URBAN DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA STUDY TOUR 2018 LONDON & MANCHESTER VIA HONG KONG

INTRODUCING THE UDIA NSW INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR 2018 Following the success of the past six international study tours, in 2018 UDIA NSW will be travelling to London & Manchester via Hong Kong. London's urban form is developing in response to the economic, social and environmental challenges associated with its role as a global city. The tour will focus on learning from the local property market on urban planning, innovation, land use, master planned communities, affordable housing, transport-oriented development, urban regeneration, and one of the world's first City Deals - which aims to drive local economic growth and the use of value capture to fund transformational infrastructure projects. Hong Kong is the most unaffordable housing market in the world, with Sydney second. This leg of the tour will examine the expansion of Hong Kong's urban footprint in recent decades and its reliance on transport orientated development along with how it manages its growth in a sustainable manner under its governance principle of one country, two systems. The UDIA NSW International Study Tour 2018 itinerary has been designed specifically for leaders in the Australian development industry from both the public and private sectors. Tour delegates will meet with local and international developers, consultants and other officials to exchange views and ideas. The tour offers a learning and networking experience not to be missed with industry leaders from Australia, Hong Kong and the UK. LONDON & MANCHESTER VIA HONG KONG May 27 to June 8 2018 previous tours Dallas Chicago 2017 Shanghai Guangzhou Hong Kong 2016 San Francisco Los Angeles Tokyo 2015 2014 Singapore & Shanghai 2012

Salford Quays, Manchester WHAT YOU WILL SEE AND LEARN ON TOUR Inter Government Collaboration in City Shaping Connectivity Seamlessly navigate your way around global cities as you experience best practice public transport links between urban centres. Apartments in Hong Kong Excellence in Design & Innovation In response to Hong Kong s affordability crisis see how their architects and interior designers have tackled the challenges of designing nano apartments of 12m² or less. Learn how different levels of government come together to shape the growth of cities by examining the Manchester City Deal. Value Capture Hear from Transport for London as they explain the successful value capture method used to fund and deliver Crossrail, a new 118km railway line servicing London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Essex. Strategic Planning Learn about strategic plan-making for land use and social-economic development and construction. Affordable Housing Visit leading affordable housing projects and learn how this asset class is financed in the UK. Kings Cross Station, London Urban Renewal Hear from the local experts and visit key sites to witness first-hand the transformation of deteriorating areas into modern urban treasures, including Kings Cross Station, Greenford and Battersea Power Station. Build-to-Rent Obtain an insight into how Build-to-Rent is planned, designed and financed in the UK by meeting with global experts and seeing some of the leading projects. Transport-Oriented Development Experience how public transport shapes city development. One of the more sustainable forms of urban development is the transport-oriented development (TOD) model, essentially creating a development hub at each mass transit station. Public Private Partnerships See innovative arrangements between public agencies and private sector entities. Public Space Experience world class placemaking in Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus in London and Lan Kwai Fong in Hong Kong. MTR Station, Hong Kong Battersea Power Station, London

HONG KONG Hong Kong is an autonomous territory on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary in East Asia, south of the mainland Chinese province of Guangdong, and east of the special administrative region of Macau. With over 7.4 million Hongkongers of various nationalities in a territory of 1,104 km 2, Hong Kong is the fourth-most densely populated region in the world. Hong Kong tops several global indexes including: the most skyscrapers of any city the world; the most unaffordable urban housing market in the world; the highest daily per capita usage of public transport; and the world s longest life expectancy. The Hong Kong pattern of urbanisation is underpinned by significant investment in a connected public transport system based on the idea of the spatial overlapping of transit modes. The expansion of Hong Kong s urban footprint in the last several decades has been intimately tied to transportoriented development. As its population expanded from the original urban core of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, new urbanisation in outlying areas of the territory have followed a linear pattern that is set by the rail tracks laid down by Hong Kong s MTR Corporation, the primary rail provider. Expected Weather Forecast: Low: 24 High: 31 Warm, humid, chance of rain, high pollen MANCHESTER The Greater Manchester region has a total population of almost 3 million and is the second largest conurbation in the UK, after Greater London. Manchester is the primary economic engine of North West England and is a hot focus for new investment and job creation. The city is underpinned by world-class universities, a knowledge-based economy, a thriving city centre and Manchester International Airport and attracts above-average rates of new business start-ups. Manchester played a significant role in the industrial revolution in the 18th century and much of its character is derived from that era. The decline of manufacturing in the post-war era forced Manchester to reposition itself. Despite a remarkable economic transformation over the last two decades, the city is still tackling the social, physical and environmental legacy of years of economic decline. Manchester is one of the 8 core cities included in the UK Government s first wave of City Deals in 2012. It gives the city and its surrounding area certain powers and freedom to take charge and responsibility of decisions that affect their area. Expected Weather Forecast: Low: 9 High: 18 Mild days, cool evenings LONDON With a population of circa 9 million, London is the capital and the most populous city of both England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames in the south east of the island of Great Britain, London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km 2 ) medieval boundaries. London is a leading global city in commerce, entertainment, the arts, education, media, fashion, finance, healthcare, professional services, research and development, tourism, and transportation. It is the world's largest financial centre and has the fifth largest metropolitan area GDP in the world. In 2012, London became the first city to have hosted the modern Summer Olympic Games three times. London is the world's most-visited city as measured by international arrivals and has the world's largest city airport system measured by passenger traffic. It is one of the world's most important investment destinations, hosting more international retailers and ultra highnet-worth individuals than any other city. London's universities form the largest concentration of higher education institutes in Europe. Expected Weather Forecast: Low: 12 High: 23 Sunny days, chance of rain, cool evenings
