The conference which was organized by the Greek Society of Regional Scientists, the Business Administration department of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, the School of Production Engineering and Management of the Technical University of Crete, the Mountain s University and the Regional Science Inquiry Magazine, has brought together more than academics and scientific researchers on regional development as well as the Greek regional authorities and experts working closely with them. The aim of the conference was to bring together academic researchers and professionals in the field of regional development. This practice enabled the share of knowledge, experience and presentation of new ideas, tools and models in the field of regional developments and entrepreneurship. Participants offered guidelines and techniques that will be used both to enrich and strengthen cohesion between regions by improving quality of life through sustainable development. During the conference, Theocharis Tsoutsos, Associate Professor of the Technical University of Crete and member of the conference s scientific committee, has presented the scope, activities and outcomes of the European initiative Green Partnerships. He highlighted the role of local communities to the fight against the climate change and to the achievement of the 2020 targets set by the European Union. He presented the lessons learnt during the project implementation for the improvement of sustainable energy action plans of cities and regions and for the efficient operation of local partnerships between local authorities, stakeholders and the private sector in order to effectively implement sustainable energy projects. Closing, Prof. Theocharis Tsoutsos explained the GreenPartnerships pilot projects, which are currently under development in cooperation with the Municipality of Rethymno.
