MAUI NONPROFIT GEARS UP FOR ITS ANNUAL FUNDRAISER TO BENEFIT WHALE RESEARCH BY KAREN BROST E ach fall, as many as 12,000 humpback whales make the 3,000-mile journey from their feeding grounds off the west coast of North America and head to Hawai i to mate, give birth and nurse their young. These magnificent mammals are not only massive weighing in at up to 40 tons each but they re pretty mysterious, as well. There s so much we don t know about these amazing animals, explains Meagan Jones, Ph.D., executive director of Whale Trust Maui, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting, conducting and sharing humpback whale research. We ve never seen them give birth. We ve never seen them mate. We don t even know why they need to migrate to Hawai i. Curious humpback whale off the coast of Maui, Hawaiʻi. Humpback whale resting underwater off Maui, Hawaiʻi. Photo Credit: Flip Nicklin/Minden Pictures - Photo obtained under NMFS Permit #753 She says that a big part of her organization s research involves trying to discover why whales sing. It s such a complex communication system, and we don t know what it means. It was once believed that the songs were part of the whales courting ritual, but Meagan says that recent research has found that it s only the males who sing and that they attract other males with their songs. That has changed the focus of our research. Naturally, scientific research requires funding, so each year, Whale Trust Maui hosts a four-day educational and fundraising event titled Whale Tales to support the mission of Whale Trust Maui and give the public an opportunity to interact with world-renowned experts on whale research. The 9th annual Whale Tales event will take place on February 13-16, 2015 and will highlight the role Issue 13 I 7

Humpback whale breaching off the coast of Maui, Hawaiʻi. Photo Credit: Flip Nicklin/Minden Pictures - Photo obtained under research permit #13846 that technology, such as satellite tracking, plays in advancing whale research. All profits generated by the event will go toward whale research in Hawai i. Since its inception, Whale Tales has raised over $360,000 for this cause. Whale Tales will kick off on Friday with a reception in Lahaina followed by a video presentation under the stars by National Geographic photographer Flip Nicklin and cinematographer Jason Sturgis. On Saturday and Sunday there will be free presentations at The Maui Theatre, and a new IMAX movie titled Humpback Whales 3D will also make its Hawai i debut that weekend. The footage I ve seen is absolutely spectacular, Meagan says. A lot of the film is about what s happening here in Maui. Guided whale watching excursions will also be offered throughout the four-day event. A lot of the local whale watch companies here donate their boats for the weekend, Meagan explains. We really like to get people out there so they can experience the whales. Each of the tours has one of the presenters on board, so people have a way to engage with one of the experts in a very personal kind of way. On Friday morning, there will be a special photo expedition led by National Geographic photographers, and Monday s VIP whale watch excursion will include pupus and cocktails and all of the Whale Tales presenters will be on hand to answer questions. The humpback population is continuing to grow, so there s a concern in the scientific community that these magnificent mammals will be taken off of the endangered species list despite the fact that there is still so much to be learned about them. According to Whale Trust Maui, further studies of humpback whale behaviors are needed so that effective conservation efforts can be put in place. Meagan says that so much of what was once believed to be true about humpback whales has changed over the years, and that s what keeps the research that her organization conducts so exciting and so important. TRAVELING PHOTO EXHIBIT MAKES ITS WAY TO MOLOKA I BY KAREN BROST Photo Credit: HTA Dana Edmunds Located on a remote peninsula on the northern coast of Moloka i, the settlement at Kalaupapa has a long and storied history as the site where patients with leprosy (now known as Hansen s Disease) were once banished. Between 1866 and 1949, an estimated 8,000 individuals were forcibly sent here, 90 percent of whom were Native Hawaiian or part Hawaiian. Isolation laws regarding leprosy in Hawai i were not abolished until 1969 antibiotics that could cure Hansen s Disease and allow patients to live a more normal life were introduced at Kalaupapa in 1946. A few residents still remain in Kalaupapa, but they now live here by choice. Ka Ohana O Kalaupapa is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the value and dignity of every individual who was taken from their family and sent to Kalaupapa. To honor and continue the legacy of these individuals, the organization has created a traveling photo exhibit titled A Reflection of Kalaupapa: Past, Present & Future. The exhibit has previously been presented on O ahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kaua i, Lana i and at Kalaupapa and will now be on display at the Moloka i Museum & Cultural Center in Kala e through August 29, 2015. The museum is located on the grounds of the 1878 R. W. Meyer Sugar Mill. The exhibit features nearly 100 photographs, most of them by acclaimed photographer Wayne Levin who began taking pictures of the people and landscape of Kalaupapa in 1984. The photos are accompanied by quotations from the residents and their family members to give viewers a deeper understanding of the people of Kalaupapa, many of whom went on to live remarkable lives Issue 13 I 11

NEW ADVENTURE TOURS SCENIC DAY TRIPS MAKE IT EASY FOR VISITORS TO SEE TOP ATTRACTIONS ON OTHER ISLANDS BY KAREN BROST Part of the fun of planning a Hawaiian vacation is deciding which island to visit, because each one has its own unique personality. But now, with the introduction of Mokulele Adventure Tours, vacationers don t have to limit their Hawaiian experience to just one island. These economical day trips make it possible to see some of Hawaii s other top attractions without having to book another hotel room. Plus, getting there is half the fun, thanks to the amazing scenic views and comfortable, first-class seating passengers enjoy on Mokulele flights. In December, Mokulele launched four new tours: Image courtesy of Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) / Dana Edmunds 14 I MOKULELEAIRLINES.COM

NONA LANI COTTAGES Cottages Visitors often come to Hawai i seeking their own piece of paradise, and for more than 40 years, many of them have found it at the Nona Lani Cottages in South Kihei. The Maui vacation rental business was started by David and Winona (Nona) Kong in 1971, and it continues to be a family business, with the Kong s 7 children, 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and great-greatgrandchild all involved. 20 I MOKULELEAIRLINES.COM

MAUI S KONG FAMILY HAS BEEN WELCOMING GUESTS INTO THEIR OHANA FOR MORE THAN 40 YEARS BY KAREN BROST Plumeria on the grounds Hale structure for events In 1955, the Kongs were living in Wailuku when David s father offered them two acres of land in Kihei. At first, David, who was an entrepreneur, couldn t understand why anyone would want to move to Kihei, since no one lived there. But once he saw that the property was right across the road from the beach, he was sold. My grandfather loved fishing, diving, throwing net, being on the water. He surfed. He was a true Hawaiian waterman, explains his granddaughter Kauilei Chang. One of her aunts told her that at the time, they could sit on the beach to watch the sunset and see all the way from Mā alaea to Makena without a building in sight. Issue 13 I 21

Davids catch, 1959 After building their own home on the property, the Kongs decided to add several plantation-style cottages to rent out so Nona could stay home with the children. David also saw it as an opportunity to run a successful family business welcoming visitors to the island he so cherished, and he named the cottages Nona Lani, which means Nona s Heaven on Earth, to honor his beloved wife. The land was originally heavily forested with kiawe trees, but once it was cleared with the help of the Kongs siblings, Nona used her passion for gardening to turn it into a tropical paradise. They opened their first four cottages in 1971 and added four more in 1973. The cottages have been updated over the years, but still retain their authentic Hawaiian charm. Thanks to Nona s gardening talents, guests enjoy fresh mangoes and avocados grown on the property. There s also a Pua Melia (plumeria) garden and the Kongs daughter Elena Jones sews fresh leis from the flowers, operating her lei business on an honor system where guests simply drop their payments into a box. We ve been using the honor system for the past 26 years, she explains. We trust that people are still pono (righteous). Other family members lend their own talents to the business, such as bookkeeping, housekeeping, yard maintenance, marketing and sales and planning onsite events and celebrations. There are no strangers at Nona Lani Cottages all guests are warmly welcomed into the Kong ohana, leading many guests to return year after year. In fact, the Kongs never needed to advertise. Word of mouth, or what the family fondly calls the coconut wireless, was all they needed. Kong family

Grandkids selling Leis, 1991 Kong Beach David passed away several years ago, but his spirit is still very much alive within his family. We still talk about him as though he is still here, Kauilei explains, adding that they often recall things he said to them. To him, family was the most important thing in life. Kauilei attributes the long-lasting success of the Nona Lani Cottages to the fact that her grandparents were such welcoming, aloha-spirited people. Guests know that they re welcome to come back at any time, she says. It s a place where you arrive as a guest and depart as ohana.
