Welcome FUTURE OF SPACES AND PLACES IN CITIES The role of Urban Parks and Recreation On behalf of Parks & Leisure Australia and World Urban Parks we invite you to be part of this year s International Parks Congress in October 2018 to be held in Melbourne, Australia. In 2009, for the first time ever, the world s population became more urban than rural. By 2050, around twothirds of all people will live in cities and urban populations will grow by more than 2 billion people. It is therefore imperative to ensure cities are liveable and that everyone has access to parks, open space and recreation. World Urban Parks Parks for All Statement (2017) This city is an appropriate location as Melbourne has been ranked as the world s most liveable city for seven consecutive years (according to the Economist Intelligence Unit) and Melbourne Lord Mayor said the title is something all Melbournians should be proud of: We do not take this title for granted and are constantly planning and implementing policies that will continue to improve our quality of life. Public open space can define a city, as Central Park defines New York, Melbourne s extensive open space creates the outdoor liveability of the city and is an important component of that ranking. It is consequently fitting that the city will be hosting this special event bringing together leading professionals from across Australia and the world to share best practice, innovation and discuss trends as increasingly more people live in urban environments. The contribution that the many forms of public open space make to health and well-being is increasingly being recognised as vital part of everyday (especially urban) life. Delegates will come from the three levels of government, associated service and product providers together with related consulting fields and research all of whom are facing new industry challenges whilst trying to deliver more for less. They are therefore keen to share and be exposed to new innovations and industry best practices to assist them with the development, delivery and management of services and infrastructure into the future. With its international profile this event will not only draw participants from around the world but in consequence attract an even larger domestic attendance. The Congress is to be staged at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the MCG (or the G as it is locally known) is more than just a sports venue. Located in Yarra Park, only about a 10-minute walk from the heart of the city, it is steeped in a rich history: established in 1853, less than 20 years after the founding of Melbourne and often described as the beating heart of this fantastic city. It has been the home of Australian football since 1859, and was the birthplace of Test cricket in 1877. It was the main stadium for the 1956 Olympic and 2006 Commonwealth Games. But it is so much more than Australia s biggest sporting stadium - it has hosted Papal and Royal visits, been a concert venue for international performers, and even housed US Marines, the US Army Air Forces and our own RAAF during World War II. This international event will provide exclusive access to many inspirational business thinkers and industry leaders across the parks and recreation sector. Become part of the occasion and utilise this unique opportunity to profile your business.
