Switzerland - North-South Bike Tour 2018 Individual Self-Guided 7 days/6 nights The North-South Route connects two of the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. It starts at the trip point in Basel and crosses the Jura Mountains to Lucerne. On it goes through central Switzerlandand up towards the Gotthard pass. Then, you roll past the castles of Bellinzona and further through the Magadino plain until you reach the Lago Maggiore.
Itinerary Day to Day Day 1: Arrival in Basel Day 2: Basel Aarau 55 km Basel, Liestal and the Ergolztal: a bustling, self-confident agglomeration. In contrast: tranquillity and charming countryside in the Baselbiet Jura. On through Aargau's Jurapark hills, followed by a racy descent down the southern Jura slopes to Aarau Day 3: Aarau Luzern 55 km From Aarau the way leads to the idyllic Suhrental river valley; with views of the Alps spotted south and Jura chain north. Through rich orchards and fertile fields alongside Lake Sempach, this stage finally takes you to Lucerne. Day 4: Luzern Altdorf / Flüelen 55 km Picturesquely along the bank of the Lake of Lucerne at Kastanienbaum; in Beckenried you cross the Lake of Lucerne by boat and cycle along the Achsenstrasse at the lake, towards the Urnerland. Day 5: Transfer Altdorf / Flüelen - Gotthardpass Gotthardpass - Biasca 45 km Per Transfer through the Reuss-plain and up to the Gotthardpass, an alpine transit route of European importance. If by horse, by train or by car, everyone always wanted and still want to cross the Gotthard southwards. The Leventina has been a passage corridor for ages. The further south you go, the milder the climate gets. Day 6: Biasca Locarno 50 km An easy ride along the waters of the Ticino, soon passing chestnut trees and vineyards. Bellinzona, called La Turita because of its many castles, lies on top of a strategic valley narrowing on the southern connection to the alp passes Gotthard, San Bernardino and Lukmanier and is probably the most Italian city of Switzerland. The "Skyline" of the Tessin capitol with its lombardic character forms the mighty fortress of three of the best preserved medieval castles in Switzerland and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Day 7: Departure or extension
Route Technical Characteristics: Route Profile: The North-South Route gives the cyclist an impressive overview of the topological and cultural diversity of Switzerland in a small area: After the start in the chemistry metropolis of Basel, crossing the Jura is the first challenge as a reward, the next stage through the Swiss middle land from Aarau to Lucerne is almost completely flat. After the spectacular landscape along the Lake of Lucerne into the heart of Switzerland you transfer from Altdorf up to the legendary Gotthard pass. Through the Tremola ravine down to Airolo, the cyclist uses the old, cobbled pass road. From Airolo, the Vegetation gets more and more southern until after a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Bellinzona you can enjoy an espresso in Locarno under palm trees.
