to represent the member at clubs meetings, projects etc. - Each designee must meet the qualifications of a Rotarian (good character, classification etc). - A designee could hold office and have voting rights in the same way as an active (individual) member. - A designee could apply to the club board to convert to active (individual) membership whilst they are still employed by the member (i.e. company) or if they leave the company (in which case they would no longer be a designee). - The Club bylaws would describe what conditions a firm, company or institute would need to meet in order to be elected as a member. What is required The District needs the approval of Clubs to be able to propose the enactment to Rotary International. FORTHCOMING MEETINGS With the Christmas / New Year fast approaching, Rotarians are reminded of our forthcoming Meetings.... Picture 18 young people (9 migrants and 9 mentors) at sea for 10 days, disconnected from the outside world (definitely no mobile phones) but fully reliant on their own personal attributes, physical, mental and emotional as well as the mutual support of their shipmates. This is certainly character building stuff and as Captain Sarah Parry said, it doesn't matter what their background is, rich or poor, quiet or confident, throwing up over the side together is a great leveller!! We look forward to seeing their return on Thursday. I and PAG Tony Colman also met with Beacon Foundation personnel to progress a partnership between our two organisations. As I mentioned during my official visits I was keen for Rotary to be involved in addressing youth unemployment in the State and the proposal that Beacon have put forward is very positive indeed. More about that as soon as we have had time to review the proposal in detail. Likewise a planned partnership between Rotary and the Menzies Institute has progressed to the point where I expect to have an MOU in place that will formalise Rotary's support for Menzies programs TasELF, which looks at heart health and disease progression, and CDAH, which looks at the links between childhood lifestyle and adult disease risk. LAPEL BADGE Great to share with overseas visitors and students $3.50 each, $3/ 10 Rotary Club of Howrah info@howrahrotary.org.au Reg Emmett at 0417 391 607 (These badges have been available for a while and some members may already have one.
