OCTOBER 2016 Voice ALASKA CRUISE & TOUR 2016 On August 11th, 26 VIP members and guests, along with VIP escorts, Mary Hage and Leann Dramstad, traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska to embark on an exciting 11 day land and cruise tour with our suburb TRIPS escorts, Benni Buss and Christoph Voelkel. The first night was spent at Pike s Waterfront Lodge where we had a beautiful view of the Alaskan scenery and bright sunlight at 11:00 PM! A Riverboat Discovery Cruise on an authentic Alaskan sternwheeler the following morning offered a sea plane demo on the Chena River, a stop along the sled dog training site of Susan Butcher (winner of 4 Iditarod Sled Dog races) and a visit to a Chena Indian Village. Day three took us deep into Denali National Park 92 miles to be exact - on a National Park bus with a great narrator. Along the route, we saw a brown bear with two cubs, moose, caribou, Dall sheep and a stunning view of Mt. Denali! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the four hour trip from Fairbanks to Talkeetna on the Alaskan Railroad the following morning; the domed car offered spectacular views through beautiful countryside. We traveled by motor coach on day five to Seward where we boarded the Norwegian Sun for our seven day cruise through the Inside Passage. Our first full day on board was spent at sea before reaching the gigantic Hubbard Glacier - a 300 foot wall of ice! The views were amazing as we saw episodes of calving when huge chunks of ice broke off the glacier. Our first port of call was Juneau, where guests could opt for a historic city tour or whale watching both of which included a stop at Mendenhall Glacier. Our next stop was at Icy Strait, a historic village that was once home to a salmon fishing cannery. At our stop in Skagway, the majority of the group enjoyed the 3 ½ hour journey on The Scenic Railway of the World, the White Pass Railway, on a narrow gauge track passing Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, Dead Horse Gulch and the original Klondike Trail of 1898 on our way to the White Pass Summit. The afternoon was spent at Liarsville Gold Rush Camp for a delicious salmon bake lunch, entertaining show and gold panning. Our final port was Ketchikan, where several of the group visited the Saxman Totem Village and other interesting sights in the city, while others took to the sky for a Misty Fjords flightseeing excursion. Our final day at sea was spent relaxing and enjoying the views of the 274 miles of stunning scenery along the waterway of the Inside Passage. It was truly a great adventure, where we made new friends and lasting memories. A picture is worth a thousand words...take a look at a few of our favorites. Pierre/Midland - Twin Cities Trip Pierre and Midland together had 20 VIPs and guests go on the VIP Twin Cities Trip on September 20-22nd. There was a little bit of everything for our travelers to take in theaters, baseball, casino or shopping. Leann from our Huron Branch did an awesome job putting this trip together. When everyone first arrived, we all introduced ourselves and told some interesting facts about ourselves. We played three games of VIPGO. The winners of the first and second game each received a gift card. The third game winner won a fall basket with a pumpkin scented candle and pumpkinchocolate bread. After the games, the VIP members enjoyed ice cream and visited about college, sports, and where we all came from. It was interesting to hear about their college experiences compared to ours! Twenty members of the Newell VIP Club gathered on September 22 nd at the Blue Line Diner here in town for our annual ICE CREAM SOCIAL. To start off the afternoon everyone signed up for the door prize of the day which was dinner for two at the Blue Line. Soon club members were busy ordering ice cream treats and a beverage. The hour flew by quickly as people spent the time mixing and visiting. The lucky winner of the dinner for two was June Kosola. Congratulations, June! Mark your calendars for Friday, October 28th. Centennial 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VIP CLUB! September 21 st was the 10 th Anniversary of the VIP Club. We celebrated with a MASHTINI LUNCH; mashed potatoes in martini glasses with all kinds of yummy toppings. It was a fun party! MARK YOUR CALENDAR...
